The siege of Veere (6-18 May 1572) was another important event during the early years of the Eighty Years’ War. This tapestry was made between 1599 and 1603, by the same ‘team’ as the tapestry in the previous post. After the capture of Brielle (1 April 1572) Dutch ‘rebels’ soon managed to take the town of Flushing, leading to most of Zeeland joining the side of the rebels. The Spanish governor of the Netherlands, Fernando Álvarez de Toledo y Pimentel (1507-1582), 3rd Duke of Alba, sends a fleet with troops to the island of Walcheren. The Spanish manage to march on Middelburg but their attack on Veere is repelled when the Dutch launch fireships against the anchored Spanish ships. After only three days the Spanish forces give up their siege of Veere. After the tapestry “Battle of Bergen op Zoom (previous post) the States of Zeeland decided to order five more tapestries to commemorate the naval battles that took place between 1572 and 1576 as part of the Eighty Years’ War. These battles helped secure Zeeland for the Dutch. Seen here are details from the tapestry depicting the battle of Rammekens (11-14 June 1572): the Spanish had sent a fleet to supply Middelburg but were thwarted by the Zeelanders near ‘Fort Rammekens’, the fortress defending the harbour of Middelburg. During the Eighty Years’ War (1568-1648) the Dutch revolted against the Crown of Spain. Early in the war the Dutch laid siege to Middelburg, still loyal to the Crown, which led to a series of naval battles between them and the Spanish. The battle of Bergen op Zoom (29 January 1574) was commemorated with this tapestry, which was ordered by the States of Zeeland. The tapestry was made 1593 and 1595, its design is attributed to Hendrik Vroom and it was woven by the workshop of the famous François Spierincx. The tapestry was hung in the Abbey of Middelburg, wich the States of Zeeland had taken over in 1574; the defeat of the Spanish at the battle of Bergen op Zoom had led to the surrender of Middelburg to the Dutch in February 1574.
