For Autistic People Who Don’t Like Brushing Their Teeth
Whether it be due to the taste of the toothpaste, the sensation of the bristles, or anything else, I’ve found lots of autistics either really love or *really* hate brushing their teeth. So I thought I’d compile a little list of things I think are helpful! I used to hate brushing my teeth, until I tried a *special* toothbrush, so I could have positive associations with it. You see, one of my long time special interests is My Little Pony (especially FiM, but also G3). So I got this!
It is a My Little Pony toothbrush! It also provides sensory stimulation and routine with the Ready, Set, Go feature; it has slow flashing lights to indicate when to brush, when you are almost done, and when you are done. The bristles are fun colors, and colorful things also make me happy. Once I am done with it, I can stick it up on the mirror with the suction cup at the bottom!
But it still wasn’t enough. I was hurting my wrist, and I need to buy a new toothbrush anyways. So next I think I am going to try this.
It is electric, which inputs sensory stimulation and puts less strain on my wrist and arm, and it has my other big special interest, Sonic the Hedgehog!
You can also accompany either of these, or often other media related dental care products, with their corresponding toothpaste!
If these aren’t your style, or an electric toothbrush is too strong but you still want some sensory input, I recommend the Z-Vibe Toothbrush from ARK Therapeutic.
Though it is not particularly as effective as a normal toothbrush, and it also is much more costly, I have heard nothing but good things about the Z-Vibe Grabber. It can also just be used for oral stimulation without toothpaste! If you get other tips for the Z-Vibe, such as a spoon, pencil, weighted pen, etcetera, it can be multi-use!
I hope this was helpful, feel free to add on your own Sensory Tooth Brushing Tips!
