DNA traces prove wolf was in Dutch province Flevoland 

August 8, 2018 - Early last month, two sheep were bitten in township Zeewolde. DNA research showed a wolf is responsible. This is the first evidence that a wolf has been in Flevoland.

How the wolf ended up in Zeewolde is unclear. The wolf must have either swam across one of the surrounding bordering lakes, or crossed a bridge, wolf expert Hugh Jansman from the Univeristy of Wageningen says. “Wolves are strong enough to swim across large lakes, and can cross bridges at night when it’s quiet.”

This spring, 6 different wolves visited the Netherlands. A specific DNA technique called microsatellite analysis shows the sex and origin of individual wolves. This method requires a better quality of DNA samples, so it wasn’t possible to conduct this research on all cases. Also, a profile of the concerning animal - or its parents or direct relatives - needs to be already known in order to determine their origin. 

This researh shows that this spring, 3 male and 3 female wolves have been in the Netherlands. Two of the males were brothers. The map below depicts the locations of the determined individuals. Each individual has its own colour. Circles are females, triangles are males. 

I’m so excited about this news, Flevoland is the province where my hometown is. I’m secretly hoping they somehow make their way to the Oostvaardersplassen, which is a nature preserve in Flevoland with a greatly imbalanced ecosystem (the ungulates (Konik horses, red deer, and heck cattle) are extremely overpopulated and where are no natural predators).

September 2017: Monnickendam en Zeewolde

Onze tweede trip met de camper had een specifiek doel, namelijk het bijwonen van het NKC camperfestival in Zeewolde. Het zou een kort rondje Noord-Holland en Flevoland worden.
