Isaac had never been one to be very affectionate, he was a very busy man with work and such. It would often only range from small hugs before he left for work to spooning while you both slept, it was never more than that. This however, it made you feel a little insecure, making your mental health slightly decrease.
You were alone at home, the house was empty. Isaac was working late and your thoughts were bearing down on you, chomping away at you. You were tired, your eye bags showing the extent of worry and stress you felt.
Your mental health had just been plumeting lately with thoughts of how Isaac may leave you. He knew you were often worried and over thought this. Due to your last and past relationships, he always tried to put things right between the two of you, never wanting you to feel left out or alone at all. He was there for you and wanted you to feel loved despite him not showing it very often.
You sighed, the sunset turning into a watercoloured scene, the colours blurred nicely into each other. Yet it felt so lonely. Your hands slowly slid up to your face and hid it, you then felt the warmth of tears burning your palms.
The scene was emotional to anyone who saw it while peering up at the window at you. The apartment was large and had large windows, allowing anyone outside to look up inside. You sighed and looked at your phone, Isaac hadn't messaged yet.
You stood up and wiped away your tears while you crouched and got a start on dinner. It would probably go cold before Isaac got back again. Yet.. you would still cook, the food hot in the pan while you made a simple recipe.
You didn't know if Isaac would even be coming home tonight. The thoughts were making you spiral and you soon became emotional, tears forming again as you cried. Your body slumped to the floor, spoon in hand and your arms still half folded on the counter. You looked so done.
You hadn't even noticed Isaac had walked through the door due to this. As soon as he saw you, his eyes widened and he quickly put down his things and came over. His hand pat your shoulder and he crouched to your level, his hands sliding to your face as he looked at you.
"Oh love.."
He sighed in a soft way, his large hands held your cheeks either side of your face, tracing your scars and such as you cried, your hands angrily and uncontrollably trying to push him away but he didn't care and pulled you in for a hug, he knew you needed it, as soon as he felt your body melt against his.
"I've got you.. I've got you shh shh shh.. Let me take care of you"
You had never felt him be so touchy, it made you almost calm immediately. Hands calmly touched you and lifted your body into his large, muscled arms. He sat down on the sofa and grabbed a blanket, wrapping you up and cuddling you. You let him do whatever he pleased at this point, you craved this comfort.
"Such a good pet for me. There you go, calm.."
He smiled softly and kissed your head, letting you rest in his lap. The rain outside gently hit the windows and added to the comfort, the tv quietly playing an animal documentary that both you and Isaac watched. His hands played with your hair while you came down from your meltdown, soft hair stayed in between his fingers as you both fell asleep.
The image of you both passed out and exhausted on the sofa would never not be cute or funny. Your face was red and teary, yet hidden in Isaacs chest your breath warm. Isaac meanwhile was holding your waist with one hand and one on the back of your head. Neither of you heard his phone ringing later that night. You both deserved this break and Isaac finally having time to touch you (he was most definitely ignoring the call)
Maybe you are made to be loved, you deserve this after everything.

It was already five minutes before you needed to be out the door. You hurriedly gathered your things, while Isaac waited impatiently in the car. You were on your way to an important meeting, and Isaac was your designated driver. The client had specifically requested to meet with you alone, and naturally, you respected their wishes.
The client’s request didn’t bother you at all, but you couldn’t say the same for Isaac. The meeting had been scheduled two weeks in advance, and Isaac had been dreading it ever since. You initially thought he was joking—after all, why would he be so anxious about a meeting when all he had to do was wait in the car?
“Okay, let’s go.” You jumped in the passenger seat holding what looked like a stack of information.
“That much paperwork? You sure you need all that?” Isaac asked, glancing at the pile.
He had no idea just how much there was to unpack. This case was complex, and naturally, it came with a mountain of papers and files.
You rolled your eyes at him, “Just drive, Batman.”
“You know,” He started up the car and put his hands on the wheel, “you have a lot of attitude for someone nicknamed after a pickled cucumber.”
He shot you a teasing look, clearly waiting for your reaction, before bursting into laughter.
