Have you ever seen turgite? This goethite-hematite stone is a real rainbow wonder, and of course it's behind the inspiration for this design; its natural growth habit it's often either in botryoidal (like a bunch of grapes!) or stalactite forms, which we played with in Turgite's shapes.

Commissioned by ZappySapphy after one of the pieces of her in real life collection!

Traditional commission for ZappySapphy, a fusion of her Metallic Diamond and Neon Diamond! This is a kind of design we don't often work with, so it was fun trying to figure out how to make a character that had elements from both ;)

Gem design for ZappySapphy, based upon the real life cinnabar specimen in her collection! The last of a batch of four gem designs she commissioned us ;)

Real cinnabar is toxic, and made up of sulphur and mercury, which are toxic substances themselves, hence this character being a fusion with some pretty menacing traits. Real cinnabar was used both as make-up by Ancient Romans and to make lacquered vases during the Song Dynasty, which inspired respectively the red markings on their face and the motifs on their body. Overall, designing Cinnabar was a blast!

A gem design made for ZappySapphy! Since real life malachite is a toxic mineral often used as a pigment in the past, the inspirations behind her designs are mainly women Renaissance painters (her collar and apron are partially inspired by the one wore by Sofonisba Anguissola in a portrait of the time) and a chemist/poison maker, with the little vials at her belt 😏
