My dumbass thought all your posts having to do with simon were about love simon and I was so confused
Oh, gosh, no. Please do not get the sweet boy from LOVE SIMON confused with the Simon Lauchlan, aka Runner 3, from the Zombies Run Game. One is a nice boy, the other is a gun runner, a traitor, and still one of the people I trust most in the game.
The thing is, Simon is a back-stabbing, self-serving bastard. But you can trust that about him. You know he’ll always be a selfish, self-serving, back-stabbing bastard. And that he values loyalty in a weird way. You know where you are with Simon, even if it is in deep trouble in the middle of the zombie apocalypse.
He’s not really a protagonist, and not always an antagonist, but he’s always Simon. He’s complex, well-written, and still one of my favorite Zombie Run characters.
I admit, this means I have very questionable taste in friends. By all accounts, Simon is the kind of guy I should avoid. But, you know, I’ve got a soft spot for people who aren’t good by inclination. It’s easy to be a saint when you love everyone, are naturally self-less, and abhor violence. It’s easy to be a good person when you see the world through rose-colored glasses and only notice the good in people.
It’s a lot harder to be a good person when you’re the living embodiment of rage and fury trapped in a human body, angry with the universe for getting it wrong, and can see every flaw. When you’ve been hurt, and you know how to hurt others… it’s a lot harder to overcome that. It’s hard to use your words when you know how well fists can solve your problems. Not everyone is naturally a good, caring, loving, person.
I have a lot of respect for the people who rein in their tempers and instincts and are good people despite being mean, selfish, greedy bastards by default. When your first instinct is to tear someone down because they aren’t doing what you want, but you manage to come back handle it well, to stay calm and find a solution — that’s hard. And it’s worth recognition and respect.
Simon is that kind of person. He isn’t a good person, but sometimes he does the right thing because he knows it needs to be done. He’s selfish and greedy by nature, but he supports Runner 5 because he knows Runner 5 can do some good.
Maybe I’ll change my mind. I’m mid-way through Season 3 of the game. But, right now, I just want to take Simon back to Abel and tell him it’s going to be okay. We can’t all be born good people. That’s okay. There’s a place in the world for those of us who are doing our best, whatever that means. Trying is enough.

Runner 5 @ ECCC2018
Getting ready to hit Emerald City Comic Con as Runner 5 from Zombie Run Game.
I’ve wanted to cosplay Runner 5 for years, and this is my first con. This is also the year I was told by the doctor I’ll probably never run again. My Ehlers-Danlos and joint damage has progressed to the point where high-impact sports (like ... anything with running) are not in my future.
I’ll be at the con Thursday, Friday, and Saturday ... I’ll be in Runner 5 costume one day for sure, not sure which yet. If you follow my Twitter (@LianaBrooks) I’ll have updates there.
Thursday and Saturday I have panels and I’ll be signing. The plethora of pens will be with me so I can sign books, fan stuff, shirts, or whathaveyou (let’s keep it PG-13 please).