You couldn’t help but smile at his antics, though you were eager to get going. The drive to the client's office was quiet except for Isaac’s occasional mutterings about how much he dreaded this meeting. When you finally pulled up to the building, Isaac’s demeanor shifted. His playful banter turned into a serious tone.
“Alright, here we are,” Isaac said, parking the car. “But before you go in, I need to say something.”
You looked at him, puzzled. “What’s up?”
Isaac’s expression changed to something more solemn. “I– Are you sure about going in alone?”
You frowned. “Isaac, we’ve been through this. The client specifically asked for me. It’s part of the job.”
“I get that,” Isaac said, “but I just have a bad feeling about this. Maybe I should come with you, or at least wait in the lobby.”
You sighed, knowing it wouldn’t be easy to change his mind. “Isaac, I appreciate your concern, but you know I can handle this. I’ll be fine. I just need you to trust me.”
You put your hand on his in an attempt to reassure him at least a little.
Isaac looked at you, clearly torn. After a moment, he nodded reluctantly. “Alright, but if anything happens, I’m right here. Just call me if you need anything.”
You gave him a reassuring smile, took your hand off his and stepped out of the car, adjusting your papers. As you walked toward the building, you heard Isaac's door creak open behind you. Glancing back, you saw him stepping out of the car, his expression one of determined anxiety.
“Isaac, what are you doing?” you called out, hurrying back to him. “I thought you were going to stay in the car.”
“I know, but I can’t just sit here and do nothing. I’ve got a bad feeling, and I’m not just going to wait around without checking things out,” he said, his tone firm.
“Isaac, seriously, go back to the car,” you said, trying to keep your voice calm. “It’s just a meeting. I’ve got this.”
By the time the client arrived, Isaac was sort of lurking in the background, creepily observing you two. It amused you a little but you tried not to bring attention to his weird antics.
Meeting your client was awkward knowing Isaac was staring directly at you from afar but you got it done. The client, a middle-aged man with a stern demeanor, greeted you with a polite but guarded smile. You exchanged pleasantries and led him into the conference room. Isaac, meanwhile, took up a position just outside the door, his gaze fixed on you with an intensity that bordered on obsessive.
After your meeting, you met up with Isaac again.
“How’d it go?”
You glared at him, flashing a sarcastic smile his way. “It was fine! Until he noticed you still staring at us.”
Isaac looked sheepish but relieved. “I’m sorry. I just couldn’t shake that bad feeling. I guess I was being a bit overprotective.”
“It’s okay, cutie, let’s go to the car.”
“Don’t call me that,” He pulled the key to his car out of his pocket, “in public.”

“Isaac, did you put sunscreen on?” You turn to what looks like a confused man who has never been outside before. Despite his understanding of the outside world, he struggled in outdoor settings.
“Why is it so hot?” He rummaged through the bag of beach stuff you packed, drawing a water bottle.
“Oh my– Isaac put sunscreen on, you’ll burn.”
He moved awkwardly, like a fish out of water, searching for the sunscreen, completely ignoring the hand that offered it to him. You knew Isaac was weird outside, especially when it was humid, but this was so difficult to watch.
“I’m holding it. Honey, you act like you’ve never been outside before.” You got up from the blanket where you were lying on and helped him apply sunscreen.
“I’m sorry, Pickle. I just cannot stand this hot weather; it makes thinking so hard.” He leaned into your hands as you glided the sunscreen onto his back.
A part of you was very amused and in the mood to tease him but another part of you adored him like this. It made you feel warm inside knowing he felt safe enough to let you take care of him like this. He didn’t always need to have it all together.
“You know what would help you cool down?” You asked softly.
“Hm?”
“Getting in the water.”
It’s no secret that Isaac loves swimming, though, to this day, you still have no clue why. However, swimming in a pool on your property is extremely different from being publicly in the ocean. You knew he was more hesitant given these circumstances but it was worth a try. You didn’t want him burning his skin off.
“If I go in, you go in too.” His hand crept toward yours, fingers intertwining.
“Of course, Isaac.”
The two of you walked closer and closer to the tide, feeling the temperature shift while the ocean's gentle waves washed over your feet. Though, Isaac didn’t feel the same way about the water’s embrace.
