my “Marmalade Tabby” soap and sample vial of “Kuiper Belt Objects Unite in Vengeance” came in! (They also threw in a bonus sample called “SR-71 Bakery Van” which is supposed to smell like sugar cookies and jet fuel.)
Okay, how cool would it be if someone like Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, Conjure Oils, or ZOMGSmells came out with an official line of Welcome to Night Vale scents?
my sense of smell is not very good. I mean.. I can smell small amounts of things well, but I am very bad at identifying what they are. I am not In Touch With My Nose. so that is the disclaimer.
I have also been trying to find a perfume I actually like for a long time; most of the problem is that lots of stuff makes my nose hurt, especially if I am smelling it constantly. I have turned to ZOMG Smells for tiny samples of nerdily named scents, and have been pleased
today’s experiment is Blue Dwarf Star v 1.0. here is the description:
"Blue Dwarf Star has real blue tansy oil, which is a deep indigo blue and tints the scent in your vials faintly blue-green. I am ridiculously excited and dorktastic about this one, BECAUSE: stars go through life cycles, and I have red musk, blue tansy, white musk, and black musk in this mix to pay homage to that cycle. The other notes holding Blue Dwarf Star together are wormwood, dragon's blood, red resin, and a few uplifting drops of iris, gardenia and hyacinth. It's not exactly a floral, despite this; it's very complex, a little sweet and a little bitter, with a hint of earthy mint from the tansy."
it is SUPER NICE! that is.. pretty much my only comment. uh, it smells like incense. I would wear this frequently. Unfortunately, it is an experimental thing only being sent out as a bonus squee rn, so I will have to wait.
there were two soap samples AND two perfume samples thrown in, which is more than usual (a ‘thank you for your patience’ gift, maybe?).
all of the samples seem to be new fragrances that aren’t for sale yet, which is cool because I was worried they were shutting down but clearly not if they’re working on new stuff.
gonna review them but keeping it below a cut because it got long.
the first perfume sampler is called ‘freyja’s sweet ride’ and in the bottle it smells exactly like this little wiccan shop/apothecary up the road from my house. incense, like nag champa and something herbal I couldn’t place, but no overpowering patchouli. on my skin it took a slightly sweeter note that reminded me of necco wafer as it dried, but then went back to incense. clean and earthy but more unisex than the name implied. smells more like a well maintained altar than a chariot pulled by a team of cats, but that’s probably a good thing.
the other perfume sampler was called ‘raptor daddy 1.1′ which presumably means there’s more than one raptor daddy variant blend floating around in sampler land. oh man. the name is appropriate as hell. it smells like leather and damp earth, with a faint note of something that smelled like a clean scented men’s deodorant in the bottle but got a little baby powder-like on my skin while drying but thankfully faded back out. almost definitely what tumblr’s favorite raptor daddy smells like, assuming Chris Pratt is a Speed Stick Aqua kinda guy. gonna try to convince one of my guy friends to give it a test run and report back.
first soap sample is not labeled which is a bummer because I kinda like it but wouldn’t really be able to order it since I’m not sure what it is, but I THINK it’s ‘baby unicorn birthday party’ or something new that’s very similar. the bar itself is white with pink glitter, and smells super sweet with no earthy or spicy notes to balance it back out (which rules out most of their sweeter scents). there’s a floral to it, possibly rose and jasmine, but tough to place in soap form. reminds me of the floral flavored little candy pearls my mémère used to have in fancy tins on her coffee table.
the second soap sample is a pretty purple-black bar with blue glitter, labeled as ‘siamese squid nebula’ which is sold as a perfume but not listed as a soap yet. they describe it on the site as “Golden amber, sandalwood, pale cedar, and celery seed over neroli, spikenard, and a squish of tangerine.” the scent is definitely genderless and has that stone-and-sea quality that a lot of their space-themed scents seem to carry. reminds me a bit of spacebat, but ...heavier. if that makes sense. the neroli and amber give it a syrupy sweetness but it’s balanced out well by the earthier cedar, celery seed, and spikenard. didn’t smell tangerine at all, but haven’t tried using it yet so who knows, it might pop a little on the skin. smells like an ominous seaside cave in autumn without the bitter, rotten tang of low tide.
and the only new fragrance I bought was ‘spicebat’, a limited-run fragrance from november that got to stay longer than most of their limited scents, either because of it’s popularity or because of whatever mishap has them so behind on filling orders right now. whatever the reason, I’m thankful it stayed up so long, because I really like it! spacebat is one of my favorites after my go-to ‘lola’ (which has kind of become my signature scent and was the thing I was stressing about being out of), and this feels like a perfect mash-up of the two. sweeter and more spicy than spacebat but earthier than lola. with dominant notes of leather and mulling spices, I can see why it was a holiday-run scent because there’s something very wintery about it. as much as I love it,I don’t see myself getting much wear out of it until probably late november. I doubt it will still be up on the site by then, though, so I would suggest ordering soon if it interests you.
most importantly, I now have a giant bottle of lola that’s gonna last me probably two years, so I won’t need to worry about running out again for a looong time so long as I don’t spill it!
so my order from zomg smells just arrived and i can't even deal right now! I had written a long and rambling message saying that I remembered something from the newsletter about new little bottles that had a screw-top instead of a pull-top and I had forgotten what they were called and had deleted the newsletter but if that sounded familiar and they didn't cost more could I have my smells in them please? And they wrote a message saying that those were the 2 ml bottles and they do cost more but you get 2 mls instead of 1 ml plus it's a screwtop and i always spill the pull-tops and they included a freebie 2ml bottle which is just the sweetest fucking thing and the perfume in the 2 ml is incredibly good! It's called Earth and Heaven (http://www.zomgsmellsshop.com/earth-and-heaven-1/) and is described as smelling "like a celestial compost heap" which is a really cool way to characterize this smell! Wet on my skin it smells like fresh henna and this tea I loved when I was little called Mandarin Orange Spice and I'm so excited to see how it evolves! It'd be great for anyone of any gender tbh, just really wonderful. This is the best gift to myself ever and I haven't even tried the ones I actually, you know, ordered and paid for. Plus the 2ml bottle is so cool and convenient and I definitely plan on getting them in the future, makes my life so much easier. Zomg smells is my new go-to for gifts to myself. The greatest possible number of stars to them.
Okay, so it's the eighth. One hopes you'll excuse this one's shameful tardiness and feel the good wishes emnating from its unworthy self.
January's Seventh is....
The Thousand-Fingered hand of Fortune Crosses its Fingers
This one was fun to make and to do the art for. There's only forty fingers but you can imagine the rest of them skulking around.
Also, because I've seen this wonderful goddamn seal blebbing around for a while and hadn't really had an occasion to post about it, allow me to share it with you. Bleb Seal is us. Me. You. The world. Bleb Seal knows it's cold and grody and sucks and it DUN WANA but...it gotta. And it do. BLEB!
