Early divergence of Zelda art styles
Zelda fans who have been around a long time are quite aware of the backlash-fueled divide of art styles between Zelda games starting with Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. This seemed to change with Skyward Sword, from which (most) mainline games featured a fusion of Twilight Princess's character proportions and Wind Waker's textures and coloration. Did you know though that even back as far as A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening, there emerged two different trends of illustrating the series, with either a cartoon/anime-esque aesthetic or a more dark and detailed aesthetic?
Outsourced art for the official game manuals and promotions (specific artist(s) unclear, please inform me if you know):
Illustrations by Katsuya Terada for the Link to the Past and Link's Awakening official Nintendo Player's Guides:
While the original official art and illustrations for the first four Zelda games are oozing with that charm resting somewhere between classic Disney and Miyazaki, I absolutely LOVE Katsuya Terada's old school, gritty dark fantasy/sword-and-sorcery approach. It really makes me think of the art trend progression we would later see from Ocarina of Time to Majora's Mask to Twilight Princess.