Your head quickly turned at the sound of a screech.
“It’s so cold!”
“Ah– it’s water, honey.”
You couldn’t help but laugh at him. His genteel demeanor easily washed away with the waves.
“Here,” Your hand slithered in the space between his arm and waist, holding onto him.
“You don’t have to hold onto me, I’ll be fine.”’
“Not if you’re screaming bloody murder at the beach.”
Isaac rolled his eyes, but there was a hint of a smile tugging at his lips. “Alright, alright. Just... stay close?”
“Always,” you replied softly, squeezing his hand as you both ventured further into the welcoming embrace of the ocean.
Now it felt like your roles have been reversed. Now, you were his guide and you found it endearing how he allowed you to take care of him the same way he takes care of you at home. As you stood together, the waves lapping gently at your feet, you couldn't help but marvel at how your love for each other flowed as effortlessly as the ocean before you. With a smile, you knew that in each other's care, there was a quiet strength.
“Wait until the waves start knocking you over.”
“Pickle.”

“Look at you, my Earis.”
You smiled at the compliment, knowing you looked ethereal. Even though it wasn’t the reason you were there, you still enjoyed picking out nice outfits. Give the people something to look at. People around you were stunned by your entrance, though, they weren’t the only ones.
Giggling, you take your elegant steps forward to your rival. He looked astonished by you. That wasn’t new though. Zaros tends to give you your credit where it’s due, especially regarding your appearance. He may be bitter but never dishonest.
“My Earis.” He takes a bow.
“My Zaros.” You tease.
He smiles at your comment, looking you up and down. Zaros tends to try to make you nervous. It only works sometimes.
“I must say, you look otherworldly.”
You smile at his compliment. His compliments usually felt better than others because even though you two weren’t on the best of terms, you knew he meant his words. However, you weren’t like that. Not at all. Sometimes, you’d make it obvious that you were lying but sometimes you’d do whatever you could to sound truthful.
“You look…” You started, “Okay.”
Zaros scoffed. He knew how you were whether it was teasing or genuinely being dishonest, he knew. And he couldn’t help but appreciate it a little.
“Shall we?” He reached out his hand, waiting for you to take it.
“I suppose we shall.”
This was a last-minute event. Everyone had been gathered together and invited to hear a speech from the two of you. It wasn’t originally in the plan but of course, Zaros suggested it. You were excited to speak your truth and to hear what Zaros had to say. However, at this point of the trials, you were less focused on winning. If anything, this had been teaching you something that extended beyond the throne.
The trial before this was a dance. It was just a way to show off how well you could follow choreography and that you did. Although, that day brought you and Zaros closer to one another. In one of the portions, you didn’t dance with him but rather you brought other people who were watching into the dance and encouraged them to join in. It was truly beautiful. Zaros had even told you how much you’ve matured through the trials.
However, rather than living in the past, you focused on the future. You smiled at the familiar faces of the people you danced with. You waved at people you used to ignore. It seemed you were becoming a new person that even the commoners could see themselves in.
“And now, please welcome The Earis.”
You smiled at the introduction and stepped up. As you looked around, people seemed to be more excited about your appearance. They seemed like they wanted you there because they liked you. Not just because you belong here.
As your speech went on, people would nod, smile, and cheer a little. It was like they already decided. A few times during your speech, you would glance at Zaros and instead of having an unfriendly glare, you would have a spark in your eyes that showed just how happy you truly were.
It was like a scene from a movie as you talked about the things you’d like to improve, change, and keep. You felt like this was the most authentic you’ve vocally been with the people of Serulla. Of course, it couldn’t go on forever. You closed off your speech in a very sweet manner and left it at that.
The people were given a few minutes of intermission to truly think about what you said and to let it sink in before the next speech. You were excited to hear what Zaros had to say.
“And for our next speech,” The next introduction started.
You felt your heart beating. You were nervous but you were also looking forward to this.
“Hello, everyone. As you may know, my name is Zaros Atha’lin and I am competing with the Earis for rulership of Serulla. I have many things I would love to discuss but first, I’d like to draw some attention to you, my Earis.” He turns to you and smiles.
