I wanted to do a little something for mermay with a little monster design! She’s lightly inspired by my OC Ekānta and a very old mermaid piece I did in 2019! All around was a fun idea to revisit!

Summary:
Itsumi Erika is sick. Like, sick-sick and she is left alone in her dorm room. That's kinda her fault since she never really made friends. That's why it caught her by surprise when someone knocked on her door.
There wasn’t much Itsumi Erika could do but lay on the floor, limbs spread apart, and stare at the slowly turning fan above her. Somewhere in her fever ridden brain, she was glad that the shivering stopped but on the other hand, that was probably not good.
How many days had it been? Had it even been a day? It was extremely hard for the young woman to tell how much time had passed in her melty brain. The cough was the hardest. It wracked every part of her when a fit overcame here. Why was she lying on the floor? Oh, she was going to try and get something to eat. That wasn’t happening right now.
It wasn’t a surprise she was in this situation. Erika had enough strength to text her Commander that she was feeling ill and since she really didn’t have any friends, no one stopped by. That was fine. Friends were overrated. At least that what she told herself every time she hauled her aching body from one part of her room to another.
Yes, she was probably too competitive but she did try to temper that after she got her ass handed to her in the 63rd National High School Senshado Tournament. Still her intensity hadn’t won her many people wanting to deal with her outside of Senshado training.
And that is why I am laying on the floor wasting away, Erika thought to herself with a sardonic chuckle.
As the woman began to debate if she had enough energy to drag herself to get something to eat or back to bed, she heard a knocking on her dorm room door. It was firm and evenly spaced which was soothing in a way to her screaming mind. Erika went to tell whoever it was to come in but she could barely get any words out and even then the door was locked.
The knock came again and Erika said. Could they just let her die in peace? There was a fumbling at the door and then the familiar click of it unlocking. Someone had gotten in! Every instinct immediately went into overdrive but it was useless. She was too sick to move.
“Erika. You here?” came the voice through ears that felt like they had cotton in them. That voice was familiar but her fevered mind didn’t let her identify it. Who would have come to her room like this? Were they going to steal her stuff?
“Erika.” the voice said again and Erika could feel the person’s steps through the floor before they reached the end of the short hallway and in to the room proper. God, she must have been a wild sight to see laying there in only her pajamas she knew that she had put on backwards and inside out. Such a humiliating way to die.
Immediately, the foot steps took three long strides before the figure knelt down beside her, slid an arm under her back and helped proper her up in their arms. It was at that moment, that Erika realized her eyes were shut and that’s why she hadn’t been able to see who it was. As she forced them open, her glassy pair met a very brown set of eyes in the smooth and round face of the last person she would have wanted to see her like this. They belonged to her own Senshado commander.
“Erika.”

I am so utterly fascinated by “Saki”, the 18-year-running mahjong manga in which you, the reader, become gradually, frog-boilingly aware (over the course of nearly two decades’ worth of mahjong tournaments) that none of these girls are wearing underwear and most of their boobs are slowly expanding.
I need you to understand that I have, like, an anthropological level fascination with this comic. From the perspective of someone who is also a comic artist and writer, two things delight me about it:
the fact that I understand completely how an artist gets from “the fans can have a little hint of skirted asscheek” to “the pussy is completely out on center page” over the course of 18 years; and
the way in which the pussy being out is treated by the characters and diegesis as being utterly unremarkable.
Okay. Point 1. The frog-boiling.
Let me put this in perspective for you. There was already a meme about how the characters in “Saki” don’t wear underwear when I was in middle school. I am thirty now. Okay? And it’s still going.
In the time since, this has stopped being a joke. It is now indisputable canon. This is not because anyone outright says it at any point. It’s because the underwear ran out of places to hide. I’m obsessed with this thought: somewhere in the over 20 volumes of “Saki”, there is a panel in which underwear was objectively deconfirmed. And it would be so hard to figure out where that panel actually is. Maybe the artist didn’t even realize it when she drew it! The frog? Boiling!!
And of course there is also the breast expansion. I don’t know how to put a spin on this. They are just expanding. Like, this happens a lot with artists: you define a character as being, in your mind, “the one with the big boobs”, and over the years you emphasize that trait further and further so that the signal doesn’t get lost in the noise. It’s just that normally—in like a wildly popular manga series about mahjong published by literally Square Enix, for example—normally there would be a point at which the boobs stopped getting bigger. Like, an editor would step in or something. Or you would get to the point where you cannot draw the character in the same panel as her mahjong tiles without her breasts spilling over the tiles, and you’d go, “Well, this is now untenable.”
That did not happen. There is no ceiling. The frog is soup.
Point 2. The complete and utter mundanity of all of this.
It’s like this, okay: there’s no shortage of trashy ecchi manga out there. There’s a million other comics doing wildly bawdier things with wildly more improbable bishoujos.
The vibe with “Saki” is different.
It’s hard to explain this, but it feels like the world of the comic is fundamentally uninterested in the fanservice happening on the page. I cannot describe it as “leering”, because I cannot conceive of a person in the story from whose point of view one would leer. I think the artist is probably into it—I can’t imagine anyone is making her do this—but “Saki” the comic has no opinion on the matter.
There are essentially no male characters in “Saki”. Like, there was one guy? Kind of? At the very beginning? But he is gone now. They put him back in the toybox. He does not exist. It appears to be some level of canonical that in the world of “Saki”, almost all humans are women. Those women are sometimes romantically into each other. According to comments the artist has made on Twitter (which I cannot source), they have lesbian baby technology, so it’s no problem. It’s so much not a problem that the story is about mahjong, instead of any of that.
So, like, the fiction here appears to be this: this is the, like, meta-narrative of the fanservice of “Saki”, right: it’s just normal that they don’t wear underwear and their boobs are arbitrarily big. It’s been normal. It was normal before the story of the manga began. It’s just how things are. Nobody bats an eye about it, and if they do, it’s in sort of a lesbian kind of way so like what’s the problem, we love lesbians here. This is literally normal for girls.
The fanservice simply diffuses into this all-encompassing aura of disembodied, ambient sluttiness. The framing of the panels demands you acknowledge it, and the story demands you already be over it, because it’s mahjong time now, and we’re playing mahjong.
Do you get??? why I’m so fascinated??? Are you not a little enraptured???
Anyway, I have no idea how to end this weird post. I guess the conclusion is that women stay winning????
I have so many questions... How does one SUSPECT a manga character isn't wearing underwear? Like, sure, boobs are front and center amd you can see them get bigger panel by panel but how does this work for panties? Are there just that many upskirt shots?
Also how do you keep a manga about Mahjong going for 18 years, what??

