Four Things ECOSTRESS Can See From Space
Our new instrument in space, the Ecosystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS), is designed to study how plants respond to heat and water stress by measuring the temperature of Earthās vegetation, but thatās not all it will do. Adding ECOSTRESS to the Space Station will also add to our understanding of volcanoes, fires, urban heat and coastal and inland waters.
1. Fires
ECOSTRESSās radiometer can detect all kinds of fires, but it may be most useful in recording small fires ā new wildfires that are just beginning to grow. These have proven hard to study from satellite observations. ECOSTRESS has a pixel size of only 130 by 230 feet (40 by 70 meters), offering a much sharper view. āWeāll be able to see a bonfire on a beach,ā ECOSTRESS scientist Simon Hook says.

2. Volcanoes
ECOSTRESSās thermal infrared imager will be able to spot new fissures and hotspots that can signal impending volcanic eruptions.
The Chiliques volcano in Chile was thought to be dormant until thermal images revealed new activity. Credit: NASA/METI/AIST/Japan Space Systems and U.S./Japan ASTER Science Team
3. Urban Heat
The heat generated by a large city can compound the health hazards of heat waves, particularly for the oldest and youngest city dwellers. Which neighborhoods suffer from heat the most? With the very detailed images from ECOSTRESS, weāll be able to see which mitigation efforts are keeping neighborhoods cool.
Urban areas can be up to 8 degrees warmer than surrounding suburban or natural landscapes, as seen here in a true-color image of the Atlanta area, top, and temperature data, bottom. Credit: NASA
4. Coastal and Inland Waters
Along coastlines and in large lakes, wind can push surface water aside allowing water from the depths to rise to the surface, bringing nutrients. These upwellings of cold water are important sources of nutrition for the coastal and lake plants and animals. ECOSTRESS can detect these smaller upwellings, providing valuable information for researchers.
Upwelling can be seen in satellite data. Here temperature data (top) and chlorophyll concentrations (bottom) are shown around the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico. Credit: MODISĀ Ocean Color Team/Norman Kuring

Why "doing something relaxingā does not help your anxiety
A lot of the time when people give advice intended to relieve anxiety, they suggest doing ārelaxingā things like drawing, painting, knitting, taking a bubble bath, coloring in one of those zen coloring books, or watching glitter settle to the bottom of a jar.
This advice is always well-intentioned, and Iām not here to diss people who either give it or who benefit from it. But it has never, ever done shit for me, and this is because it goes about resolving anxiety in the completely wrong way. Ā
THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO when suffering from anxiety is to do a ārelaxingā thing that just enables your mind to dwell and obsess more on the thing thatās bothering you. You need to ESCAPE from the dwelling and the obsession in order to experience relief.
You can drive to a quiet farm, drive to the beach, drive to a park, or anywhere else, but as someone who has tried it all many, many times, trust meāitās a waste of gas. You will just end up still sad and stressed, only with sand on your butt.Ā You canāt physically escape your sadness. Your sadness is inside of you. To escape, you need to give your brain something to play with for a while until you can approach the issue with a healthier frame of mind.Ā
People who have anxiety do not need more time to contemplate, because we will use it to contemplate how much we suck.
In fact, you could say thatās what anxiety isāhyper-contemplating. When we let our minds run free, they run straight into the thorn bushes. Our minds are already running, and they need to be controlled. They need to be given something to do, or theyāll destroy everything, just like an overactive husky dog ripping up all the furniture.Ā
Therefore, I present to you:Ā
THINGS YOU SHOULD NOT DO WHEN ANXIOUS
āGo on a walk
āWatch a sunset, watch fish in an aquarium, watch glitter, etc.
āGo anywhere where the main activity is sitting and watching
āDraw, color, do anything that occupies the hands and not the mind
āDo yoga, jog, go fishing, or anything that lets you mentally driftĀ
āDo literally ANYTHING that gives you great amounts of mental space to obsess and dwell on things.
THINGS YOU SHOULD DO WHEN ANXIOUS:
āDo a crossword puzzle, Sudoku, or any other mind teaser game. Crosswords are the best.
āWrite something. It doesnāt have to be a masterpiece. Write the Top 10 Best Restaurants in My City. Rank celebrities according to Best Smile. Write some dumb Legolas fanfiction and rip it up when youāre done. Itās not for publication, itās a relief exercise that only you will see.Ā
āRead something, watch TV, or watch a movieāas long as itās engrossing. Donāt watch anything which you can run as background noise (like, off the top of my head, Say Yes to The Dress.) As weird as it seems, American Horror Story actually helps me a lot, because it sucks me in.Ā
āMasturbate. Yes, Iām serious. Your mind has to concentrate on the mini-movie itās running. It canāt run Sexy Titillating Things and All The Things That are Bothering Me at the same time. (ā¦I hope. If it can, thenā¦ignore this one.)Ā
āDo math problemsāliterally, google āalgebra problems worksheetā and solve them. If you havenāt done math since 7th grade this will really help you. I donāt mean with math, I mean with the anxiety.Ā
āPlay a game or a sport with someone that requires great mental concentration. Working with 5 people to get a ball over a net is a challenge which will require your brain to turn off the Sadness Channel.Ā
āPlay a video game, as long as itās not something like candy crush or Tetris thatās mindless.Ā
THINGS YOU SHOULD DO DURING PANIC ATTACKS ESPECIALLY:
āList the capitals of all the U.S. states
āList the capitals of all the European countries
āList all the shapes you can see. Or all the colors.Ā
āList all the blonde celebrities you can think of.
