Do you intend to work as part of a group or individually? Please list the reason for your decision?
I am working in a group with two other people because I think we will all work well together and all have something to offer when working on the zine.
Write a short paragraph (200-500 words) on what your zine is going to be about and what topics/themes you will explore. For example you might wish to explore the theme of mental health, why have you chosen this topic, what specific mental health issues will you look into, how will you create images to portray this theme?
Our zine focuses on youth culture and how our generation are expected to follow standards that are set by society. We’ve called the zine ‘Lieability’ because it goes off or the stigma that young people are seen as a burden/liability. In our zine we’re going to cover the topics of the pandemic with affecting young people’s mental health, body image, the LGBT+ community, toxic masculinity and the butterfly effect of it all. We only want to scratch the surface of mental health because we don’t want the zine to trigger any readers so in the contents we will put a content warning next to the article that contains some hard hitting material.
In the zine, each person that has contributed to it will have a couple of pages to talk about their chosen topic that they are passionate about and has helped them through tough times. For me I will be talking about creating music and how it helped me through the pandemic. I will also talk about how it has helped me to cope with overwhelming situations over these past few years. It has been a huge help in allowing me to be able to express myself.
On the centre spread we will have a comparison of stereotype versus reality and have a series of images that show what older generations think of us and then images of how we really are.
Make a moodboard (like the examples below) of the type of imagery you wish to create/include in your zine:
What photographic/editing techniques do you want to explore and why (50-100 words)?
I want to explore a lot of portraiture photography and show the duality of a mental illness and how it has been affecting the younger generation. To do this I will experiment with different lighting, using reflections, various different angles and ask the model(s) to show how they want to be seen by people around them and then how they feel on the inside. I also want to ask people from the younger generation to express themselves freely so I can show that they can’t be tied down by a controlling and gender normative society. I want to experiment with using light and dark vignettes to show positivity and negativity around how this generation should act and how we want to act.
What research will you do primary and secondary? Please try to do at least one form of primary research e.g. a survey or test shoot. Please list here at least 5 references that you will use for research e.g. photographers/artists websites or media/news sites. Don’t forget to also add in an example front cover that you have already looked at and like, saying why you chose it and what is appealing about the design and use of image and text (150-200 words)?
For inspiration for the front cover we found an image of someone facing a wall with a barcode on their neck but we cannot find the image anymore.
I will also do some research on how photographers express mental health through photography.

I will run both a survey and test shoot for this zine. I will run a survey on how the younger generation feel they are perceived and how they actually are and how it can force someone to live a double life and hide who they really are. I will keep the submissions anonymous so that people feel like they can fully express their feelings. I will also complete another series of photos where I ask someone to show how they want to present themselves and then how they’ve been raised to present themselves.
Finally how do you intend to present your zine - printed or digital? Where will you get it printed, what software will you use (25-50 words)?
We are going to present our zine as a digital copy so that it is more accessible to a wider audience. We will use InDesign and Photoshop for this zine.
