I bought an acrylic display box for the Ichiban Kuji sofvic figures but uh Hiei is taller than 10 cm so this box doesn't fit the team 😅.
I tried putting the G. E. M. palm sized figures inside instead but cried because there's an empty space where Kuwabara should be. 😭

Summary: There could be a number of reasons why Kurama did not recognize them. Kuwabara went for the easiest explanation that did not betray his trust in the fox. It was just like the psychic to remain faithful to Kurama no matter how the fox antagonized them. But Hiei recognized the difference in Kurama's youki. It was the same spiritual signature but the intensity of it was different. And Kurama in his current incarnation had long passed this level of power from his past self.
(Or Team Urameshi find themselves stuck in the past where they confront a familiar stranger wearing the face of their beloved fox)
Notes: This whole fic is going by manga lore by the way so it ignores how the anime tried to separate Kurama and Youko Kurama. They're the same character especially with Kurama being able to freely shapeshift after CB arc. Youko is not a name, it's the kind of youkai Kurama is. Shuichi is also just an alias, not Kurama's human consciousness, like how Batman and Bruce Wayne are the same person but different names. Or how a werewolf is a werewolf no matter the appearance. That said, different versions of Kurama based on his timeline have different priorities in life and will react to things differently.

4 Stages of shipping Kurakuwayuuhi/Team Polymeshi/Yu Yu Polycule and why it's Kuwabara's fault:
Stage 1: I read some omegaverse Yusuke/Kuwabara fics where they're hot. Or rated t or gen fics where no one was shipped with Kuwabara but he dies and there's team angst. I played around with more angst concepts of Yusuke loving Kuwabara and outliving him.
Stage 2: I was talking to a twitter mutual who ships Kurama/Kuwabara. He made me realize they have a teacher-student dynamic. HE TRAINED THAT BOY HARD. The angst of Kurama being so very afraid of losing one of his teammates after Kuwabara was kidnapped is very dear to me. I read some fics about them. I saw some pixiv art because I looked for it to share with my mutual.
Stage 3: I entertained the angst of Hiei/Kuwabara where Kuwabara dies and Hiei misses him unexpectedly. I saw some more art, saw some gay fighting with sex. Read some fics, some angst some comedy. I like the kind of size difference where the smaller guy is stronger and manhandles the bigger guy into sex. Angst gets better if you add Kuwabara/Yukina and twins drama.
Stage 4: I joked about Kuwabara ironically attracting all the demons around him depsite his name being a chant that should drive away spirits. Insert art of lamb getting bitten by wolves here because it's funny, it's sexy, it's life. I started reading ot4 fics with angst or with smut. I started writing my own ot4 fics (one of them 42k words because I got carried away, okay?).
Now, writing a new polyam fic with plot, sex and angst.
PS: before shipping Kuwabara with these characters, I was only into Kurayuuhi because Yusuke is my favorite glue. Turns out Kuwabara is the even stickier glue.
I'm thinking of Keiko/Yusuke/Kurama where the gang boards a train and Yusuke is perving on Keiko and trying to grope her. Kurama notices and gropes Yusuke to punish him about his perversion with karma. Keiko joins in for revenge. So Yusuke ends up coming in his pants because of Keiko touching his front and Kurama grinding on his back.