āPull up a random block of text and count all theĀ As in it, or Es or whatever. Ā
Now obviously, I am not a doctor. I am just an anxious person who has tried almost everything to help myself. Ā Iāve finally realized that the stuff people recommendĀ never worksĀ because this is a disorder that thrives on free time and free mental space. When I do the stuff I listed above, I can breathe again. And I hope it helps someone here too.Ā
(Now this shouldnāt have to be said but if theĀ ādo notsā work for you then by all means do them. Theyāve just never worked for me.)
This wouldāve been great an hour ago
If your anxiety includes rapid heartbeat for no reason then it may help to exercise! It helps for me because Iām focused on whatever moves Iām doing and breathing, and it gives my heart rate a reason to be that high so that I can start the slow cooking down process and (hopefully) bring that heart rate down with it. Look up a quick cardio workout on YouTube or something and just do it in your room!
This is so, SO true.Ā
AllĀ ādoing something relaxingā ever did for me was give my brain MORE free time to FREAK THE FUCK OUT.Ā
I like how this boil down to grabbing something then tell the brains weasels to GO FETCH YOU PIECES OF SHIT
I mean.Ā
Thatās basically it tho.Ā
Yeah⦠One good thing about ADHD, I guess⦠the brain weasels are as distractable as the rest of me :D
Of course, sometimes they also unlock hyperfocus mode, but, eh. Could be worse.
This advice is gold.Ā Ā
Seriously, this is really good advice!I also recommend:
Playing a video game where you have to pay attention to the game play.
Not only is this engaging your brain and keeping it from spiraling, but it can also provide a rewarding sensation and feeling of accomplishment that will release the positive chemicals your brain is lacking that threw you into anxiety mode!
Planning a trip that youād like to take one day, including figuring out destination, travel expenses, accommodations, activities while you are there.Ā
Fantasizing and making future plans not only requires your brain to focus on logistics, keeping it occupied, but also reboots your mindset into a more hopeful/optimistic route. Anxiety creates very circular thought processes, but making plans will redirect those processes into a more growth mindset.
important
Have you ever thought āMan, I feel impossibly shitty and I donāt know whyā?
Run through this checklist before you do anything else.
What have I eaten in the last 24 hours? Is it enough? If not, go and eat some food, you butt.
Am I hydrated? If not, put some fluids in your body, fool.
Have I slept an acceptable amount in the last 24 hours and preceeding few days? If not, do your utmost to have a nap. You need a reset, bro.
Have I been outside/partaken in whatever form of exercise I am capable of? Youāre stagnating, homie.
Have I communicated with anyone? At all? About anything? In the last 24 hours? Sup, youāre not actually a lone wolf, and even if youāre just shouting BUTTLUMPS at someone over the intertubes, itās better than shouting it at yourself inside your own head.
So basically: eat, drink, sleep, walk, and talk. If you still feel like emotional ass after that, start looking for more involved explanations.
This shit is no joke.
All of these are extremely important.
Adding: 6. Have I communicated too much? Am I overstimulated? Do I need some quiet time? Go stare at a blank wall in utter silence for a bit.
I try to go through this kind of checklist whenever I feel funky. It really helps.
10 Things: Mars Helicopter
When our next Mars rover lands on the Red Planet in 2021, it will deliver a groundbreaking technology demonstration: the first helicopter to ever fly on a planetary body other than Earth. This Mars Helicopter will demonstrate the first controlled, powered, sustained flight on another world. It could also pave the way for future missions that guide rovers and gather science data and images at locations previously inaccessible on Mars. This exciting new technology could change the way we explore Mars.
1.Ā Its body is small, but its blades are mighty.
