Javelin was bored. There was nothing to do until she heard the rumor of a ghost haunting a warehouse on the other side of Azur Base. Of course, she was going to investigate!

The afternoon sun hung low over the Azur Lane base, pouring soft golden light through the recreation room’s wide windows. Dust motes floated lazily in the air, shimmering each time the light caught them. The room they were in was quiet, save for the distant hum of a vending machine somewhere down the hall and the occasional rustle of papers that Z23 who also went by Nimi was perusing. It was just like the Iron Blood shipgirl to focus on maintenance reports after hours than doing something fun.  Javelin’s legs bounced against the table’s edge, her lavender hair swaying as she leaned over trying to focus on the tablet in front of her. She was trying to read the manga that Svirepy had loaned her before she rotated out back to Northern Parliament territory.

Javelin could not sit still.

“I’m boooorrreeed,” the young woman finally wailed. She shoved the tablet away from her having given up trying to even read it.

Laffey, who had been snoozing on the couch behind her startled and blinked lazily. Nimi looked up from her paperwork over her glasses to glare at the Royal Navy shipgirl.  

“Then go find something to do. Don’t you have college work to turn in?” Nimi asked irritated.  

All Javelin did was respond with a huff and folded arms. “There’s nothing to do with the upcoming WNO summit. They’ve gotten everything all ‘serious’.” Javelin said the last word with air quotes. She knew that the World Naval Organization meeting was a big deal. She could see it on Commander Marcus Poe’s face as he worked late into the night with Enterprise. Even Takao, his secretary shipgirl, was stressed out.

“Why don’t you go find that ghost?”

Javelin spun around looking back towards the other side of the room. Sandwiched between to bookcases and legs pulled into a comfy sofa chair sat Köln. She was an Iron Blood light cruiser with silver hair and violet eyes to go with them. Her German accent was light, probably since she was permanently stationed with the Iron Blood contingent representing the Red Axis.

“Wait, wait—did you just say a ghost?” she asked, eyes wide with sudden interest. Köln nodded with a hint of amusement in her usually neutral face. “A ghost haunting the base? Oh, that’s amazing! Where?”

“I heard on the other side of the island in the warehouse district, “Köln said closing the book and setting it in her lap. “It’s getting closer to evening, and I hear that’s when Geist like to come out.”

Immediately, Javelin’s imagination filled in the rest. There had to be creaking doors, flickering lights, maybe even a floating specter or two. Her pulse quickened with excitement.

Across the table, Laffey stirred in her seat, blinking drowsily. She had fallen half-asleep hugging a pillow that she’d somehow dragged in from her quarters. Her snow-white hair was tousled, her expression as vacant as ever.

“Ghosts are… sleepy,” she mumbled, rubbing her eyes. “Maybe they just want to nap too.”

Javelin leaned forward until her face nearly touched Laffey’s. “Come on, Laffey! Don’t you want to see it? What if it’s real?”

Laffey gave her a long, slow stare, then looked away toward the vending machine outside the room in the hallway of the main complex. Javelin followed her gaze and sighed.

“And I’ll buy you an Oxy-cola.”

“Yay,” Laffey responded but the enthusiasm was dampened by the yawn in the middle.
