“Yeah, dude, no problem, I can wait til after.” Zero responded with a shrug of her shoulders. She was never one to try and interfere into someone’s personal routine-- even her best friend’s. You had to do what you needed to do and that was that. Casually, but also nervously, Zero shoved her hands in her pockets.

“Hell yeah, I was wonderin’ if you’d be down for some burgers and ice cream. Maybe... as a date?” They’d been on one before, but Zero didn’t exactly know what this relationship consisted of. Were they just friends?

Zero never thought she’d tell Olivia her true feelings, but it just came out. However, what came next was ever more of a surprise. At first she was silent, but then she finally answered. “Of course, dude. I think you’re just incredible. As a person and a skater. It is cause I like you and more,” Even though Zero was openly gay, finding a partner in crime was the hard part-- that, and a friend. But now she had both. 

Lowering her camera from her eyes, her own cheeks flushed with colour, which was rare. “Your statement is true. Though even as a friend, I’d still be here, takin’ pics for ya.”

Zero couldn’t justify her actions in kissing the other. She showed up to this party because she’d seen the flyer around campus, and being talked about constantly throughout the halls. So, she thought she’d check it out. It was disappointing until the kiss. One that Zero initiated without consent, and well-- didn’t even know if the other was attracted to her. It was confusing. And it made her walk away in embarrassment. Not that Zero kissed everyone who tried to befriend her.

Focusing on zipping up her jacket, she avoided eye contact with Nova. She hadn’t expected her to follow her, nor talk to her ever again. “I’m fine,” she quietly replied as she moved to walk out of the party, and down the hall of the school. As she felt the warm hand upon her forearm, she stopped in her tracks, eyeing Nova. “I’m sorry about the kiss.” It was a fight or flight reaction, but Zero always flighted away. 

She didn’t know why people didn’t like her, or try to find interest in her. Was she that weird? Or were people racist? Or was it even deeper than that? It made Zero question everything she did, even her passion for photography. And being gay could’ve been part of it. Zero didn’t want to find out, but she knew that kissing Nova wasn’t a mistake like she played it off. “I liked kissing you Nova, but uh... I didn’t want to scare you away, so I left before you could react. I’m all about makin’ people comfortable, even if I gotta risk shit for myself. I’m sorry, dude.”

“Hey dude,” Zero introduces her presence as she returns from being outside, having clearly been rained on by this upcoming storm. She’s lucky she’s back home and was able to skateboard fast enough to return into the dorm safe and sound. “There’s a thunderstorm warning. So if the wifi goes out, you know why.” She’s not one to judge her roommate for what she does. They live together and things are fine. Of course as an openly gay woman, Zero can’t help but crush on the Effie, but subtly keeps it to herself. Are they friends? She hopes so, they seem to get along, at least in her mind. 

Moving past the living room, she goes rummaging through the closet for a towel to dry off before going into her room to change out of her clothes. As a photographer, she’d love to go outside and take photos, but not if there’s a thunderstorm. Plus, she’d rather take that precaution because she doesn’t like getting sick. “You hungry?” Zero questions as she throws her wet jacket against the side of the bathtub and takes off her shirt to change it with a tank top to comfortably wear. “I wanted to get delivery, but I can see what is in the fridge if you are. I ain’t that much of a cook.” Clearly.

Zero never really had friends. But many people she came across- even clients, she grew to be particularly fond of them. Bambi included. It was like she embraced being an outcast, or at least being different. That’s always how she felt. She shut off her camera and placed it besides her, starting grinning warmly. “You can ask anytime, y’know, I’m down for 20 questions,” she chuckled a little bit. It was true. However, it’s not like she had a particularly exciting life.

“I have nothin’ to hide dawg, we’re both cool. I’m just a student with a keen eye for photography. But what things about me could possibly be noteworthy?”

The silence was nice, other than the occasional passing plane in the evening sky. Every-time one took lift off, they watched it from their spot, on the rooftop of a convenience store. It was risky but a comfortable place to sit other than in their car. Plus, it gave them a great view of the new city they stopped in. Roadtrips could get tiring, seeing the same old thing, however, even the photographer found beauty from ordinary surroundings— boring crops, beautiful mountains, clouds and nightfall, and even their beautiful partner… Here she sat, side by side with the other, while having bought them an iced cream cone. Zero grabbed snacks for themselves but for later on, right now, the temperature and scenery was too good to pass up. 

Rearranging herself to get comfortable, Zero lowered her knees and sat criss-crossed. Her smile accompanied a content breath as next one disappeared behind the fluffy clouds. The sun was also showcasing a beautiful hue, so she grabbed her Canon camera from besides her and held it up. Ivy was wonderfully surrounded by the light, but she was what made the photo TEN-TIMES better. “Psst,” A laugh came out, as she looked through the viewfinder. “Turn around.”

#93. Truth Hurts by Lizzo

“It’s raining out there, but I got some fresh photos with the bomb lighting, so I guess that’s a plus.” Was Zero quoting Lizzo there? Yes, yes she was. She just discovered the singer, and that’s the only music she’d been listening to for the past week. Every song was empowering and it made her feel inspired. But, it was the truth though; she felt very proud of herself for getting some really interesting pictures all awhile it started to pour heavily. Luckily, if the power went out, her laptop could withstand hours without it’s charger, and you didn’t need the internet to use Photoshop. However, there would be a delay in posting them. That didn’t matter-- what mattered was setting out of soaked clothes.

She grinned at Louise, as she walked by the couch and headed into the bathroom to take off her jacket and socks to hang them up. “How was your day?” Zero asked, always genuinely curious. She cared about the other, and was glad to have a decent roommate while away from home and in school.

“Yo, Mallory.” Zero greeted in return. Out of all the college students on campus, the only one that Zero had met was Mal. Not that she was actively looking for people to hang out with, but it was nice to have someone around. A friend was better than none, especially in a new environment. She missed her siblings as they were like the only friends she had, but they were older and off to better things like herself.

Every time Mallory was around, she noticed her enthusiasm and bubbly personality and it brought a smile to her face. That, and there was a KitKat being presented to her. “Wow, what a sweet gesture,” Her jokes lacked although she managed to chuckle. “Thanks for the chocolate bar, Mallory.” And with that, she reached out to take it and broke it into two for herself and two for her friend-- sliding the wrapper back in their direction. A bite was taken before acknowledging her question with a shake of her head. “Nope, just a lone wolf. But I’d be happy to work on it with you, no problem.” Even in a College where she wanted to study photography, the rest of the classes were mandatory and no escape from it, that included English. Not that Zero was bad, but hands-on work was more suitable for her than pencil to paper. 

“It’s not due for awhile, but if we get ahead start on it, we can meet the deadlines without stressin’.” A 2,000 word essay was not going to be easy, but it was something they’d probably be good at splitting. That, and she could easily cover the collage part. A project about the life of a celebrity seemed interesting, but dissecting it from a social media perspective and interviews would be an thoughtful take on the topic like their professor suggested. “Ya know what, why don’t we hash out the deets later? Pick a time, and we can meet at the campus library?”
