It’s been a while since I’ve talked about my fic Visceral, but I just posted the last chapter of the year, which I enjoyed writing it very very much and I even somehow found time in this motherfucking hot mess of a month to do a moodboard!
It’s a slow burn Hiei x OC, with lots and lots of angst (the way I like it! 😈).
You can read it here. Or jump straight to the latest chapter!
Warnings: Mild language, emotional themes, implied alcohol use, mild romantic tension. Let me know if I missed anything!
The city buzzed with the electric hum of nightlife, neon signs flickering in and out of focus like fireflies. Somewhere between the crowded streets and the deep pulse of distant music, Yusuke Urameshi found himself dragged into a situation he never thought he’d be in—standing outside a club, fidgeting with the hem of his jacket, glaring at the entrance like it had offended him.
“You know,” he grumbled, turning to you, “I don’t do this kind of crap.”
You smirked, stepping closer, so the streetlights caught the glimmer of mischief in your eyes. “What, you don’t dance?”
He scoffed. “Hell no.”
“Well, that’s a damn shame,” you sighed dramatically, tilting your head. “Because I do.”
Yusuke’s eyes flickered to your face, then down to where your fingers played idly with the strap of your bag. There was something about the way you looked at him—like you were testing him, waiting to see if he’d back out. And that made his stubborn streak flare to life.
“Fine,” he relented. “But if some guy starts gettin’ handsy with you, I’m breakin’ his nose.”
You rolled your eyes. “Noted, tough guy. Now come on.”
The club was loud, the bass heavy enough to rattle through the floor. Yusuke tensed instinctively as the crowd swallowed the both of you whole, his hand brushing against your lower back for just a second before he caught himself. You didn’t seem to notice, or maybe you did and just didn’t care. Either way, the warmth of your body this close made something coil tight in his chest.
The music shifted to something slower, sultry, the beat that encouraged close movements. You turned to face him, eyes dancing with amusement. “Don’t just stand there.”
Yusuke clenched his jaw. “I feel like an idiot.”
“Then be an idiot with me,” you teased, grabbing his hand and pulling him forward. “I won’t laugh.”
The first few moments were awkward as hell. Yusuke moved like a fighter rather than a dancer—tense, alert, bracing for something. But you… you moved so effortlessly, guiding him without pressure, giving him space, but also making sure he felt you there. And little by little, he followed.
His mind was at war with itself. He had spent years keeping his guard up, always ready for a fight, always prepared for the next blow to land. Dancing? Survival and necessity were quite far from it. Defenses were down. It was intimate. It was stepping into a world where he wasn’t in control, and that scared him more than any opponent ever had.
But there you were, easing him into something unfamiliar without making him feel weak. He hated how much he liked it.
Your hands moved to his shoulders, his to your waist, and before either of you could react, you found yourselves pressed together. Yusuke swallowed hard, the scent of your perfume making his brain feel foggy. The way you swayed, so close, so unbothered by the press of his body, had him damn near dizzy.
He didn’t even realize he was staring until you looked up at him. That teasing smile from earlier softened into something else.
“What?” he muttered.
“You’re not half-bad at this.”
“Yeah, well, don’t go tellin’ people. I got a rep.”
You laughed, the sound warm against his neck. His grip on your waist tightened just a little, an unconscious response to the way your body felt against his. It should’ve been harmless—just a dance, fun. But then you had to say something that sent his whole damn world tilting.
“I love you.”
His breath hitched. He barely had time to process before you added, “Do whatever you want with that info.”
Yusuke blinked, pulling back just enough to look at you fully. You were serious—no teasing, no deflection, just raw honesty staring him right in the face.
For once in his life, he was speechless.
Love? That wasn’t something people like him got. Love, a luxury and a weakness, was something he couldn’t afford. His mother’s slow decline in a drunken haze was what Love watched. Love was the friends he almost lost time and time again, the pain that came with caring too much. Love wasn’t for him.
And yet.
His heart slammed against his ribs, his mouth opening to say something, anything—but you just smiled, leaning in close, your breath ghosting over his lips.
“Think on it,” you whispered, then let go, stepping back into the crowd.
Yusuke stood frozen, watching as you disappeared into the sea of bodies, his pulse thrumming in his ears. Then, like something snapped in him, he surged forward, weaving through the crowd with one thought and one thought only:
He wasn’t letting you get away that easily.
---
You weren’t always this bold. Once upon a time, you would have shied away from crowds, avoiding places like this at all costs. Growing up, you were the quiet kid, the one who watched from the sidelines rather than stepping into the fray. It took years—painful, hard-fought years—to break free from that shell, to become the person who could drag a reluctant Yusuke Urameshi into a club and challenge him to a dance.
Maybe that’s why you liked him so much. He reminded you of who you used to be—restless, skeptical, always on edge. And maybe, just maybe, you wanted him to see that change was possible. That he could let go, even just for a little while.
But you hadn’t expected to let your feelings slip like that.
You weren’t sure what would come of it, but one thing was certain:
Yusuke wouldn’t ignore it.

