Greater Good
For @ninjago4life’s Zane week! This is a fun idea and I’m glad I got to participate a little bit!
There were all sorts of advantages to being a nindroid.
For one, Zane never needed to worry about his clothes. His extensive database could instantly pull up a fitting outfit for any occasion, and his state-of-the-art masking technology meant that he could don that outfit with only a moment’s notice.
He also had infinite energy. His self-powering core meant that he never had to worry about running out of power and not being there for his friends when they needed him most. He’d stayed up entire nights with someone before, just to be perfectly alert the next morning for whatever the day might bring.
Oh, and of course, how could he forget one of the most fun benefits to being a nindroid: it made him absurdly good at video games.
Their days off, even after all this time, usually had several hours devoted to playing games together. Today saw them gathered in the living room of their new headquarters, a round of Mario Party booted up on screen.
That was nearly forty minutes ago. Now Zane sat in solid lead with two stars and nearly enough money for a third, pummeling the others in each minigame they played.
The round ended. The minigame selection menu popped up and selected “Don’t Wake Wiggler!”
“Not this one!” Jay wailed, throwing his controller onto the couch. “It’s so RNG!”
“Which means Zane’s gonna win again,” Lloyd mumbled.
Zane smiled. “Thank you.”
“Yeah, whatever,” said Kai.
Something about his tone was off. Zane glanced at him, and the rest of the room, from the corner of his eye as the Wiggler screen loaded.
Jay had his head thrown back, looking despondently at the ceiling. Lloyd had started scrolling through his phone. Only Kai really seemed engaged, and he was glaring at the TV with the sort of look he usually reserved for his enemies.
They- they weren’t having fun, were they.
Zane looked back at the screen. The Wiggler intro had started, and the arrow jumped over their character’s heads in a blur before it stopped on him.
So he had the first move, which was also the best position to be in for this game.
“Fan-freaking-tasting,” moaned Jay. “It’s over. I’m never gonna be able to afford a star!”
“Hey, maybe they’ll give you “the most loser” bonus star,” Lloyd suggested.
Jay glared at him. “Ha ha. Hilarious.”
Zane leaned forward. The female voice counted him into his turn.
He pet the Wiggler once. Twice. Four times. Five.
He went for a sixth in the last second he had, and the Wiggler erupted screaming in his face.
Kai sat bolt upright. “Dude! You woke him up the first turn? I didn’t even think that was possible!
Jay flipped over so fast Zane swore he heard his neck crack. “Wait, that means he doesn’t get any coins!”
“We’re back in this!” Lloyd cheered.
Zane hid his smile into his controller. Maybe he’d thrown and wouldn’t get another star now. But it was worth it.
