new words just dropped! 🗣️
Merriam-Webster added a whole bunch of new words to the dictionary in September:
Ngl, this update is a big one
It's actually a pretty interesting mix of words that have definitely been in circulation for a while + some pretty new ones—so new, in fact, that I’m surprised Merriam-Webster included them!
The first known example of rizz is from 2021, for example. Will it be more than just a blip in the social landscape, or will it gain traction?
By contrast, zhuzh in the meaning given goes back to 1970, was part of Polari (gay men’s slang) before that, and was borrowed from Yiddish prior to that! So it has a much longer pedigree than rizz.
