“Adam, I’d love to let you talk more about space, so I would hate to interrupt you.” Will hadn’t even looked up from his notebook; his pencil tapping lightly against the spiral. “I need to focus on studying right now. Do you mind helping? We can talk more about space over dinner.”

Will was expecting anyone but Adam to pull him from the apparent stranger. At just his brother’s touch, though, the rage that had boiled over seemed to dissipate. His gaze, however, remained on the man, focused; he was worried that he’d stand back up and fight more.

“...Adam, the people I met in my line of work aren’t always good people. Sometimes... Sometimes they try to get me before I get them.” A tired puff of air fell from his lips. “...He thought you were me, Adam. He was going to try to... I was trying to protect you.”

❝ You really shouldn't, ❞ Nigel sighs, smiling fondly at the naive little creature before him. ❝ I'm bad news, darling. Getting mixed up with me would only get you into trouble. ❞ FUCK but Nigel loves him. Loves him enough to warn him away, to protect him from getting entangled in the flaming mess that is Nigel's life, to keep him from growing to hate Nigel eventually as Gabi had. Nigel didn't think he could bear it if Adam were ever to look at him with the same loathing his former wife had at the end of their relationship.

Nigel had never been so scared in his life.  He’d thought the part of his life that involved guns and adrenaline and blood was over  --  Left behind in Romania.  He’d stayed, since coming to California, on the mostly-straight and relatively-narrow.  He’d wanted to start over.  And, then, he’d wanted to be better.  For Adam, for his starlight.

But, somehow, a piece of his past had caught up to him.  Worse than that, it had actually HARMED ADAM.  And for that, no matter what happened, Nigel was never going to forgive himself.

Nigel, I’m scared, Adam whimpers, and whatever shriveled pieces of Nigel’s heart that the little spaceman has managed to glue back together shatter anew.

❝ That’s okay, sweetheart, ❞  Nigel chokes out, gathering Adam up into his arms, cradling him against his chest like a baby.  ❝ You’re allowed to be scared.  But you can’t go to sleep, okay ? ❞   With one hand, he wipes the tears from his boyfriend’s precious, beloved face, feeling utterly useless.  ❝ The ambulance is on its way, you just have to hold on until then.  I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.  Just look at me, darling, stay with me. ❞