Machaut’s Mass 😇 It’s been a while I wanted to talk about this album! I was lucky enough to sing it with ensemble Organum several times in recent years and have cherished the experience.
However, for some reason my memory failed me and I’ve always believed it came out in 1994 (my birth year). As I discovered during the editing process, it actually came out in 1996 and my intro is kinda ruined. Anyway, I hope you forgive me for giving you the opportunity to discover this saxophone-plainchant combination. It’s surprisingly not bad at all, just verrry dated 😅
Many ensembles have recorded Machaut’s mass. I didn’t have time to include another recording I enjoy, by Musica Nova. Much slower, and wonderfully rich. Have fun!

It must fucking suck to be a small child in the age of ai. Imagine you're 10 and you're happily drawing anime characters or making a cringy ass oc and then people are like "what's the point of drawing? Just generate it with ai!" You either have two options.
Option one: they agree and have singlehandedly fucked up their imagination and have no creativity Because they no longer have to think
Option two: they get discouraged as all hell because they're like ten. They don't understand that you can avoid ai, if somebody older says ai is super important and you can't avoid it they're just gonna take it as fact.
How absolutlely awful must it be to be a small child with aspirations and then have the adults around you say hey kid? Stop that! Good news, ai can do that for you! You don't have to have any dreams anymore!!!

I was thinking while re-watching the Azur Lane anime. Belfast must have been something fierce when she fought. Not just because Prinz Eugen warned Zuikaku about who she was.
Azur Lane HQ was literally under assault by the Red Axis, their outer fleet cornered by the 3rd and 4th carrier group under Shoukaku and Zuikaku and Queen Elizabeth's move was just to send Belfast. ONLY Belfast.
Lizzie thought only Belfast was needed says something about her. That maid's legendary status isn't hyperbole.
I like to imagine that, thousands of years ago, humans still stood a (reasonably) safe distance from the ocean during weather like this to watch the waves, hooting and cheering when the spray came closer than expected and left them drenched

Javelin was shocked when she got summoned to see Hood but what she found out, the fact she would be serving with Iron Blood for a few days made things even more shocking. Can the young Royal Navy shipgirl survive three days with the Iron Blood?
It took everything in her power to stay ahead of her attacks. Javelin jinked left and right; back and forward as the mirror as many Aichi D3A carrier bombers lobbed their 60kg bombs on her. From her back, Javelin could feel her anti-aircraft guns of her rigging try to lock on the enemy aircraft but it was almost impossible because of the speed she was dancing away from the attacks.
Javelin was scared.
Yes, she knew that she would have to fight Sirens and the young girl had been in combat before but this was completely different. Back in the second schism war, she had her friends by her side. Right now she was completely alone. Terror trilled through her heart as one 250kg bomb landed in the water and erupted in a spray of water and fire. The kansen destroyer found herself thrown off her footing and rolling across the water like a skipping stone. She was able to pull herself up and throw her body to the left as another bomb detonated. This one, she felt. The compression wave struck her and her internal shielding hardened to protect her insides but the blast knocked the air out of her longs and brought tears to her eyes. She had completely lost track of where she was as the next wave of planes began to scream down towards her.
Jinx has been captured by the Teen Titans but not all is lost. They actually have a problem of their own and she might be able to use it to get out of the jam.

Gizmo had a point. The Titans appeared to have gotten used to her presence in the tower and only Robin kept his eye on her...for the most part. She did get the feeling that if she had scooted on out, they wouldn’t have done much to stop her. The whole certification thing was over and they were just waiting for the weird alien girl to return. Jinx knew she could have just left but that made her want to stay.
“Look. This is a perfect opportunity to get a good idea on how they operate. They are getting lax enough I might be able to get on the sealed floors.”
“Sure.” Mammoth said from somewhere off to the side of the communicator screen Jinx had jerry rigged.
“You don’t believe me?” Jinx demanded though they could hear the humor in her voice.
“Let’s just say,” Mammoth continued leaning in. “You are going through a lot of trouble to get in to that mystic’s pants.”
Jinx glowered at him but it was undercut by the red in her cheeks.
“You know me, when I see something I want, I go for it and no one is getting in my way.”
“Yeah, yeah. Try not to get yourself shredded into spaghetti or something. Rumor says she’s extremely powerful.”
“All the more fun.”
Gizmo made a gagging noise and then hung up. Jinx leaned back with a grin on her face and stared across at the empty wall of the spare room. Yes, she could get out and make a run for it and that’s all she wanted to do but now. Right now, she had a plan.
