Zerophilia (2005) + ridiculously trans dialogue

What's your favourite film?

oh that's an easy one - it's Dersu Uzala (1975, 144m), a (mostly) russian language film by Kurosawa Akira, the japanese filmmaker

it's the story of a sporadic but long friendship between Arsyenyev, a russian soldier who's leading a cartographic expedition in the far east Sikhote-Alin region of Russia in the early 20th century, and this man Dersu who just lives in the forest, and they meet and instantly become friends - we're not going to spoiler it

it's beautiful and painful and thoughtful, shot in 70mm wide screen with extraordinary footage of the diverse countryside out there (forest, jungle, tundra) and tigers! the music is lovely too

we first watched this film completely by chance - it was christmas and we were desperately avoiding The Sound of Music on BBC1, and found this film had just started on BBC2 instead (we must have been 15?) and we were completely mesmerised by it - of course it was a 4:3 ratio on a shitty little b&w telly, and it wasn't until 1998 that we finally got to see it in full wide screen cinema glory

regarding The Sound of Music, when we were 8 we had a crafts teacher at school who insisted on playing the soundtrack LP every class - and we got so sick of it that we made a promise never to see the film - which we kept until we were 40 and decided to see what all the fuss was about

we still hate the songs, they're just too teeth-achingly sweet - but we love this part

Dersu Uzala will always be our favourite, but we have a load of other films we watch over and over - and one that springs to mind for very different reasons is Zerophilia (2005, US, 90m) which is about a teenage boy who discovers he has the Z-chromosome, which means interesting things in terms of switching between (binary) sexes

it's a silly lighthearted film, but it's also really compelling if you're like us, an agender trans system whose inner people have differing ideas about what sexes (or variations on the theme) they'd like to be, and in a certain way it isn't lighthearted or silly, and also everyone's very cute - especially Luca :)

Cine: Zerophilia (2005)

Es una extraña mezcla entre comedia romántica, ciencia ficción y algún componente dramático. Un soplo de aire fresco en universo del cine LGBTQ en el que el director y guionista Martin Curland establece una idea interesante: ¿y si, frente a un estímulo sexual, vieras cómo tu cuerpo empieza a manifestar características del sexo opuesto?

Esto es lo que le ocurre, precisamente, al pobre de Luke (Taylor Handley) cada vez que se topa con Michelle (Rebecca Mozo), la chica que le gusta, a quien abandona luego de uno de esos molestos episodios durante una cena cuando advierte que le han crecido pechos turgentes. Al día siguiente, el muchacho la visita a su casa con la idea de disculparse, pero se topa con su hermano Max (Kyle Schmid), que le manifiesta agriamente su disgusto.

Luke, confundido por su situación (al igual que su mejor amigo Keenan, interpretado por Dustin Seavey, y su novia, Janine, en la piel de Alison Folland), recibe algo de luz cuando conoce a la Dra. Sydney Catchadourian (Gina Bellman), quien le comunica que su peculiar condición (desde luego, ficticia para nosotros) se llama "zerofilia" y que debe convertirse en una mujer hecha y derecha para facilitar su tratamiento. Así, una sesión de masturbación lo convierte en Luca (Marieh Delfin), personalidad que adopta frente a Max cuando descubre que se siente atraído/a hacia el joven.

Y aún le esperan más sorpresas y desventuras.

El filme juega con la confusión sexual, y no sólo la de género: los protagonistas deambulan entre lo que son, lo que quieren ser (y lo que no) y la aceptación propia y ajena, además de la búsqueda del propio deseo.
