Tame the Lion
It was all over social media within minutes, being reuploaded faster than Red Bull’s legal team could take it down.
Max had been frustrated for weeks: bad strategies, slow pit stops and a car that just couldn't perform the way he needed it to. The only surprise was that he hadn’t snapped sooner.
And then, post race when Max had finished P16, the Sky TV cameras had caught Max lunging at one of the engineers - biting him.
It took six people to haul Max back, thrashing like a thing that shouldn’t be handled. His eyes wild, teeth gnashing - animal-like and terrifying.
The rest of the pit lane had stilled, the commentators not seeming to know what to do or say; someone in a media centre somewhere deciding whether to cut away from possibly the most valuable footage they’d filmed all season or keep it locked on Max who was straining against GP’s arms and growling. A caged thing, trying to remember what skin felt like.
An hour later, Daniel’s phone rang.
Christian.
He couldn’t say he hadn’t expected it because this, this was bad. No, worse than bad. Optics destroying.
Everyone knew Max was… Different. Different to all the other hybrid drivers. He was one of a kind, the sort of model that Mercedes or Ferrari could only dream of: augmented reflexes, neuro-linked telemetry, engineered recovery rates. But he was also hungrier and angrier than any other Red Bull creation. Any creation on the grid.
He was engineered to be competitive - perilously so. He’d rather destroy himself than lose. More, always more and more.
But out of control? It was only a matter of time, Daniel had known that when he was still driving at Red Bull.
Mexico, 2018. Turn one, Max had forced him wide. They’d made contact. Max’s sidepod tore like wet paper and he was out before he’d even completed the first lap. The fury in the aftermath. Max had slammed Daniel into the wall of their shared driver’s room, rattling Daniel’s spine like glass in a windowpane. Max’s face had looked wrong then. Not contorted in anger but… empty. Yet so full. Like every wire inside him had been crossed and set alight and his circuits couldn’t handle it.
Daniel hadn’t fought back. He couldn’t; Max’s strength was something else entirely.
He was built to survive what humans couldn’t.
To take hits.
To win.
He answered the phone. “What the fuck have you done to him?” Daniel asked.
There was a pause before Christian said, “we just need you back, mate.”
“You know I can’t.”
“Daniel, I am begging you and you know I don’t just do that.”
Daniel knew that. “Christian-”
“You’re the only one he’ll listen to. Always have been.”
He knew that, too. “He’s your problem now.” He didn’t mean that.
“Please, Daniel. For his sake.”
Daniel knew it wasn’t for Max’s sake or his safety.
It was about Red Bull’s bottom line. The sponsors. The stock tickers. The beast was malfunctioning and we can’t have that when there’s money to be made. But Daniel also knew that Christian wouldn’t have called unless they’d already tried everything else.
So he packed a bag and booked the next flight to Milton Keynes.

Chapter 18
Mirror Daniel is right; this is a second coming, like Arthur returning from Avalon. Like a phoenix from the ashes. Daniel would return stronger, better. He would fight and be victorious.
Daniel stares dumbstruck at Max's handsome face, slack with the onset of sleep. Older than when they first met, more masculine, more mature. This wasn't the lanky boy who had tried to kiss him in Monaco when they were both a little tipsy.
This was a man.
A world champion.
A rival.

Chapter 2

The office is all frosted glass and muted furniture and when Max enters, there doesn't seem to be anyone around. He knew it. A scam or a prank. Maybe he'd be jumped and wake up in a bath of ice missing a kidney. He smirks at his own joke before wondering how much a kidney sells for on the black market.

