A Little Zorran Headcanon
This little detail has been part of my AU for ages, but I've never actually said it out loud, except possibly in private conversations with one or two people.
Zorran and the other Z-Stacks were based on the Moran fleet of tugs in New York. So, their leader was given a name that rhymed with Moran. This means that the correct way to pronounce 'Zorran' is "ZorRAN"
The trouble is, every single character in the show pronounces it as "ZorRUN." Everyone: Star Tug, Z-Stack, his own captain! Everyone pronounces it "ZorRUN"... except for one...
Zorran himself.
Zorran says his own name on at least two separate occasions: First, in the very first episode, Sunshine:
"No problem, that contract's as good as ours or my name's not Zorran!"
The second is in Bigg Freeze:
"Wrong, Sunshine - it's for Vienna. Delivered by me - Zorran - see?"
On both occasions, he specifically pronounces his name as ZorRAN. Which makes me think: Zorran spends his days listening to everyone around him pronounce his name wrong!
I mean, immediately after he says his name properly in the first episode, Zip follows up and mispronounces it!
Anyone who has ever had their name mispronounced repeatedly knows how annoying it is.
So, that is part of my AU's canon: Everybody pronounces Zorran's name wrong, which is why he's constantly irritated by... everything!
The only one who pronounces it correctly, besides Zorran himself, from the main cast is Zip. Being Zorran's nephew in my AU, it's a bit too much to have him say it wrong. It's the other change to go with the Canadian accent!
You know, ever since I've started writing Zeds to Stars, I've kinda been curious about writing the reverse. What if the Stars ended up with the Zeds? The timeline would remain the same, Zip and Ten Cents would still be growing because of their ASG, and the Olympic would still come into port, along with Goliah still showing up. Instead of the story being a recovery or redemption sort of quality from the Zeds, it'd be a fall from grace story on the Star's half as they find their morals and dignity constantly being pushed.
What do you think? Would you read something like that?

I have always enjoyed thinking about how relationships between the tugs would pan out had the series progressed. In particular, considering their limited interaction but similar moral direction, Zebedee and Zip's future relationship is a favourite to think on.
Out of the two switchers, I think Zip is more likely to get along with Zebedee and Zak, particularly as I see Zip looking up to Zorran rather than sucking up to him like Zug does. The events of High Winds would probably impress Zip enough that he would start looking up to Zebedee. I see Zebedee recognising that Zip is being used by Zug and constantly put down by Zorran and would take advantage of Zip's admiration to give the boy a more positive and encouraging role model. I think their friendship would quickly become genuine as there would be no malicious endgame on Zebedee's part.
Zorran, in my AU, is Zip's Maternal Uncle and struggling with a nasty divorce, which has made him bitter and harsher than usual. This made it easier for Zip's admiration to switch.
Zebedee's POV:
You've been busy at work and gotten some decent headway, and you're parched. You sit down for a break and brew yourself a nice, fresh pot of tea. You've just poured yourself a cup when-
Your instinct is to help your fleet mates, but you know that if you do, you're not going to get your tea until it's ice cold....
I have a question what is zips eating habits?
Zip has what my family call "Hollow Leg Syndrome."
My design of Zip is tall and very thin, like much of his mother/Zorran's family. This has nothing to do with him not being fed enough and everything to do with his supercharged metabolism.
As the eldest - once only - son of an adoring Ziva, Zip gets very hearty, home-cooked dinners in the evening and leaves with a good breakfast in his belly and a packed lunch. And he cleans his plate/lunchbox every time.
But Zip burns energy quickly, so he snacks a lot. He's regularly seen munching on something between jobs.
His skinny frame, combined with his frequent rumbling stomach and hungry expression, have gained him the sympathy of a few people in the port. The most notable are Zebedee, who sometimes cooks an extra portion of whatever he has made for lunch to give Zip, and shockingly, Izzy Gomez. The sleepy tramper, having overheard Zip's constant stomach rumbling while in the port, has been seen slipping the switcher a couple of bananas or whatever fruits he has for cargo on a few occasions.
However, Zip does not discriminate very much when it comes to food. The only things he's been known to turn his nose up to are cauliflower and liver. With this in mind, Zip doesn't care about what he snacks on or what is in his meal. He will munch on an apple or banana with as much pleasure as a chocolate bar or packet of crisps. Aside from the two foods mentioned earlier, he will always finish his meal and his plate will be left, as Zorran once commented, "cleaner than it was when it came out of the cupboard!"
Although there is a concern about what will happen when Zip's metabolism inevitably slows down, Zip has always said that he only eats when he's hungry.
