Hello!

The Armand perfume, I wonder because the top notes are white musk, iris, and frankincense—- is it sweet smelling?

oh nooooo i'm gonna have to put on a little more just to be sure oh no what a tragedy oh woe oh sad day for meeeeeeeeee.....

Hmmmm I would not call it *sweet* per se, no. It's not an intensely floral sweet like you'd get in a lot of femme perfumes. There is *A* sweetness, but it's like.... you know how very fresh milk is sweet, but not in the way candy is sweet? Like that. Not a femme sweetness, an Amadeo and Arun sweetness. On the drydown it goes to a lovely rich incense and wood. It smells like sex, but not sordid sex. Holy sex. A mysterious and alluring god you met in an ancient villa in Pompeii, that kind of sex.

Imagine the French-Bengali smokeshow. Like that. That's what it smells like.

It is the sort of sex and sweetness you'd want to find when you nuzzle your nose right up under somebody's ear, and then you exhale all the breath in your lungs and sort of melt onto them for some mad fuckin snuggles.

Disclaimer: Hello, I have been a BPAL collector for 20 years. If you are not experienced with perfume, you should know that perfume varies wildly depending on an individual's body chemistry. Several times, I've tested a BPAL perfume on myself and a friend, and what comes out lovely and round and full on me can come out smelling like lightning on someone else. Likewise, a rose-based perfume that smells like a garden of a thousand flowers on a friend smells like straight up SOAP on me (i have given away perfumes to friends because they were pretty mid on me but absolutely TRANSCENDENT on someone else).

So all these descriptions are a depiction of how MY OWN body chemistry reacts with the oils in the Armand perfume, and it is going to smell different on you.

(PRO TIP -- if you're worried about spending money on a bottle and having it not work on you, a good way to wear perfumes that react badly with your body chemistry is to buy a perfume locket. It's a locket with holes in it, and you put a couple of drops of perfume on a tissue or a scrap of cloth and put it in the locket. Your body heat warms the metal to set off the perfume around you, but the locket keeps it separate from your actual body, so it will smell the way it does in the bottle instead of transforming on your skin.)

disclaimer: this is how it smells on my skin! perfumes can be wildly different on different people. i will do my best to describe it in full but keep in mind it might smell different on you! anything unofficial is strictly my opinion :)

official notes: white musk, iris, frankincense, resinous woods, blackened clove, blood-tinged incense

unofficial notes: chai tea, black pepper, warm spices, vanilla milk, creamed wildflower honey, dragon’s blood incense

unofficial accords: amber, warm spicy, woody, musky, animalic, aromatic, powdery, leather

what it feels like: it’s an october night and you’re in your room. there’s a full moon that you can see from the window. the air outside is crisp. you have a chai latte on your bedside table and incense burning. you’re waiting for someone. a strange soul who will sit near you and touch their fingers to yours. someone who lets you press in close and smell where their neck meets their collarbone. someone gorgeous and slightly dangerous. who must have been an ancient creature in a different life (or this one). who wears moroccan oil in their curls and smokes clove cigarettes. who brings you an old book of poetry from their personal collection. you imagine taking a shower with that person. the smell only becoming magnified, like wet hickory wood chips and herbs. like walking into a crystal shop. and underneath it something animal, skin close, intimate, powerful, entirely heady.

what it smells like: the first thing you smell is incense. at first hints of nag champa then settling into a deep intense dragon’s blood. then comes the sharpness of black pepper and warm spices: cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cardamom. after a few minutes there is a distinct sweetness. a hint of leather, subtle powder, the faintest vanilla, milkiness. like spices toasted and crushed in a mortar and pestle and added to steamed milk to make a spicy, sweet drink that warms your body from the inside. as it fades you’re left with that lingering smell of incense coupled with creamed wildflower honey. an herbal sweetness.

similar perfumes: this is like the nighttime cousin of angels’ share by kilian, also has hints of whisky 1969 by thin wild mercury (which i’ve actually always considered a daniel perfume)

lasting power: this is a perfume oil so it lasts quite a while on the skin. it stays close to the skin, unlike a spray-on perfume that acts like a cloud of scent, this is more intimate. someone would have to be near you to smell it. i put it on this morning and can still smell it after 6 hours. i’ll update this at the end of the day!

*update it’s been 12 hours and i still smell it! (faint but still lovely)

Review of the Armand perfume from BPAL

Been following you since LiveJournal era and IIRC you’ve been a fan of BPAL perfume oils for like 20 years- did you know they’ve released an official IWTV/TVL line of scents? You probably know already, but they did one for Sam Barclay!