Epilogue
Hours later, the club had thinned out, and the city outside had settled into a quieter hum. You sat on a low wall outside, the cool night air brushing against your skin, lost in thought. Then, a shadow loomed beside you.
“You really mean what you said back there?” Yusuke’s voice was low, hesitant.
You looked up at him, offering a small smile. “Yeah. I did.”
He exhaled, rubbing the back of his neck. “I—” He hesitated, then sighed. “I don’t know how to do this. But I don’t want you to walk away thinking I don’t care.”
Your heart clenched at his honesty. “I don’t need you to have all the answers, Yusuke. Just… be here.”
For a moment, he just looked at you. Then, with an almost imperceptible nod, he sat beside you, his shoulder brushing against yours. No grand declarations, no perfect words—just presence.
I forgot yesterday was wednesday. Anyway, here's some writing I was working on. It's a YYH fic where Yusuke is turned into a kitten. I'm writing it mostly for me and mostly for fun.
Kurama’s phone rang some time around 5PM and he looked down at Kuwabara’s name and felt a minor flash of apprehension. “Hello?”
“Uh, hey Kurama,” Kuwabara’s voice across the line was high and nervous. Below that, there was the faint sound of—
“Did you get a new cat?”
“Well, um. That’s kinda why I called?” He paused and the yowling got louder. “No, stop it! I’ll tell ‘im, jeeze!”
That minor flash of apprehension bloomed. “Tell me what, Kuwabara?”
“I think Urameshi got turned into a kitten.”
“What?”
“Yeah, man. Honestly, you’d better just come to my place and see for yourself.”
***
Kurama stared at the tiny, black-furred kitten currently trying to gnaw off Kuwabara's thumb and tried very hard to keep the amusement off his face. "It's definitely Yusuke," he agreed, cocking his head. The energy signature was unmistakable, if greatly reduced from what it usually was though still entirely too much for a kitten.
Said kitten paused its furious gnawing to meow unceasingly up at Kurama in a clearly-incensed manner that was just as unmistakably familiar as the energy signature. He could almost hear words behind the mews.
"Yes," he leaned closer, "I'm sure it was very undignified. Kuwabara certainly deserves it."
"Hey!"
“What happened, exactly?”
Kuwabara shrugged, dislodging Yusuke from his finger by grabbing him by the scruff and holding him up. Yusuke hissed, swiping his claws ineffectively. “One minute we’re playing games, the next bam! There’s a tiny kitten crawling outta Urameshi’s shirt.”
Kurama tilted his head, leaning slightly closer to Yusuke, though making sure to stay out of clawing range. “It’s highly unlikely the video game caused this,” he mused. Yusuke meowed plaintively at him and he sighed, holding out his hand. Kuwabara dropped Yusuke into it reluctantly.
“Watch out, man. He bites,” he warned, but Yusuke merely turned to hiss at him before carefully crawling his way up Kurama’s arm to his shoulder, perching there like it was his right. “And yeah, I mean, he mentioned somethin’ ‘bout some low-level idiot trying to start somethin’ at the ramen stand, but I figured it was nothin’,” he added, peering closely at his chewed-up thumb.
“And now he’s an incredibly strong kitten with the energy of an S-Class demon,” Kurama sighed. He carefully plucked Yusuke from his shoulder and held him up in front of his face again. “Hold still,” he ordered, pleased when Yusuke immediately sat down on his hand. He focused his energy and looked—
“Ah, there we are.” He made an indelicate face. “It looks like a small curse; nothing major.” Yusuke yowled his disagreement with this. “You should be back to normal in a couple of days.”
“A couple’a days?!” Kuwabara yelled at the same time Yusuke yowled even louder. “What do we do with ‘im? I mean, I could look after him, I guess, if he’ll get along with Eikichi; I mean, I do have a setup for cats—”
Yusuke hissed and scrambled back up Kurama’s arm to his shoulder, claws dug into his shirt.
This long fic is completed now so I can post about it again with complete tags. Sharing chapter by chapter was actually difficult.

Summary:
"You must know you're on a very thin line here, right? You're playing with fire."
"Oh, trust me, Yusuke. I know how to handle fire amongst other things."
"Bullshit. You think you know everything because you're so old but you almost died from being wrong once and you can be again."
"Are you threatening me? A young little thing like you, making threats against me?"
"Um, hey," Kazuma called for their attention as he got back on his feet and dusted off his ass, not that there was much dust in Shuichi's apartment anyway. Everything looked so prim and proper and new. "What's going on? At least explain it to me? I could help."
(Kuwabara Kazuma died young and left his loved ones broken and burdened with irreparable guilt. Kurama disappeared and neither Yusuke nor Hiei knew where he had been until he was found again lurking around a human soul, in search of love. Kurama planned to get what he wanted even if that meant manipulating the very people he loved and finding loopholes in the rules that united the three worlds.)

