When Kung-Fu Hustle meets a zombie flick....
You get "Zombiology: Enjoy Yourself Tonight", as someone described it. To be honest it's more of "If you enjoyed Kung Fu Hustle or Kung pow enter the fist. You'll like it" and I kinda agree to it. I say if you ever saw Yakuza Vampire, then you'll get the tone a bit.
Zombiology is a Chinese horror comedy directed by Alan Lo with a bit of martial arts and of course sci fi. The story follows these two young men Niu Shanlong (played by Michael Ning) and Zhou Zhirang (played by Louis Cheung) who works as arcade mascots and work prop designers for a theater for their adoptive aunt Ye Caishan (played by Carrie Ng) , who wanted to become superheroes and save the world. Unfortunately for them, their home is being sold off and they have to move. Along with Niu's father (played by Alex Man) being released from prison for 15 years, for causing an accident that dramatized Ye and trying to make up for what he has done. To make matters worse, all of Hong Kong island is being overruned by zombies that are being lead by a chicken charcater that came from the boys imagination. So it is up to them to finally become the heroes they wanted to be and save the world.
I quite enjoyed this film, the beginning had this brilliantly done animated segment, then we cut to this reality. The first 30-45 mins sets the scene and tells us the situation of our characters, before we get the into the thick of it. Kind of a way like Shaun of the Dead was, but with a little more laughs a long the way. The movie is bizarre in a good way, with the addition of zombies. We get a supernatural square chicken that lays eggs, that act as bombs. The biggest thing that impressed me the most is the chicken, the costume was well done. The only thing I think that threw me off was the subtitles (I've watched this off of Amazon Prime), most of the names seemed to be off a lot that I had to look up the names of the characters. I want to believe that they were using nicknames, but something felt off. Other than that, I liked it. It's a good time burner and it got me invested in the characters. Ontop of that, it's left open! So I kinda hope there's a sequel to conclude the story.
Enjoyed the film, loved the characters, loved the chicken, a bit skeptic with the subtitles. If you like Kung-Fu Hustle, or Shaun of the Dead. I think you'll ljke this too.