One of the biggest engineering challenges is getting the Mars Helicopterās blades just right. They need to push enough air downward to receive an upward force that allows for thrust and controlled flight ā a big concern on a planet where the atmosphere is only one percent as dense as Earthās. āNo helicopter has flown in those flight conditions ā equivalent to 100,000 feet (30,000 meters) on Earth,ā said Bob Balaram, chief engineer for the project at our Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
2. It has to fly in really thin Martian air.
To compensate for Marsā thin atmosphere, the blades must spin much faster than on an Earth helicopter, and the blade size relative to the weight of the helicopter has to be larger too. The Mars Helicopterās rotors measure 4 feet wide (about 1.2 meters) long, tip to tip. At 2,800 rotations per minute, it will spin about 10 times faster than an Earth helicopter. At the same time, the blades shouldnāt flap around too much, as the helicopterās design team discovered during testing. Their solution: make the blades more rigid. āOur blades are much stiffer than any terrestrial helicopterās would need to be,ā Balaram said. Ā The body, meanwhile, is tiny ā about the size of a softball. In total, the helicopter will weigh just under 4 pounds (1.8 kilograms).
3.Ā It will make up to five flights on Mars.
Over a 30-day period on Mars, the helicopter will attempt up to five flights, each time going farther than the last. The helicopter will fly up to 90 seconds at a time, at heights of up to 10 to 15 feet (3 to 5 meters). Engineers will learn a lot about flying a helicopter on Mars with each flight, since itās never been done before!
4.Ā The Mars Helicopter team has already completed groundbreaking tests.
Because a helicopter has never visited Mars before, the Mars Helicopter team has worked hard to figure out how to predict the helicopterās performance on the Red Planet. āWe had to invent how to do planetary helicopter testing on Earth,ā said Joe Melko, deputy chief engineer of Mars Helicopter, based at JPL.
The team, led by JPL and including members from JPL, AeroVironment Inc.,Ā Ames Research Center, and Langley Research Center, has designed, built and tested a series of test vehicles.
In 2016, the team flew a full-scale prototype test model of the helicopter in the 25-foot (7.6-meter) space simulator at JPL. The chamber simulated the low pressure of the Martian atmosphere. More recently, in 2018, the team built a fully autonomous helicopter designed to operate on Mars, and successfully flew it in the 25-foot chamber in Mars-like atmospheric density.
Engineers have also exercised the rotors of a test helicopter in a cold chamber to simulate the low temperatures of Mars at night. In addition, they have taken design steps to deal with Mars-like radiation conditions. They have also tested the helicopterās landing gear on Mars-like terrain. More tests are coming to see how it performs with Mars-like winds and other conditions.
5.Ā The camera is as good as your cell phone camera.
The helicopterās first priority is successfully flying on Mars, so engineering information takes priority. An added bonus is its camera. The Mars Helicopter has the ability to take color photos with a 13-megapixel camera ā the same type commonly found in smart phones today. Engineers will attempt to take plenty of good pictures.
6. Itās battery-powered, but the battery is rechargeable.
The helicopter requires 360 watts of power for each second it hovers in the Martian atmosphere ā equivalent to the power required by six regular lightbulbs. But it isnāt out of luck when its lithium-ion batteries run dry. A solar array on the helicopter will recharge the batteries, making it a self-sufficient system as long as there is adequate sunlight. Most of the energy will be used to keep the helicopter warm, since nighttime temperatures on Mars plummet to around minus 130 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 90 Celsius). During daytime flights, temperatures may rise to a much warmer minus 13 to minus 58 degrees Fahrenheit to (minus 25 to minus 50 degrees Celsius) ā still chilly by Earth standards. The solar panel makes an average of 3 watts of power continuously during a 12-hour Martian day.
7.Ā The helicopter will be carried to Mars under the belly of the rover.
Somewhere between 60 to 90 Martian days (or sols) after the Mars 2020 rover lands, the helicopter will be deployed from the underside of the rover. Mars Helicopter Delivery System on the rover will rotate the helicopter down from the rover and release it onto the ground. The rover will then drive away to a safe distance.
8. The helicopter will talk to the rover.
The Mars 2020 rover will act as a telecommunication relay, receiving commands from engineers back on Earth and relaying them to the helicopter. The helicopter will then send images and information about its own performance to the rover, which will send them back to Earth. The rover will also take measurements of wind and atmospheric data to help flight controllers on Earth.
9. It has to fly by itself, with some help.
Radio signals take time to travel to Mars ā between four and 21 minutes, depending on where Earth and Mars are in their orbits ā so instantaneous communication with the helicopter will be impossible. That means flight controllers canāt use a joystick to fly it in real time, like a video game. Instead, they need to send commands to the helicopter in advance, and the little flying robot will follow through. Autonomous systems will allow the helicopter to look at the ground, analyze the terrain to look how fast itās moving, and land on its own.
10. It could pave the way for future missions.
A future Mars helicopter could scout points of interest, help scientists and engineers select new locations and plan driving routes for a rover. Larger standalone helicopters could carry science payloads to investigate multiple sites at Mars. Future helicopters could also be used to fly to places on Mars that rovers cannot reach, such as cliffs or walls of craters. They could even assist with human exploration one day. Says Balaram: āSomeday, if we send astronauts, these could be the eyes of the astronauts across Mars.ā
