Also, I watched Rhinocéros (Ionesco) tonight at Zellerbach performed by Théâtre de la ville. Great play; the director added in a prologue that, according to the program, is from Ionesco's only novel Le Solitaire, which provided a nice sort of foreshadowing to the play's plot. And there was an awesome set design. As for the characters, well... some of them were different from what I imagined. So Bérenger was exactly the same, whereas I never quite thought of Jean as being so, um, touchy-feely or... harsh. I mean, his character, yeah, but I always got the impression that it was hidden under a really polite mask of gentility. And of course, that self-referencing quote from the first scene... "Connaissez-vous le théâtre d'avant-garde, dont on parle tant? Avez-vous vu les pièces de Ionesco?" Yeah yeah, je les connais, on les connaît bien, right? Hah. I really enjoyed Bérenger's monologue at the end though; you could feel the emotion... "Je suis le dernier homme, je le resterai jusqu'au bout! Je ne capitule pas!" Bon courage, monsieur.
