CHINESE REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS: MYSELF IN CHINESE – ZIJI 自己, BEN SHEN 本身 AND BEN REN 本人

本人 Běnrén is deemed as a more formal word for emphasising ‘oneself‘ or ‘myself‘ and not frequently heard in casual conversation. Some examples are situations where one is making a guarantee of something, reassurance or referring to someone of higher authority.

Notice that the sentence uses both the two terms 自己 and 本身 together? It is also very commonly used by the Chinese to highlight the point of “oneself”.

The sentences below can use either自己 Zìjǐ or 本身 Běnshēn to further strengthen the emphasis of oneself.
In such sentence construction, the Chinese reflexive pronouns can be dropped too. Grammatically, it is correct since the Chinese Reflexive Pronouns only act as a supplemental emphasis to the mentioned subject.

Ziji
In my Walk Like a Buddha book, this guy Rinzler talks a lot about ziji, or confidence that comes from living with an open heart.
I don’t know how to explain it but I feel like I truly know what this word means and I know what I feel like when I radiate ziji. I want to learn how to cultivate and channel this into my daily life.
If I could be consistently confident and not just randomly confident sometimes about things that don’t make sense, I think I would feel more balanced. Ziji is about bringing your most authentic self to everything you do.
Rinzler says, "The more we are available, the more possibility we see in the world and the more magnetizing we are in all ways."
I think I can do that.
