Cluttered Mind
So I accepted this challenge by The Great Discontent called #The100DayProject. This project was firstly initiated by the most awesome Michael Bierut for his Yale students. I was greatly inspired by some of the results, like this one called 100 days with Josef Muller-Brockman by Jessica Svendsen. When I first saw this, I thought to myself: this is brilliant! This is exactly what we need as designers—this challenge is a perfect model of a chance to unwind, a brief moment to contemplate, and an excellent practice of discipline.
In early April, I stopped posting photos on my Instagram account and started uploading a series of graphic posters called The Weight of Things. I make these posters in attempt to reflect and be fully aware of every single thing I do, make, think, and decide; especially now that I’m thrown to the outside world after graduating from design school. Also, I miss messing around with types, forms, and illustrations; it’s been a while since the last time I freely put my ideas and heart out on a piece of blank canvas—or artboard, in this case.
I have to admit that I kinda cheated on first days because I’ve made a couple of posters beforehand. But as days goes by, I began to enjoy it. I invested an hour or two, just before I went to sleep, to really think of a concept and try to visualize it in the most unique visual I could possibly make. However, the work at my current workplace is excruciatingly draining—physically, mentally, and creatively. Maybe I’m exaggerating, but it almost feels like I have no energy left to actually be fully committed in doing something right after the daily jobs are done.
Or maybe I’m just simply lazy.
Anyway, this post isn’t meant to justify my delay or anything. I intentionally write this post as a reminder to continue experimenting and to simply keep going. At least that’s what I get from listening countless Sean Wes’ podcasts: by consistently showing up, you’re inspiring. To inspire itself isn’t necessarily the objective. It’s the discipline—and the doggedness—one has to do in order to achieve one’s ultimate goal.
