Let's Rant: Fat and Skinny Shaming
I find it ridiculous how people think they can win by shaming people for having different body types. You're thin - hah, you're an anorexic, stick-like giraffe. You're fat - hah, you're a whale and a disgusting excuse for a human being. NO.
This is not how it works.
Not only is it entirely unfair to assume something about a person based on their appearance/weight, you don't have to go on to insult them. You know why? Because that is not how decent people act. Just because someone's thin doesn't make them anorexic, just because someone's large doesn't make them a lazy slob. Some people are thin boned, some people are big boned. No one has a say in it, it's just how it is.
You can't just make assumptions based on the way someone is built. "0 Is Not a Size" annoys me beyond measure because, as a matter of fact, it is, because some people do wear it and live perfectly healthy lives free of eating disorders. However, it is still not okay to market shirts with "eat less" written on them like some kind of motivational slogan. Eat less, by all means, if that's what you want to do. However, do not eat less because someone told you that it was the only way anyone was ever go to look at you. If you like the way you look, look that way; the only standard you have to measure up to is your own - you don't owe a thing to society.
From a young age, we tell kids not to judge books by their covers - it's not really a good example for them if we go on to do exactly that. At least get to know someone before you assume that their life is easier than yours. Walk in someone else's shoes for a bit before you start slagging them off, especially for something as shallow as weight.
In conclusion, no one wins when you fat of skinny shame. People look different, they always have and always will. We can't all look like Carmen Carrera or Beyoncé, and you know why? Because we aren't all Carmen Carrera or Beyoncé - we are who we are and we all deserve to be whoever that is without unfounded judgment.
I'm out.