Oh, yes, my friend, I did know! I’ve been ordering from them since I first stumbled across their website in 2005 👌🏼 I’ve been on their mailing list for that long, so any time something new has come along, I’ve heard about it pretty fast.

When I got the email a few weeks ago about the first wave of TVL scents they released, this household ordered Armand and Vampire DJ of Some Renown right away. Both wear well on my skin, but Sam’s scent is sweeter than Armand’s on me and has better staying power. I have to put on a lot more of the Armand scent to get it to last all day, I’m finding. Sam’s though, just a tiny drop on each wrist and my neck pulse points and I end up smelling like that for 48 hours straight. They did a great job on that one!

I also saw as of today that they’ve released Daniel and a few Lestat song titles that have notes in them I know would do well on me, so I guess another order will have to be placed soon 🤣 I find myself wondering if they’ll do ones focusing on major relationships/characters in combination. When they released their Good Omens book-based scents in 2012, Aziraphale and Crowley were separate scents but the hack with those is layering one over the other/mixing them. They’re designed to be worn together as long as your body chemistry plays well with the two when combined; it’s clever!

I don't check BPAL's website super often anymore because I'm still working my way through my current collection, so I was surprised to see their TVL collaboration!

It'll be interesting to see how many fans of the show discover BPAL through the collab, but I have to say I'm a bit disappointed at how safe the blends seem to be. I really wanted at least one to lean into less conventional notes like blood and dirt. I could be wrong about the prominence of some of the blood notes mentioned though, so I'll keep an eye on reviews.

I also unfortunately missed Ajevie's decant preorders, so I probably won't be buying this time around. Ah well...

The Veilguard as BPAL perfumes

Inspired by this post by @emmg but I'm a Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab devotee, so I decided to pick out perfume oils for the companions based solely on vibes.

Bellara

Zephyr: A gentle white scent, breezes laced with the scent of springtime blooms and citrus. Lemon, lemon verbena, neroli, white musk, white florals, white sandalwood, China musk, bergamot and a drop of vanilla.

Bel makes me think of bright scents: citrus, light florals, dry woods.

Davrin

Doc Constantine: Sheer musk, cedar smoke, fir needle, chaparral, black amber and leather.

He smells like hot skin and leather and rough landscapes. (I nearly went with Smut but I'm trying to stick to stuff that's in stock lol).

Emmrich

Black Haüs: Overgrown ivy creeping through a neglected lavender patch, a whiff of long-forgotten cologne, indigo oudh, mahogany, and teakwood, ti leaf, ectoplasmic musk, and aged leather.

He's got a ghostly sort of scent: a sophisticated fougère mingled with funerary incense and leather book covers.

Harding

Take a Knee: This is the scent of apple pie, as American as it gets, and a smudged grass stain.

I mean, she's not American but tell me Lace wouldn't smell like freshly cut grass and apples.

Lucanis

Iago: sinuous black musk, wet leather and vetiver.

Lucanis smells like hot leather and an expensive musk. Add a drop of coffee in there and it's perfect.

Neve

Highwayman: Vetiver with gardenia, blood red rose, night-blooming jasmine, a dash of cinnamon and a faint hint of leather

That hint of noir mystery extends to Neve's scent: femme florals blended with masc vetiver and leather with a hint of spice.

Taash

Aeronwen: Fig, dark myrrh, amber, redwood, nutmeg, tarragon, black musk, and sweet orange.

(I couldn't find a good melon scent dammit) I think Taash would smell darkly sweet with a hint of spice.

Bonus: scents for my Rook, Spite, Viago, and Teia.

Wren de Riva

These are the scents that I actually imagine my Rook would wear.

Bright Red Dildo: Red leather and honey.

Womb Furie: Snake Oil (aged patchouli and vanilla with musks and spices) and three types of honey.

Wren smells of honey and leather to Spite. Lucanis's more discerning nose picks up the earthy patchouli and spices along with the sweet honey and leather.

Spite

Psychodynamic Discharge: Repressed rage, terror, and subjugated sexuality erupting through fierce bursts of uncontrollable psychic phenomena: black leather and red musk with aged black patchouli, Chinese rose, black pepper, coconut meat, Haitian vetiver, and igneous red ginger.

How could I not pick this one for Spite?

Teia

The Night-Raven: Indigo musk, wild plum, rose geranium, benzoin, night-blooming jasmine, and patchouli.

Teia's scent is sexy even when she's not trying to be seductive.

Viago

Snake Skin: For he seemed to me again like a king,

Like a king in exile, uncrowned in the underworld,

Now due to be crowned again.

A sinuous leather variant of BPALs Snake Oil.
