Zero point five

I am the son of a deserter, and the firstborn of a woman who raised me with nothing to her but stubbornness and heartbreak.

Unfortunately, I take after them both.

The first mistake I never learned  from was “Don’t leave”. Now I cannot let go of those I love without first breaking my own fingers.

The second was “You are not half a person”. But that is all I have ever felt. People always came in pairs, or multiples thereof.

I am my mother’s boy, my father’s son. I am a lover who believes he does not merit love.

Used to be a jigsaw piece; I have filed down my edges, and now I do not fit with others.They couldn’t connect if they tried.

Nothing cuts me quite as cleanly as a mistake made in slow-motion. I have sliced my skin on all the bad decisions I took my time to make.
