As if being soulbound wasn’t enough, Grian just announced for the start of session two that there was a “special surprise” and told everyone to meet at spawn.
And what are the lifers greeted with? A lineup of children, the youngest looking to be about 5, and the oldest maybe 8. The issue is, they all look similar, eerily so. And the worst part is Cleo’s just spotted one that looks a lot like her, and a whole lot like Martyn.
A young girl, looking to be around 6, with fiery orange hair to match Cleo, and Martyn’s baby blue eyes. Stitches covered her little body, but the rotted flesh was only in patches, human skin covering the rest of her. And those tiny little phantom wings poking out of her back, looking the exact same as who was clearly her father.
Cleo looks away from the children, and sees Martyn looking at her with a questioning gaze. They shake her head in response. This changes NOTHING, they still aren’t soulmates no matter how hard he might try.
It’s funny though, two sessions later Cleo finds herself combing the young girls hair with her sat on their lap, Martyn across from them telling her a story he heard when he was a kid. Petal giggled, clapping her hands. “Again, again!” She cheers, and Cleo wonders how she could’ve been so against this idea before.
They do like to joke they don't know where her personality came from, though. Because it certainly wasn't either of them! They'd probably explode if they tried being this positive and kind.
Can we get Martyn giving Tilly head scratches,,, I always think about how he named Tilly
Day 396: head scratches for her!!
Do you have the clip of Martyn saying “I like the phantoms, they feel familiar, they feel like home” anywhere? I’m trying to find it for a mini video I’m making but Martyn doesn’t have his 2024 Vault Hunters vods on his vod channel and I can’t find it here on tumblr.
You’re usually the person with all the clips so figured I’d ask :)
Of course I do :3c
You’d think with such similar love languages, Cleo and Martyn would understand each other attempting affection better.
But instead, when Cleo offers for Martyn to stay with him, and gifts him diamonds to protect himself, Martyn thinks it’s purely out of pity for him. And when Martyn goes to the nether and the deep dark to provide for his soulmate, Cleo thinks he’s just being an idiot.
It’s only curled up in Cleo’s bed, Martyn playing with Cleo’s hair as they discuss last season, do the two realise that maybe the other was trying to help. Maybe it was gift giving and acts of service all along, maybe their actions were fuelled with just as much love as it was spite, but neither will admit they’re wrong.
Cleo will always stand by he was in the wrong for going to the nether, and Martyn will always stand by they were in the wrong for dumping him before they could even get together, even if everyone else around them knows they’re just idiots.
Even Scott can admit he maybe overreacted in Double Life, though only in the confined company of Cleo and Cleo alone, but Martyn and Cleo are stubborn as ever.
What surprises both of them is how little it affects their relationship. Their friends see it as a ticking bomb - and for most others it would be. But they don't begrudge the other their actions. They know it was done out of goodness, even if they won't admit that part aloud. And, most importantly, they both know the other knows that too.
Perhaps that is its own sign of love, a mutual forgiveness between two very stubborn people.
Cleo hated the beach with a passion, her rotted flesh always seemed to feel bloated when it was in water for more than a few minutes, and sand would always get in between their stitches, but then after Pearl and Scotts big fight, Scott decided to move to a beach house on a small island and now it looked like Cleo would be spending a lot more time surrounded by sand and water.
The first few months she kept blowing off visits, making excuse after excuse to not go see him. They loved Scott, that was clear in her every interaction with him, but she didn’t want anything to do with the beach. It was only after Martyn’s insistent begging, guilt tripping, threats, and silent treatment, that Cleo finally gave in and agreed to go see Scott.
The trip to the beach was fine, until Martyn led them to a small boat. Cleo immediately took a step back, brown boots sinking deeper into the sand as she glared at the boat. “I am not going on that.” They said firmly, crossing their arms.
“Yes you are.” Martyn snapped back and grabbed her by the arm, attempting to drag her forwards. But to his dismay they were too heavy, and all he’d done was tug on her sleeve. “Cleo you promised.” He said sternly, crossing his arms in a matching movement. “Scotts not doing well, and as his friends it’s our duty to check up on him.
Martyn’s tone made Cleo crack a smile, sighing exasperatedly. “When did you become so responsible?” They asked with dismay rolling their eyes as she allowed Martyn to pull her onto the boat. She sat with a huff as Martyn started the engine and the two slowly chugged across the water.
The water kept splashing onto them, and while Martyn just laughed with each splash, Cleo groaned, putting her head in her hands. When they were within view of Scotts island she caught sight of him sat on the beach, and the way his face lit up when he spotted the two of them she knew Martyn was right, not that she’d ever tell him that.
Once the boat hit the sand Scott flung himself onto it, tackling Cleo in a hug. She let out a scream as the two of them toppled over the edge of the boat and into the sand, but Scott couldn’t hear it over Martyn’s cackling. They just groaned as Scott finished the hug and pulled her to a standing position, before brushing off as much sand as possible.
“Don’t get too handsy with my soulmate,” Martyn laughed as he came to stand next to Cleo. “We might be here to visit you but don’t think I won’t kick your ass.” Scott rolled his eyes and the three held hands, Scott excitedly leading the two of them into his home and pointing out everything they passed.
Cleo had to admit that maybe this trip wouldn’t be so bad, there was plenty to do around here and Martyn and Scott could always keep her company. Maybe the sand was bearable for her best friend, maybe she’d even put up with a short swim if it meant seeing Scott smile… and Martyn shirtless.
Cleo gets to sit with Scott, pressed against his side, and gossip about Martyn like he's a hot guy in a magazine. Which he should be, FYI, he hides a very nice body under that baggy t-shirt or big coat. And no, it's not just Cleo and Scott being biased. If anything, they're even better judges!
That alone would make the trip worth it, but the way Scott and Martyn pamper her once they retreat to safety (Scott's house) makes it even better. A full massage to ease the bloating and sore skin, careful care to dislodge all the stuck grains of sand... They know how to make a zombie feel like they're walking on clouds.
Cleo guesses they can do this again. If her boys are going to treat her so nicely.
King Cleo had no interest in finding love, she was here to rule and that was it. So when her successor, Ren, told them she had to get married in order to keep their status, like he’d done with Doc, it was safe to say she was unimpressed.
Her first thought was Scott, a platonic marriage between the two of them would make her life easy, and he was a good partner to have, but he’d already gone and tied the knot with Emperor Jimmy. So who the fuck was she supposed to turn to? Pearl was off frolicking through sunflower fields and wanted nothing to do with her, and Etho and Bdubs had already gotten engaged to each other. She was out of options!
That was until Ren suggested Martyn.
“He’s a good hand!” Ren had argued, trying to convince them to marry Martyn. She hated to admit it but he was right, he’d worked well beside Ren in Third Life. But did she really want to marry her ex-soulmate and rule by his side?!
… maybe, now that she thought about it. They’d worked well together later in Double Life and he had proven to work well with a king. They’d give him a chance, but if he fucked it up like he did Double Life… well, she was king now. Off with his head!
Martyn's loyal. Loyal in the ways that matter to her. He's smart, thinks quickly. Funny, too. They like funny. And it'll keep him close to Ren, which she's sure those two will want.
They don't need to be in love with each other. As long as their working relationship is good, she'll be happy.
(It turns out their relationship gets closer when Martyn isn't making terrible decisions.)
