Infantry Officer’s Sword (Pattern 1796)

Dated: 1796

Maker:  Rundell & Bridge (London firm of jewellers and goldsmiths formed by Philip Rundell and John Bridge)

This is a presentation sword given to Lieutenant Colonel Richard Lloyd, commander of the Goree Island Garrison, from his officers, in 1808. The silver and brass gilt hilt has a knucklebow and shell guard and bears a crest, possibly of the Williamson family and may originate from a marriage between one Usher Philpott Williamson and Anne Lloyd, their son being Major-General Usher Williamson of the 22nd Regiment of Foot. 

Side notes:

Lieutenant-Colonel Richard Lloyd commanded the Goree Island Garrison, situated off Senegal, until 1808. His force helped protect British trade routes.

Slaves were shipped to America from Goree until the abolition of that trade in 1807.

After leaving Goree, Lloyd became commander of 2nd Battalion, The 84th (York and Lancaster) Regiment of Foot, and was killed at the Battle of Nivelle in France on 10 December 1813.

Katana Sword

Dated: 19th century

Culture: Japanese

Medium: steel, bone

Measurements: overall length 80.5 cm; blade length 54.5 cm

Te blade features a pattern (hamon) with a not clearly visible ‘hada’, plus a brass habaki (a wedge shaped metal collar used to keep the sword from falling out of the saya and to support the fittings below). The bone grip and saya are finely carved and engraved with figures and floral motifs.

Cutlass or hanger based on multiple original examples from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Made by E. B. Erickson for Nathan Robinson. The blade is just over 26 inches long and the entire sword weights 35 ounces. Such a weapon would have been a very convenient and versatile sidearm for any sailor, hunter or soldier of the period.

The Guardian sword is a great katana with an effective cutting edge. The sword is very robust and made from through-hardened 1060 steel. It features a traditional high shinogi-ji which is slanted at an inwards angle. This katana has a heavy curvature that flows into a gentle kissaki shape. The collar and handle-cap are in Higo style, and the hand-guard is made in the sukashi-style from cast bronze. Maker: Johan Friedrich Raab (active in Germany)

Culture: German & British

Medium and techniques: wood, ray skin, silver, foil, leather, gilt, blued steel/burnished, etched

Measurements: overall length 106.87 cm; blade length 88.13 cm

Provenance: acquired from Bland, the sword-cutler

The sword features a burnished steel hilt with a faceted pommel and a spiral wooden grip covered with white rayskin and bound with silver foil. The one-edged blade has two fullers, gilt panel at hilt etched with strapwork and a shell motif, also with monogram, coronet, military trophy and inscriptions.
