“What’s up Miles Nation?”

A shiver goes down Zach’s spine at the whispered words. The first time around, during the podcast, his body’s reaction surprised him, but they quickly changed the subject and he forgot about it.

But when he got to his desk and started editing the pod, it happened  again — a full body shiver, this time, at Miles’ whisper.

Before he knew it, he was cutting that sound bite and replaying it, a mesmerizing loop for his ears only. Soon, it starts eliciting more than a shiver — he starts squirming in his seat, his brain supplying uninvited images of his employee whispering in his ear, wrapping his arms around him...

“Zach?”

It takes Zach a second to realize that the whisper in his ear and the presence at his side is Real Life Miles, not Fantasy Miles, and when he does he nearly jumps out of his skin.

“Miles!” His voice goes all squeaky. “Why are you whispering?”

Zach thinks he can see a mischievous glint in Miles’ eyes but it’s gone in a second. “I didn’t wanna bother you.” A beat. “I see now that I did, sorry.”

“No, no, that’s fine, I was just in the zone,” Zach lies. “What’s up?”

Miles asks him about some form for next week’s shoot and Zach tells him it’s probably on Keith’s desk.

“Got it! Thanks, boss!” Miles squeezes Zach shoulders and walks out, leaving him with a whirlwind of questions.

Why can Zach still feel Miles’ touch, his shoulder tingling with it?

Why is Miles always whispering?

And why did Miles have to go and call him boss, reminding him of all the (very good) reasons Zach should take these questions and shove them deep in the darkest recesses of his soul?

(Oh, and why did Zach like Miles calling him boss, but we’re not touching that one with a twenty-foot pole.)

Is it just Zach or is Miles constantly whispering now?

Maybe he just didn’t use to notice it.

Or maybe Miles knows.

Maybe Miles noticed Zach’s reaction and wants to torture him, thinks it’s funny.

Either way, Zach has to stop wearing his headphones while recording the trypod — he can’t deal with these whispers directly in his ears anymore.

(No, we won’t talk about how Zach keeps listening to the whispering sound bites when he can’t sleep.)

Too often, they find each other the only ones left at the office and Zach wonders if Miles is doing it on purpose.

“You’re young, go out and live your life!” Zach says late one Friday night.

“I am,” Miles say.

Zach sends a pointed look at Miles’ laptop, whose screen is showing a close-up of Keith eating.

“I highly doubt staring at this is your favourite way to have fun.”

“This is not what I was staring at,” Miles whispers.

Zach shivers all over — he can’t help it, he’s conditioned by now.

“Miles,” Zach says warningly.

Miles takes off his headphones and switches off his laptop. “Here. I’m off the clock, now. I’m not an employee. Is this what’s stopping you?”

“Miles,” Zach says again, but pleadingly, this time. Almost desperate.

“Come here, Zach,” Miles whispers, holding out his hand.

It’s like Zach’s brain is not in control anymore. Instead, the only part of him not completely flustered is the part that made him shiver every time, the part that made him listen to these sound bites over and over again.

This part makes Zach cross the room to Miles’ desk. Lean over. And close his eyes as Miles gives him the best, toe-curlingest kiss of all time.

“Oof,” Zach says.

“I know. Took you long enough.”
