Well, well, well, dear readers! Today marks two decades since The Marauders decided to pack up their musical mischief. Can you believe it? The once-most popular band of the ‘70s mysteriously called it quits, and oh, the rumours that still linger even after all these years.
Now, you’ve heard the hushed whispers, haven’t you? Theories abound about backstage feuds, alleged affairs, and the like. Word is James Potter, the charismatic guitarist, may have had more than just musical chemistry with Regulus Black, the lead singer’s enigmatic brother. Oh, it’s all too scandalous, isn’t it?
And let’s not forget the revelation of the real, genuine feud between Sirius Black, the strumming heartthrob lead singer, and Remus Lupin, the brooding bassist. A little more bite than bark, it seems.
Since that fateful gig in London, on December 1, 1981, where they left fans hanging, the band members have not been seen together.
The Marauders once owned the stage, riding high on the success of their award-winning album “Mischief Managed,” but for ten long years, their lips have been sealed. No interviews, no exposés. The band members and their inner circle have refused to give interviews on the record about what happened.
Arlette Starkweather and her parabatai, Francisca, uncover the family's history through the inheritance of Reginald's house and have some thoughts.
Who were Hodge's parents? What happened to them? Who was Samuel Blackburn? What happened to Hodge's childhood home?
The crowd, clad in their best white silk, filled the courtyard and in the mist they reminded of ghosts. With solemn faces and the stench of the dancing-halls that stuck on their masks of pretended pity, they mourned a man that they had not thought of for years. All actors in the play of the death’s parade. It was without a doubt that Reginald’s ex-wife came for the main role.
Ursula came with her second husband, Nikolai Orlov, about twenty years her senior. Giving teary speeches on honour in death, insincere condolences and an armload of rosemary, cypress and myrrh – now burning on the pyre and filling the air with eye-stinking herbal smoke. I could not bring myself to weep and felt the horrible urge to laugh at the absurdity. I have never met Ursula but upon meeting her, I understood the reason Hodge was so messed up.
Her face was thin, the pale skin stretched over her high cheekbones like paper about to be ripped. Her big blue eyes were fixed on the pyre, she was smiling as fire slowly consumed the body of the man she used to love.
I wondered if she came only to confirm that Reginald was dead. Watching the unfamiliar faces in the crowd, I wondered how many of them came for the same reason. I squeezed Fracas’ hand and in an answer she entwined her fingers with mine. That day was a chilly one, the heavy mist obscured the morning Sun, but the heat of the funeral pyre was scorching. I was glad for the white veil, shielding me from the fire, smoke and searching gazes.
I made an effort to think of some other matter. Crispa’s puppies Grandmother told me about but I would not see, because of the second-degree Academy finals. All the theory tests were behind us and the practical ahead. Tomorrow I shall draw my opponent for the first round. I would be glad for anyone but Kiyohime, she was way too ferocious in trying to please her demanding father. I tried not to think about what Grandmother said. She stood next to me with a serious expression, her steady gaze fixed on the horizon. I was wondering, what was she thinking about – weaving, dogs, the Wednesday ladies’ club she had to skip because of the funeral, me, the Academy?
Dispelling the hurt feelings, I settled on a safe train of thought – the praying mantis origami design that I have been struggling with for awhile. I solved the front leg dimensions but it made the head disproportional. I considered the head shape, perhaps making it more elliptical would leave me more paper for the leg proportions.
I was thinking that if I set the proportions as variables in the same equation and find the Pareto optimal solution, it would balance it out. But I was not sure that I wanted the head to be elliptical. There was only one way to find out and a funeral was not the right place for it. I ached to get back to my room. The air was heavy with the aromatic smoke, to my relief it forced me to cry and that made the rest of the funeral much easier.
After the fire came the family's speeches. I did not know Reginald enough and I heard about him too much to write a heartfelt speech. I was glad that Fracas wrote it for me the previous night.

