the main thing a prisoner gets used to is routine. wake up early in the morning, clean, eat, work, eat, sleep, and the cycle continues. of course there are days where the routine changes such as holidays, inspection days, visitations... but the more drastic changes is having a new cellmate. after being in this hellhole for more than 3 years, minsung has seen people come and go. the departing is easy to get accustomed to for there is no attachment, ever. the arrivals on the other hand are more complex to situate with. some come with this god complex that takes time to diminish. some come with fear and it’s almost impossible to calm them. others are simply angry at the world and those are the worst for minsung. with the announcement of a new cellmate, minsung exhaled in defeat. just a few months ago someone came in and boy was he a handful. minsung prayed this one will be different.
praying is useless, minsung learned after the new arrival. no sungha is the name and to minsung’s misfortune, the other was hard to deal with. as a changed man, he learned to keep his cool. if this kid arrived earlier, he would not hesitate to fill the kid’s mouth with blood. sarcastic, lazy, ill-tempered- he sympathized too much to the kid, but it didn’t mean he would be lenient towards the other. minsung is kneeling on the floor, folding his thin blue blanket as he watches the other still resting. “kid, wake up.” he speaks sternly. “this isn’t a vacation spot. you should know that already.” he stands up and picks up his mattress to the corner of the room and folds it in place.
minsung is always up early on sundays. sundays have always been cleaning days for him because cell checks tend to be scheduled on these days. when a cell is clean, the better chances of the inmates in having merits on their record. merits wouldn’t affect his record much, but it never hurt to gain them either. but the fact that his mate wasn’t cooperating, it irked him to the bone. after being alone for a few months, he’s adapted well to keeping a clean record of himself, but just looking at the kid’s punchable face really tests his patience. “clean the floors and dust off the place. i’ll clean the bathroom and the dishes.” minsung likes to keep things simple and fair, and splitting the chores is the only logical thing to do. so he orders only when needed and is lax when something it’s as important.