Why Kurama is a Hidden Metaphor for Kuwameshi's Soul Bond, and how his Name, Character Design & Togashi's Color choices tell us this! 🤣🦄🌈
If you've read Kuwameshi: Audacious Soul Bond meta, you'd have seen that Togashi draws A LOT from real-world Japanese Culture to layer Deep Symbolism into the heart of YYH to clue us into his Hidden Story!
The proof points in the full meta are just the tip of the iceberg, but to recap that iceberg into an ice cube for the purposes of this post 🤣, Togashi clued us into the Soul Bond Love between Yusuke and Kuwabara with their Names itself, coz the marriage of Yusuke’s and Kuwa’s Names means Souls (幽) in True Harmony (和真) who Help (助) each other!
Not to mention, Kuwabara's Name literally means Mulberry Origin 桑原, and Togashi repeatedly references the real-world symbiotic relationship between Mulberry & Silkworms that's steeped in Japanese Divinity to tell us Silkworm Yusuke is likewise growing off his Divine Mulberry Kuwabara's Reiki, showing us Kuwa's indispensable to Yusuke's Evolution into Mazoku, just like real-world Mulberry Silkworm farming played an indispensable role in Japan's history, culture & modernization!
But did you know that even Kurama as a character symbolizes the True Harmony Soul Bond of Yusuke & Kuwa, and Kurama’s Name actually tells us this? 🤣
Coz guess what Kurama’s Name 蔵馬 means? Read literally it just means Hidden Horse 🤣, but given how vital Symbolism is in Togashi's Storytelling DNA, Kurama's name actually means Hidden Metaphor!!!
Coz what else does Kurama as a Character symbolize, other than the literal fusion of Yoko Kurama’s Yokai Soul with Minamino Shuichi’s Human Soul, growing together as One indivisible whole?
Togashi even took great pains to clarify that Yoko Kurama did NOT possess Shuichi or kill Shuichi's Soul to take over his body, instead, Yoko Kurama became nearly One with Shuichi!
Which mirrors how Yusuke’s Yokai (Mazoku) Soul is becoming ONE Indivisible Whole with Kuwa’s Human Soul since the time they're just kids brawling each other, and from then on our lovebirds grow stronger together throughout canon in tandem with each other!!!
Kurama is literally a metaphor for the hidden Kuwameshi Soul Bond! 😂🤯
This is why Kurama is the go-between for Yusuke and Kuwa whenever our Kuwameshi lovebirds are Retreating from Love with each other, coz Kurama Symbolizes how our lovebirds still want to be One with each other, but think they can't for various reasons!
This is why just telling us that Yusuke got Kurama to cut his hair after Sensui arc is enough to tell us that Yusuke and Kuwa have once again Retreated from Love with each other post Sensui arc for reasons I covered in Togashi's Storytelling DNA meta!
Whenever our lovebirds turn to Kurama for things you'd expect them to turn to each other for, it's a sure sign our lovebirds are Retreating from Love with each other, out of Love!
Not to mention, in real-world Japanese culture, foxes are considered messengers of Inari, the Japanese Shinto deity for rice, and Yusuke & Kuwa are linked to rice in a hilarious manga blurb that tells us Puu is their lovechild 🤣🐣, and rice in Japanese culture is again linked to Divinity!
Thus it's so apt for Kurama to be a fox demon-human, coz he's the messenger & go-between for Kuwa & Yusuke to stay in contact with each other even during their Retreats from Love! 🤣🦊💌
This is also why Togashi colored Kurama in Blue in a YYH artbook drawing (first image in this post), coz Blue is the color of Kuwameshi's Shared Reiki of Love!
Do you see how many times Togashi uses Symbolism in Names, Character Designs and Colors to repeatedly show us Yusuke and Kuwa have a Divine Soul Bond Love? 🌞💛🌿💙🐛❤️🌞

“Hiei knows he is not a casual person. Between his temperament and his packed schedule, casual sex has never been a consideration. Running is the priority, keeping his grades up directly tied to it.
But when Kurama walks into his life and offers Hiei a taste of just how fun friends with benefits can be? For Kurama, Hiei could give just about anything a try.”
I’ve finally started posting my sexshop/college kurahi au! This fic is my pride and joy. 🥰
It’s got a little of everything: comedy, miscommunications, pining, gratuitous amount of smut.
If that’s your thing, consider read “you’re crawling under my skin” below!

Okay so I've been mulling over different stories I'd like to explore with horror and I think I finally landed on something.
So, in Yu Yu Hakusho we meet Kurama when he's desperately trying to save his human mother's life. He's willing to go to great lengths to accomplish this, which pisses Yusuke off and he points out that Kuramas mom would have spent her life mourning his death if things played out without Yusuke to help.
My concept is...what if Kurama wasn't supposed to save his mom? We know with Yusuke there's a sense of "you're not supposed to be dead yet," in Spirit World which leads to the series starting. Everyone has their time to go.
So maybe things start happening with Shiori and Kurama begins to wonder if his choice was the right one?
I believe a big flaw of Kurama's is his willingness to lie and manipulate the people he cares about to get what he wants. He's portrayed as the perfect boyfriend in a lot of ways, but his behavior really comes off as serial killer vibes to me in the context of him being willing to circumvent the natural order of human life.
He's also lived way way way more life as a demon than a human. His demon side lends itself to bad decision-making when it comes to humanity, and I want to explore that.