However, it wasn’t the same smile you gave him. It wasn’t full of the same light and hint of love. No, it was dull and cynical.
“I have seen the way you changed over time. I think everyone has seen it and is just as astonished as am I. However, it’s not that simple. My Earis, you still have so much to work on. Your smile cannot erase the years you spent lying about others. Your dancing cannot take back the harsh, cruel words you’ve muttered to people who love you. Your truths do not take away from your many lies.”
You looked around, staggered by the words coming from his mouth. You thought that the two of you had been getting along. You thought there was a genuine friendship rebuilding itself.
“My Earis,” He initiates, “You look at me with endearment in your eyes yet you used to use those same eyes to look down on me. You smile at me with the same mouth you used to call me ‘Leech’. The people of Serulla do not know you. I know you. I know that deep down, you are bitter, savage, brutal, and heartless.”
Tearing up, you take another look around. This time, the audience looks more baffled than they did before. You felt that all this time you spent working on yourself had been for nothing. It didn’t matter how different your views were now. It didn’t matter if you were deemed the new ruler of Serulla because this would always follow you. It didn’t matter how much you’ve grown, you will always be an ungrateful brat.
“You cannot change my mind and I will not let you change the minds of the people. They deserve to know the real you. The real, nasty, selfish, and spiteful you. At the end of the day, you will always be that to me and I will always be a so-called Leech to you.”
You couldn’t take the whispers and the stares as Zaros continued his speech. It was too much to take in. You never would’ve thought he would use this to bash you and humiliate you in front of everyone.
But now, it all made sense. He did suggest this.
“Leech.” You said under your breath before storming out.

Your body curled into a ball of regret, yearning to drown in the depths of your feelings until they vanished. It pained you how easily emotions overwhelmed you, particularly for someone of your kind. It wasn’t even a serious matter, yet your eyes refused to dry.
The thought of Asirel knowing you were like this panicked you even more. Even though your relationship has improved and you’ve gotten to know each other a bit, you still hesitate to be completely vulnerable around him.
Yet, there were moments of levity between you two, like today. Playfully bickering, with no real ill will, was a delightful back-and-forth that even Asirel seemed to enjoy.
But then, in an instant, your arm swung and knocked over... whatever it was. Your heart sank as Asirel muttered a curse under his breath. You dreaded his disappointment, especially over something so trivial.
The thought of him getting upset at you made it hard to breathe. It wouldn’t take long before you ran off, drawing tears.
That’s how you got here, sobbing and trembling. It was unusual, even if you were sensitive, it never hit you this hard. But, you feared Asirel at this moment like you’ve feared Ivan. You could hear Asirel watching you from afar, inching closer. The guilt in his breathing made it easy to hear, especially with your ears’ sensitivity.
“What do you need?” You attempted to address him, avoiding his gaze.
“Why are you crying, Pet?” His tone sounds more confused than anything. He didn’t sound very annoyed or upset, just confused.
A part of you couldn't comprehend it either. The tears continued to flow unabated, your emotions raw and uncontrolled.
Asirel hesitated before taking a tentative step closer, his concern noticeable in the air. “Did I... did I upset you?” he asked softly, his voice tinged with worry and a touch of irritation
You shook your head, finally meeting his gaze, though your vision blurred with tears. “No, it’s not you,” you managed to choke out between sobs. “I... I just...” Words failed you as you struggled to articulate the tumult of emotions crashing inside you.
He moved closer still, kneeling beside you with a gentle hand on your shoulder. “Tell me, Pet. Let me help.”
Your breathing hitched as you tried to compose yourself, “It’s... it’s stupid. I knocked over that thing and I... I’m just so sorry, Asirel. I didn’t mean to... I didn’t want you to be mad at me.”
Asirel's expression softened, understanding dawning in his eyes. He sighed softly, a mixture of relief and mild exasperation. “Hey,” he murmured, brushing a tear from your cheek with his thumb. “It’s alright. It was just an accident. I’m not mad.”
The sincerity in his voice eased some of the tension coiled tightly in your chest. You leaned into his touch, grateful for his reassurance. “I’m sorry,” you whispered again, feeling the weight of your emotions slowly begin to lift.
