June 3rd is World Bicycle Day.

Few people remember today that the founder of the USSR, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, was an avid fan of the bicycle and even, as they would say today, a rafting biker, a lover of extreme mountain bike riding. Although, there is nothing surprising in this. Lenin lived for some time in Europe, where cycling was always held in high esteem. And how old was “grandfather Lenin” during the years of emigration -- 30-40? It may be a bit late to participate in the “Tour de France”, but for regular cycling -- the best age! And indeed, a bicycle was a much more familiar means of transportation for Lenin than an armored car.

He tirelessly traveled with Krupskaya around France and Switzerland. He found it good from all sides: accessible inexpensive recreation, physical activity, fresh air. At that time, it was customary to master a bicycle not on your own, as children do now, but with an instructor. So the Bolshevik couple clearly first took cycling lessons and only then took to the real road.

They also involved their friends and comrades in cycling. One of Lenin’s closest associates, Georgy Zinoviev, recalled: “How many times in Paris V. I. took us on a bicycle ride for 50-70 miles just to swim and walk on the picturesque bank of a beautiful river. A fifty-mile bike ride to a beautiful French forest to pick lilies of the valley was considered a common thing.”

Zinoviev’s wife, Zlata Lilina, also said this: “V. I. worked 6 days a week, not giving himself a minute to rest. But one day a week... he rested completely. Then all four of us — Vladimir Ilyich, Nadezhda Konstantinovna, Zinoviev and I — would sit on our bicycles and ride out of town from 6 a.m. until 10-11 p.m. The condition that V. I. set was not a word about politics. The first time we went, it seemed strange to me: what would we talk about if we couldn’t talk about politics? But it turned out that you could talk about many things with V. I. without touching on politics. V. I. was an excellent cyclist.”

Lenin and his companions’ routes often ran along extreme mountain trails in the Alps. When Vladimir Ilyich’s comrades got tired, he slowed down and rode alongside them, urging them to make a final effort and finish the route. At that time, cycling in the Alps was becoming fashionable among tourists.

Ok well if zinoviev and kamenev MUST be entered separately which is frankly sacreligious I will submit propaganda for zinoviev but not kamenev since who gaf about him 😭🙏. Zinoviev imo was the most likely bolshevik to have actually been queer other than the canon ones like chicherin and yezhov… frankly I don’t know what exactly all the people in this bracket are competing for but if it’s for homosexuality he should win. he was very effeminate to the point where it’s actually harder to find a political cartoon that DOESNT portray him as a woman (well, maybe I am exaggerating slightly…). Many contemporaries commented on his FAGCENT or “his high, monotonous falsetto voice” (fischer; geyer; serge also commented on his voice becoming “effeminate” in its high notes) or compared him to a woman in either behavior or appearance or affect (Sheridan comes to mind first, but there were others. Lih claims that hostility towards Zinoviev within the Russian party often expressed itself in emphasising Zinoviev's “feminine” qualities.) Also he had BPD which as we know is a woman + femmes disease. Also he looked like a faggot and had that weird thing with kamenev and wore a stupid ribbon. I still think they should count as a single entity though….
