...Well, ultimately? It wasn't that big a deal, Violet told himself. He tapped the button, erasing the messages.

It wasn't that big a deal, he told himself, when the messages kept coming. Some days, there were several. Some days, none.

Really not a big deal at all, he chided himself when he woke up at five am curled into a ball, cheeks wet, phone blinking.

Violet exited the kitchen and went through the mental list in his head. The dishes were cleaned and put away, the bed was made, the living room was, well, made neater. He had tried to organize the papers as much as he could, but gave up in the end. There were too many papers that he had very little experience with, and he didn’t want to ruin Carmine’s filing order. He resolved to talk to him about sorting them to a neater pile later.

It seemed like he had done everything, but something still felt missing. While he wondered what it was, he heard the front door unlocking--Carmine was home!! He smiled and walked over to the door, eager to greet his boyfriend. His smile dissolved to a worried look when he saw how dim Carmine’s flames were, shoulders slumped and eyes surrounded by dark rings. He walked closer, a hand outstretched until he cupped his cheek. Carmine blinked and looked at him, then walked forward and leaned his head on Violet’s shoulder.

“‘M home,” Carmine mumbled, voice quiet and tired.

“Welcome home, handsome,” Violet hummed and wrapped an arm around him. Carmine hugged him back loosely and he smiled and closed his eyes. This was nice. His boyfriend was exhausted but still had enough affection for him, and that was always the best.

A Jade Stone Necklace

WITH 45 MINS REMAINING TO THE DAY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY AZURE!!!!

Violet hesitated outside of Azure’s office. He knew he didn’t have a lot of time, since lunchtime was nearly over, but he felt anxious and nervous. He looked down at the small box in his hands and took a deep breath then knocked on the door. Azure’s voice told him to enter, and once he did so, he gently closed the door behind him then approached the desk.

“Hiyya~!” He smiled widely at Azure and did his best to hide his nervousness. “Whatcha doin’~?”

“‘Avin lunch,” The doctor replied, mouth full with the energy bar he was devouring. “Need something?”

“Mmmhmm~ I need a minute of your time!” Violet replied, voice very chipper. Any other time, he would have chastised the doctor about his bad eating habits. Right now, however, there was a thing or two more important to attend to.

“A’right, but hurry it up. I gotta get back ta work.” Azure said after he swallowed. The now empty wrapper now sat by a stack of papers, and it seemed as though Azure had no inclination to throw it away. Violet did it for him, though, unwilling to start talking until the it went into the trash can.

“Okay…” Violet stared at the wrappers in the trash for a moment. There were too many in there. When was the last time Azure at actual food? He turned back to the doctor and smiled nervously. “W-well, I found out today was your birthday, so...here.” He held out the box. “Happy birthday, Azure.”

Azure arched his eyebrows and stared at the box before reaching over to take it. He opened it and couldn’t help his eyes widening in surprise. “What’s this?”

“It’s...a...pendant necklace…” Violet answered. A dark green jade pendant, specifically, with the stone shaped into a horizontal oval. Nothing too fancy, but Violet had long learned that the doctor didn’t accept anything fancy or lavish. So a simple gift was best. At least...he hoped so. “Do you...like it?”

“It’s...fer me?” Azure blinked at the necklace in confusion, as if not understanding what he saw.

“Y-yeah! A present. For you. For your birthday.” Violet grew more and more nervous with the reactions. Did...did he not like it?

“It’s...for me,” Azure repeated, “for my birthday.”

“A birthday gift.”

“A...birthday gift…”

Silence fell between them while Azure stared at the necklace. He put the box down at the desk in front of him then gently picked up the necklace and inspected the stone. “It’s really nice. Really nice.”

“A-Azure?!” Violet gasped when the doctor started to cry. “I--Is everything okay?!”

“Huh?” Azure looked up at Violet and saw the world tinted pink. He held the necklace with one hand and wiped his tears away with the back of the other. “‘M fine mate. This--this is--a really good gift. I...It’s great. Thank you.”

Violet didn’t believe him, not when he sniffled and wiped his eyes again. He dimmed and looked down, then hesitantly apologized. “I’m sorry...Was I...not supposed to get you anything?”

“I dunno, mate,” Azure chuckled through his tears, “No one’s ever got me a gift before.”

“Wha...r-really?!” Violet looked up in wide-eyed surprise, “Oh, Azure…”

He got up from the chair and went around the desk, then pulled Azure into a hug. The doctor wasn’t satisfied with it, however, and pulled Violet down to his lap before hugging him tightly. The action made Violet chuckle, and he wrapped his arms around Azure’s neck and kissed his wet cheek.

“Happy birthday, darling~” He hummed and leaned his forehead against Azure’s then closed his eyes. “I love you~”

“L-love ya too,” Azure smiled shyly. It was still really difficult to say, no matter how many times he had said it in the past. He closed his eyes and cherished the touch between them. “It’s a great gift. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome~ I’m also taking you out to dinner after work! You need a proper meal in you.”

“But I--ah fine. I’ll wait in the front office.” He could be away from his books and research for one night. This...with Violet, it was worth it. “Give me fifteen minutes after closing to clean up, though.”

“Okay~” Violet hummed contently and made no effort to move. Azure didn’t tell him to do so, either, so he enjoyed their contact while it lasted. Once he knew that break time was over, he pulled away from Azure and smiled softly at him. He opened his mouth to speak, but Azure pulled him into another embrace and held him firmly in place. “Azure?!”

“Just...a bit longer.” Orange colored Azure’s face, and the doctor kept his eyes shut tight.

“But…”

“They can wait a minute or two more. It ain’t gonna kill ‘em.”

Violet hummed and leaned back into Azure, a content smile on his face. Even if it was for just one minute more, it meant the world to him. It showed him just how much his boyfriend loved him, and he was only too happy to love him with all of his soul in return.