Asirel pulled you closer, wrapping his arms around you in a comforting embrace. “You don’t need to run away from me like you ran away from him.”
Because Asirel is not him.

"Does this hurt you?"
You wrapped Dontis’ hands and arms with a bandage. They were covered in scars and heartbreakingly deep cuts. You knew he was strong enough to handle the pain but it still upset you seeing him like this. At least he came back in one piece though, right? Still, you wished he’d be more careful.
"No."
"Why didn't you take me with you?"
“You need a break from the hunting and the fighting. Why would I take you? Even then, my life was on the line and I would never put yours at the same risk.”
He was awfully serious today. Like, less bubbly and gentle. You could tell why, he was injured in every place imaginable and he just came back from defending himself and other people. No matter how long someone’s been alive, that’s something that’ll forever shake them. Nonetheless, you wished he lightened up a bit. It was usually you that’d be the pessimistic one. Not that he was being negative, just, less positive.
“Maybe if I was there, this wouldn’t happen.”
“Yeah, to me. It’d happen to you and then I’d be here caressing your hands, flirting with you, and making you feel bad.”
“I am not flirting with you, Dontis. I’m trying to help you.”
“Lying won’t get you anywhere, dear.”
You rolled your eyes at his remark. All you wanted was for him to be safe and healthy and you wished more than anything that you were there. You knew he could handle himself. He’s not incompetent but you just have that instinct for your dear incubus.
“And… Done! Can you move your arm well enough?”
“Ah, yeah. Thank you.”
He adjusted himself onto the bed and laid back. He seemed more tense than usual. You narrowed it down to him just being in a lot of pain. It made sense, he came to you with his arms practically painted with blood. Those cuts were deep too.
“Are you going to keep staring or will you join me?” He smiled at you.
“I mean, do you want me to?”
“It would make me feel better.”
He opened his arms out for you as you adjusted yourself. Dontis loved doing that, holding you. He loved to have you in his arms, on his chest, and breathing at the same pace as him. You loved it just as much. Though, you’d never admit it and you’d never ask to cuddle.
When he finally had you, he wrapped his arm around your back, having your chest face his. His grip was more secure than usual.
“Dontis?”
“Hm?”
“Are you okay?”
“Ah,” He cleared his throat, “Yeah? Why? Do I seem off? I’m sorry if I do.”
That. Right there. Not that Dontis was impolite, because he wasn’t, but he was unapologetically himself. That’s who he is and has been since you’ve met him. But right now, he’s apologizing for… acting strange?
“Dontis. You can talk to me. Actually, no. Please talk to me.”
He used his free hand to hold one of yours, playing with your fingers.
“I suppose I’ve just been thinking a lot. I’m a survivor of something huge and I made it out with my friend and his love. I should feel accomplished and I do.”
“But?”
“But I can’t. I can’t dwell on this. I have a purpose, to comfort. It seems my kind only live to serve their purpose. I don’t want to though. I want to live my life and with people, I love without only serving my purpose. I do love comforting people but if I could just have a domestic life with you and settle…”
“Why can’t you?”
“It’s not in my blood. I’m not even supposed to think about it. You shouldn’t be the one listening to me anyway. Just… act like I didn’t say anything.”
You unraveled your intertwined fingers and held his hand by the palm. Caressing your hand, Dontis hummed, knowing you would put him in check.
“Dontis. Don’t do that.”
“Do what?”
“Act like it’s okay, don’t.”
“You’re not supposed to be my therapist, that’s my job.”
He tried to pull his hand away from yours. It didn’t work. You wouldn’t let him push this aside. You wanted him to know that you were there for him no matter what.
“I don’t care what your job is, Dontis. It doesn’t matter. I’m here for you no matter what. Yeah, your kind have things you’re ‘meant to do’ but Dontis, you’re so much more than that. You’re more than what you were born as, okay?”
“Thank you. You know, you’re kind of good at this. Maybe you’ve learned some things from yours truly.” He teased.
It was nice to see him being playful again and embracing his personality. He knew he wasn’t alone in this as long as you were here and that’s all you wanted.
“I love you, okay?”
“I know, dear hunter, I love you too.”
