I have been experimenting with digital collage on photosop. In order to create this collage I restricted myself to 4 colours; teal, grey a lighter blue, lilac and pink. These images are of fish scales, and tree bark. I chose them because they are striking and unusual and wanted to experiment with different textures for the clothes.

Couture AW 2014: VALENTINO

As the couture collections of 2014 grace the catwalks & our smart phones some wow some scare and some mesmerise. For another year one designer reminds me why I love fashion by displaying dresses of elegant excellence which takes you as far as possible away from the tacky windows of another on the way out highstreet trend repeat. This designer is of course Valentino Garavani. Let's take a look at a couple of my favourite pieces from the collection...

What I always love  about Valentino's collection is the strong sense of self emitted within it. He continues to design for his own prerogative. Valentino's collection takes me back in time with its soft sheer draped textures that resemble dresses for Goddesses and the most glamorous of female fashionista Romans. Valentino's collection is a beautiful example of escapism from the mundane that fashion can provide guiding your brain to another time or place. Team the dresses with striking sandals and here I am sat eating grapes inside my own personal colosseum which just happens to have great wifi!! Love it!!

This is my latest project. I have been experimenting with angles trying to see how i can create empty space & cut out parts of the garment whilst still keeping a well tailored finish. This garment still needs alot more work. I want to keep the back piece relatively simple and then attach a long floor length slightly A-line skirt.

In the fashion industry the idea of what is beautiful is very narrow and specific. Tall skinny blondes parade the catwalks all over the world reinforcing allegedly what being beautiful is. In Britain, more than 11million people live with a disability. But in the past six years, there has been only one physically disabled model in a high-fashion campaign, by Alexander McQueen in 1999. And only five campaigns in mainstream fashion campaigns worldwide: Principles/Debenhams in 2010, DiDi in the Netherlands and Belgium in 2011, Adidas and Marks & Spencer in 2012, and Debenhams in 2013. Some people believe you are not beautiful just because you are disabled. We need to break down the barriers and widen the meaning of beautiful. Beauty is being unique, its being confident in yourself whoever you are its not about being a clone of an idea of following everyone else. We need to inspire young boys and girls growing up now and tell them they can be beautiful no matter who they are. Luckily some individuals are already starting to break down these barriers, Kelly Knox 28 from London was born without a left hand. When she was born the doctors had no explanantion for this other then that it was more common for boys then girls. However she has not let this different ability affect her confidence or her modelling career infact she has embraced it.Knox’s modelling career began when she won TV show Britain’s Missing Top Model in 2008. Her prize comprised a fashion shoot in Marie Claire and she was shot by world-famous photographer Rankin.Knox has appeared on Gok Wan’s How To Look Good Naked, opened Pakistan Fashion Week, appeared on billboards in Oslo, starred as a zombie in a Samsung internet advert and, most recently, walked the catwalk for the P&G Beauty Trends 2013 fashion show in January this year.She’s also appearing in a Channel 4 show due to air in October but she’s sworn to secrecy about that. What this proves is people can be accepting of diversity within fashion. A good model should not be defined by their size, skin colour or physical ability.

We like to think that racism was left in the sat and no longer exists in our modern society. However, sadly its still occurring in society in particular I am talking about its occurrence within the fashion industry. Black models are still being discriminated against simply because of their skin. Up and coming model Anais Mali says how agencies would tell her she was not wanted, "This is Paris -- black girls don’t work here,". She explains  "France is very racist, you don’t see a lot of powerful black people in France—it’s starting but it’s slow-moving". It seems like the industry is trying to focus more on diversity, but there is still a long way to go. For example Anais explains how in Milan you do not really see black girls on the runway, "you hear things like, 'we already have Jourdan [Dunn], one black girl is enough." Jordan Dunn is a black model who was discovered in Primark at age 16 and her career has grown ever since. She was featured as one of the 4 cover models for Vogue Italia's iconic Black Models issue, July 2008. She has walked the runways for nearly every top designer and made history as the first black model since Naomi to strut for Prada, however this should make it easier for other black models to follow in her footsteps and not be used as justification that the industry is not racist! its not about having acceptable statistics of diversity to show, its about uniting society and celebrating all of its diverse individuals.

This is the final image for the last project of the year. The brief was to make a wedding dress.The inspiration for mine was "a wanderlust wedding". It tells the story of Millie my customer who has been travelling for the last five years and has finally returned to England to marry her fiance and therefore wanted a dress that represents her travel.
