Been thinking about Prey 2017 recently.

Heavy Spoilers Below

It's a cosmic horror story, sure. The Typhon are psychic predators that feed on consciousness, and it's implied that they're just part of an even bigger psychic food chain. Humanity is diving headfirst into technologies that they barely understand with the potential to completely upend our understanding of psychology, physics, and reality as a whole.

But the horror isn't drawn from that.

The real horror comes from the fact that you - not Morgan Yu, but you the Player - are being lied to.

You're told you're going in for a routine physical and mental wellness check before you get sent into space. That's a lie. You're actually being used as a lab rat for experimental brain-modifying technology, and you've been in a loop of having your mind wiped for three years.

You're told you're on Talos I, a space station dedicated to researching the Typhon. That's a lie. You're actually in the middle of a simulation based on the memories of a dead person.

You're told you're Morgan Yu. That's a lie. You're a Typhon/human hybrid being used as a lab rat by Alex Yu in the "real" world. Everything you've been doing is one giant psych eval to see if your species can develop empathy, and he has no problem killing you if you fail.

Prey isn't scary because you're facing eldritch abominations on a space station full of mad science. It's scary because everyone, even the game itself, is lying to you from start to finish.
