Parasocial relationships are wild honestly

For those interested parasocial relationships (simplified and put into relevant terms fro this topic) are when a fan is under the illusion they know a content creator for who they really are. It’s where you feel like you know a celebrity even tho you’ve never met. They can be Bad and are often exploited by content creators or it can lead to fans wildly overstepping boundaries
However for me learning about them gave me a lot more freedom to be able to enjoy peoples work. I don’t know the hermits and i probably never will and any assumptions i make about them are likely to be wrong. This means that when they inevtiably fuck up i don’t feel personally betrayed by them because i never knew them anyway. The person they present online (even in streams) is a performance, in the same way that anything we post online is some sort of performace. That doesn’t make it untrue, but it just means that they are different person on camera than off camera.
Understanding parasocial relationships a bit more is why i feel comfortable talking about hermitcraft and dicussing characters and character traits, because even when i talk about hermits out of universe i know im not discussing the essence of someones soul or whatever, im talking about the person they play online
It’s also helped me not care so much about behind the scenes stuff when i know that learning anymore about it dones’t make me know them any better.
It can seem negative but for me learning about them sorta freed me up to enjoy things without worrying so much about everything
it’s a pretty complicated topic and it gets into some interesting questions about self and personhood and knowledge (some of which i will admit i have slightly more unconventional takes on) but if you like this sorta thing i really reccoment the video (it’s also pretty politcal ngl its very left leaning)