Daniel frowns. He looks away from the TV now, at Max. The light reflects in his gorgeous eyes. "Like a house-house?" Daniel asks.
Max laughs and it feels like some sort of tension has broken. He leans forwards and kisses Daniel on the nose.
"Yes, a house-house. It is ours if we want it. And the money, it is not just pocket change. The probate company will take a commission of course, but… We don't have to worry any more."
"What do you mean?" Daniel looks confused, weary. His fingers curl tighter around Ducky.
"I mean… Maybe everything really is going to be okay."
Daniel doesn't look convinced. "Money doesn't fix everything, y'know. It… It can't fix me."
"I know." Max concedes. "But it will help. It will take the pressure off, give us some time to breathe."
I know I'm super behind on this but we're just gonna go into Kinkvember with it until I'm done!
Daniel's fingers still tasted like chlorine from the pool the day previous. He could still smell it on his skin, at the nape of his neck.
Max hadn't said anything about the locker room.
Maybe he hadn't seen Daniel.
Maybe Daniel had imagined it. Or maybe he hadn't. But he could exactly ask Max: "hey, did you see me peeping at you in the showers yesterday?"
So Daniel didn't say anything either.
They spent the whole day as normal. Breakfast and then a walk around the grounds - one of the staff at the lodge had given them deer feed and they'd spent at least an hour wandering about tentatively feeding the deer. Daniel tensed and squirmed as their wet noses and tongues and blunt little teeth tickled his hand. Max held his palm out flat and confident, laughing as the fawns came bouncing out of the mist to see them.
Back at the lodge, after a thorough hand wash, it was time for a light lunch of salad, cheese, bread and cold cuts. Daniel scrolled through the photos he'd taken of Max with the deer but Max said he couldn't post any of them on Instagram yet in case people found out where they were.
Daniel wrinkled his nose. Why was Max always so sensible and right?
By mid afternoon, Daniel felt his energy levels dropping. He plopped down on the sofa in the games room beside Max who was sprawled out on his phone with the TV in the background.
They didn't really say anything, which was fine because Daniel's eyelids were drooping. There was rain against the windows again, one of the staff must have lit the fire which crackled calmingly. The blue light of the TV reflected off of their faces.
Daniel felt sleepy, boneless, cosy. He let his thumb slowly find his mouth and sucked, the saltiness of the chlorine weird but not unpleasant.
It was warm in front of the fire and the voices on the TV were soothing as he suck-suck-sucked, eyes getting harder and harder to keep open. He felt fuzzy, like he did the other day. Small somehow. It felt nice, like floating.
Max was saying something but Daniel couldn't hear it.
Suck, suck, suck.
He woke to the low hum of a TV show he didn't remember choosing and a familiar ache in his neck when he slept weird. He didn't remember lying down. His cheek now pillowed on Max's thigh, the steadiness of Max's breathing felt safe.
But Daniel's mouth felt empty. Wrong. His thumb must have slipped out of his sleep-slack jaw, his breath fogging his knuckle
He made an unconscious sound, a small whine then felt his face flush. Maybe Max hadn't noticed. Maybe Daniel hadn't been sucking his thumb even though he knew he had. He always did to get himself to sleep. Of all the habits to keep... He shifted slightly, making to get up and maybe apologise or even joke about it -
But Max's hand brushed his jaw gently. Daniel shivered in response. Max's hand was warm, firm. And then, his fingers rested lightly against Daniel's lips - testing.
Daniels brain lagged a few seconds behind.
He could feel the pads of Max's fingertips tracing the curve of his mouth ever so lightly, scarcely there.
Unthinking, Daniel parted his lips and let Max slide two fingers past them.
Daniel's thoughts scattered like birds. But his first instinct wasn't to pull away or question it, or even speak. It was to close his mouth around Max's fingers, tongue curling automatically. A muscle memory he shouldn't have. Heat flooded his face. God, what was he doing? He should stop. He should - He couldn’t seem to make his body listen.
But it felt good. Comforting. He didn't question why Max's fingers fit so perfectly between his lips. The drag and taste of Max's skin against Daniel's teeth and tongue was intoxicating. Soothing somehow.
Max’s other hand settled at the hinge of his jaw, steadying him, guiding him into a slow rhythm. Daniel continued to suck-suck drowsily; a soft, wet pull that made shame roll through his stomach like thunder. He felt exposed, needy, pathetic. And yet… Yet he didn’t let go, heat flickering somewhere low in his belly, too.
Max’s fingers pressed against his tongue and Daniel’s whole body went tight with a want he didn’t dare name. He kept his gaze down, cheeks burning, unable to look up and see whatever was in Max’s eyes.
A hand stroked his hair, thumb smoothing along his temple. Daniel sighed, now obedient to the rhythm Max was setting for him. The shame he might have felt was enveloped by the simple relief of having his mouth filled again.
He could feel Max watching him, curious but in control. Daniel liked that somehow. He would have followed any touch in that moment - gone wherever Max might lead.
Suck-suck-suck.
Max hummed gently. "That's it, there you go."
He hummed back, sleepy and content. The words were reassuring but made Daniel's skin bloom hot under Max's touch. Suckling slower this time, aware he was rock hard in his pants but Max ignored it. Daniel wasn't sure if he was relieved or frustrated at that. Max just kept stroking his hair cradling his jaw. Daniel let himself be held, taking whatever Max would give him.
He didn’t know whether he was falling apart or falling asleep again, but he knew one thing with certain clarity: some part of him never wanted Max to take his hand away.
Here's the first part of the Daniel mpreg fic I teased like a year ago, oops

He knew they'd been trying for a while. Knew Max wanted a family. The one thing Daniel can't give him, but would give everything - anything - else in a heartbeat. With his last draw of breath. But it couldn't be a baby.
Then Josh messaged: hey, how are you? Are you free while you're in town? Wanna come over?
Josh had just got engaged last month. Daniel had liked the Instagram post even though a part of him shrivelled and he felt sick. A reminder that he was increasingly alone. It seemed every guy he fell for - thought he fell for - suddenly became engaged or had a baby not too long after things started to get a little serious.
Right now, Daniel just… Needed to be needed. Even if it was only for a few hours.
So he replied: sure 👍
He hated himself for being so predictable.
