A Tarot Tale: Not for the Faint of Heart
He booked a slot at half past three
Arrived in time, didn't recognize me
But I remembered my school bully
And prepared for him a special tea
He sat across me, poised and prime
As I planned a sentence for his crime
The table set, the velvet square
Intentions concealed, deck bare
I thought, perhaps I’ll twist the thread
Add a little smoke, a quiet dread
Invent some kind of harmless doom
Let his fear perfume the room
I shuffled the tarot, drew the first card
The Nine of Swords — Present hit hard:
Sleepless nights, restless mind
Tangled thoughts, tightly twined
The Devil crossed — Obstacle clear
Something no one ever likes to hear:
Chains unseen that keep one bound
Patterns self-made that spin around
I realized fate didn't let me lie at all
The reading already looked like downfall
Giggle and smile willingly subdued
With amusement contained, I continued
Six of Cups reversed — the Rooted Past:
Childhood echoes that still hold fast
Innocence twisted, cruelty turned sport
Misdeeds that haunt memory's fort
King of Wands reversed — the Shadow:
Arrogance high, empathy quite shallow
Over-passionate, under-compassionate
Delusionally dominant, a false magnate
The Tower — Near Future showed
My joy grew, his heartbeat slowed
“This is actually good,” I gently said
“Destruction clears the path ahead”
“Could be collapse, could be disgrace”
At this, all color drained from his face
I offered water, he drank, then reposed
“We’re almost done,” I said, composed
Ace of Pentacles — External Force:
A solid chance, a grounded course
Maybe to redeem, rebuild, amend
A door opens if the path can bend
Judgement — Outcome, final call
Reckoning rings through every hall
Only truth and courage find release
Run: and watch the weights increase
He staggered out, trembling, terrified
The spread itself seemed petrified
It struck me then, a caution to impart
In future: “Not for the faint of heart.”
