ZU-UK's performance/experience
I had expressed an interest in learning about immersive theatre to Jorge and he sent me a message saying his and Persis’s company ZU-UK was putting on two shows The Blind Dinner Date and Goodnight, Sleep Tight at Theatre Royal Stratford East - I thought the two shows would be in the theatre but it turned out to be in the bar with one half sectioned off for us.
The Blind Dinner Date
We - two of us - sat down with earplugs in and a microphone in the middle of the round table. The waiter came over, asked us questions, and we played predesigned games that opened up all the possibilities that could happen if this initial meeting turned into a relationship. This was the blind date.
The pace of the games made it impossible not to engage and then suddenly the focus of the performance/experience shifted away from you and your date to the waiter (who perfectly balanced discomfort/melancholia with hope/possibility) in his exploration with a random person from the street about the last words his past lover said to him, ‘What is the worst that could happen?’
Goodnight, Sleep Tight
A woman who was dressed in white took me from the breakout area to a bed. She took off my shoes and, over my clothes, placed pyjamas on me. (I felt overly nervous as I’m not one for too much human contact.) She gently helped me into bed and was given a teddy bear to hold. It was like being a child with the nervousness of adulthood entering into that forgotten world. She put a VR headset onto my head which started to play …
… blurring the idea of memory, dream and parental love as slight massage touches facilitated the journey into the world - like a parent’s touch. The world as a place of pain but also possibility - to grow into and through possibility. As we did as children. It was an emotional journey that attempted to act as an initiation - to begin and to begin again.

Heavy, awkward and (often) unflattering, walking shoes are one of the most annoying things to pack when you’re heading out of town. If you’re like me, I usually tie a pair of runners onto the outside of my carry-on bag which tends to induce eyerolls from the security scanners and glares from fellow passengers as they heedlessly swing side-to-side behind me. Often, I don’t even end up wearing them because they feel so clunky and well, everyone likes to look good in their photos, so I end up being ‘that girl’ hiking along a rocky trail in a pair of rubber flip flops. It happens.
Perhaps answering the call of our New Year’s resolution to stay fit (and be more practical) while travelling, the Zuuk, a new innovation from Hi-Tec recently crossed our desks.
