The African jacana (Actophilornis africanus) is a wader bird identifiable by its large feet, used to walk on floating vegetation in its preferred habitat.
The jacana has evolved a highly unusually polyandrous mating system, meaning that one female mates with multiple males and the male alone cares for the chicks. Males will often tuck chicks up beneath their wings to carry them away from danger.