“Tell me something about him. What should I write?” Fracas asked, bitting the teeth-marked top of the pen.
“I don’t know, he was an ill-tempered alcoholic.”
Fracas made a face. “Do you want me to write your speech or not?”
She sighed. “I don’t really remember much about him. I guess it’s more what I heard… but when I was a child, during the Midsummer festival, he bought me a cone of licorice candy.”
“Really? You usually do have something nice to say when licorice is involved,” Fracas said, amused.
Arlette laughed. “He was nice to me when I was little, but never talked to me after Mother died.”
“Why?” Fracas asked, putting the pen down.
“I have no idea, I’d like to know, I wondered on and off, I even wrote a letter but I’ve never sent it. I think I was afraid… and thirteen,” Arlette said, laughing. “The letter was pretty silly, perhaps it’s for the better that I didn’t send it.”
After a consideration, Fracas nodded, there was nothing Leta could do now to contact Reginald, except for Necromancy. Which would be as heinous and illegal as it could be. “Maybe, it’d be only a disappointment.”
“Perhaps. Write about the work he did, what an honourable Centurion he was, steadfast in his allegations and duties.. and so on. Just as what all the other people are going to say, but sadder,” Arlette said, shrugging. “He was a Captain, but lost a leg after a werewolf attack. I heard that’s the reason he began to drink.”
“That’s not surprising. If a werewolf bites my leg off, I’d drink too!” Fracas said, frowning. “Was he attacked because of Hogerius?” she added after a minute of hesitation.
“No. Mother and Hodge were kids, I don’t know why he was attacked, but Grandfather was there when it happened,” Arlette frowned, she knew nothing more of Percival than his brother Reginald.
It was a matter of fact that she would not know what to say at Grandfather’s funeral. And the memories of Mother were distant and faint like a dream of another world. She did not want to think about Mother’s speech – to admit that there was nothing she would have to say.
“Strange that werewolves would attack a Centurion. Maybe it was an accident, the beast was too young, hurt, angry…” Fracas said, breaking the silence.
Arlette nodded. “Perhaps. I wondered if that was the reason why Hodge joined the Circle.”
As Booker's love interesting in Changeling, we find out that she had a fairly tragic past with both her parents becoming Kavians when Cara was quite young...
While Cara isn't physically with Lizzy and Booker in book two, we still learn more about her and her past through her parents involvement with Connorbar Moore.
In fact, Cara's family home is one of the first places that Andric, Lizzy and Booker go after leaving Speculo.
It's a three floor manor house, and I did a rough sketch of the layout when I was away on holiday. It's since been digitized, but here's a picture the first draft of the ground floor...

“Mikey,” Donnie announced his presence and walked into the infirmary, in his hands a bowl of Applesauce with Apple slices (just to be safe). Mikey’s head shot up and looked at him, confused. “Got your food for lunch.” He held the bowl out in front of him, still feeling a little hesitant about uncuffing his brother. Not that the fact that he had cuffed him in the first place was any better. “I even made this portion bigger than last time.”
Mikey gave the bowl a sniff before diving in, not hesitating anymore after the last two times.
Things between them seem more relaxed now; Donnie at least was not as scared about possibly being bit, as he was yesterday. And Mikey appears to be doing better too, looking at how much more lively he is than before.
Movement out of the corner of his eye caught his attention and glancing over, Donnie almost lost it. A wagging turtle tail. Ooooh, he used all of his willpower to not laugh, what he wouldn’t give to record this!
While each of them had a tail, only Raph had it out most of the time because it was so big. It would be uncomfortable to retract and even then, it would not go in completely. The others, like Donnie, kept theirs mostly retracted in their shell, for different reasons.
Donnie, for safety reasons, did it in his lab and that eventually became a habit. Leo started hiding his because, for how dismissive or dramatic he acted, his tail would always reveal his true feelings. And everyone knew that Mikey started hiding his because of how embarrassed he was of it- of how small and stubby it was, and it having a small spot on its tip too!
Looking at his tail now, Mikey will not have to worry about that anymore, Donnie mused bittersweetly.
“Mikey…” The bowl fell on the floor with a plab!, spilling its content all over the floor. But Donnie did not care- he hardly noticed. “What did you-” All that mattered now was his brother and what he said. Donnie swallowed hard. “Can you repeat that?”
Mikey, who had looked forlornly at the spilt mess, tilted his head up. One might be deceived into thinking that he was not looking at anything (having no visible pupils and all), but Donnie felt his gaze resting on him.
He looked down and then back at Donnie, before opening his strong beak filled with sharp teeth. “Food?” He croaked, with a questioning tilt at the end.
“Oh-,” it felt difficult to breathe. “Oh Mikey, this is great!” But air never tasted more beautiful.
“You can talk! You can understand me!” Half-formed thoughts and ideas raced through his mind. “Is this a sign that whatever it was that turned you into this is wearing off? Or- or was it exposure? Socialising? Did I accidentally teach you that? Or-”
Theories and more theories streamed out of his mouth, pacing the room while rambling, not noticing how he walked through the spill on the floor.
(Watching the purple turtle pace, a stream of words falling from his mouth, “Mikey” thought how odd that turtle was. But being here taught “Mikey” many things- many interesting things. It made being stuck here bearable. And he did not find it in himself to want to leave either.)

(This can just be fluffy, but as an added bonus, maybe it’s also a way for someone to get *flirty* - or more - with their convo, making her blush like crazy, and the people in her group wanna know what’s going on, why are you blushing.....
