Found in swampy forests and wetlands in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela, these small herons are often found near streams and pools. Hunting from low perches or while walking slowly on the ground, they probably feed on small fish and flying insects. They are classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN due to habitat loss and hunting.
