Hi! I'm Tamas, Illustrator and 3D artist. I'm facing something new, interesting and inspirational all the time, this is the journal for them. You can find more about me at www.tamaserdodi.com
Stop Windows 10 from Automatic Deleting Thumbnail Cache: When you open a folder containing media files like jpeg image file then you are able to see a small preview of that file in the Windows Explorer.
Okay this one could seem pretty boring but I realized I’m waiting too much time for my thumbnails to reload, this method seems to speed this annoying thing

This is the beginning of the series, watched this in chunks but tried to make notes about the most interesting points, watch the whole video for more :)
Key 3 points:
- Have a thinking sketchbook for yourself and a pro for showing to others
- Think loosely, always push forward, make some exploration sketches and new ideas will come
- You can make anything, but it takes time, especially when you are learning
In detail:
Try to avoid only visual portfolio, push your stuff to reflect design thinking
Get references and make a proper moodboard before you start
(even photobash quickly some things - but this is just for feeling!)
Combine your grounded realistic references with a visual hook to create something new
Get references for
A ideas
B Landscape - forms and shapes
C Buildings - details, construction, possible specials like “bridges, hallways, towers”
D Interior details - everything depends on what and why you like to show
Mindmap basically your ideas - What Why and How
Paper is free in Photoshop so don’t be shy
Move forward - avoid the blank page effect, draw do not stop your thinking, draw what you can figure out - draw a basic MAP as a starting point
Play with section or side view to see the elevation
Draw plans with minimal perspective
With just shapes
Minimize the dimensions what you have to think about in the same time
SLOW DOWN when you are learning, a Pro can flash it out without you seeing (think like a pro baseball player, it seems so simple but really they have a ton of time practicing)
You can play with this realisticly for a whole day
Its too early to jump into 3D at this point
This is not accurate, just to imagine
1 - 2 - 3 rule
Put something in the Foreground - have your selling point / focal point - Put something in the background
Personal sketches to figure out vs professional presentable sketches
You should have separate sketchbook what is messy and with things only you can understand.
You should not think about details at the thinking stage
Loosely draw perspective “indications” you can always change these or just start a new one - push these into smaller time chunks around 10-15 minutes so you are not wasting time on a wrong direction - Or you can always change it, find a way to make it still interesting
When lineart is there make it multiply mode and put some values under it
You can even indicate a blue sky in the background just to see how claustrophobic it seems
For interiors you should think about the story - is it a marketplace or a blacksmith? - always use your brain - what seems reasonable

Quick video after lunch, with good takeaways:
Set constraints before you start
Do your research - create moodboard
Once you finally start drawing make sure to draw fast and loose
2 tone approach - for quick ideation
When you have too many options go from broad to narrow and filter out what is not the best solution to the problem you are trying to solve

Sunday could not pass without spending some time wasted, but this time instead of watching a movie I searched towards workspace organization :)
Helpful tips (quoted from Matthew’s post):
1. Get rid of the things you don’t need or aren’t using anymore (someone might find helpful)
“Does this object bring me joy?”
“Do I use this often?”
“Have I used this in the last year?”
“Is this important to keep?”
2. Organize everything based on how often you use it.
Manage those wires / Get comfy / Make it as inspiring as possible
You might wonder why this is soo important, but I’m using a lifehacker tip for filemanagement, and thats simply put an underscore “_” after my final jpeg files so its way easier to find the finals in the file manager than if I just save as with the same filename.
I spent too much time during the years to save a copy of my PSDs, rename the file (add the underscore after the filename) and choosing jpeg (most of the time I clicked to other extensions accidantely..) so finally after some search figured out a way to make my life easier :)
I searched for Save as Script, found this great post which is 99% of what I wanted.
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/594393
The only thing I had to change was replace the “-copy” to “_” so it save how I need.
The second part was to make it even faster is to remap my keyboard shortcuts, for that I had to change “save” to
CTRL+S (which was previously Save As)
and added CTRL+Shift+S for this script (in the Edit / keyboard shortcuts menu)
Lastly I’m happy to finally look at a code, trying to see between the lines and finally change something, even if it was not a huge thing I saved some extra clicks from the future :)

Try to make something every day to push your comfort zone, if you struggle it could be a good helper if you use restrictions - draw only with red pencil or sketch the same mug every day for 100 days varying the technique.
And here are some thoughts from the site:
“” “The voice in your head that tells you that you shouldn’t be working on the ideas that you come up with.
The value in recognizing the monkey’s voice so that you can differentiate what it tells you is foolish from what actually is foolish.
-The importance of sitting down and doing the work without judging it, because it might turn into an important idea, but if you kill the idea before you even try, you will never know.
-How the monkey will tell you that you aren’t relaxing enough, but then when you are relaxing it will tell you that you aren’t doing enough work.
-The idea of perfectionism and how sometimes it is just a way for us to delay putting our art out into the world.
“Our job as creative people is to make something new.”
“But the reality is that all kinds of bad things are going to happen to you if you spend all of your time sitting on the couch watching the ball game drinking a beer.”
“You have to be able to suspend judgment in order to make creative work. There’s a time for judgment but there’s also a time for productivity.”
“You have to decide that your life and the work that you are doing matters more than this engagement with this stupid voice in your head.”
“No matter what it is you make, somebody is benefiting from what you are making. Your job is to focus on that.”
“Nobody is going to notice the glaring imperfections in your work the way you are.”
“Try something. Just try it. Even it doesn’t work perfectly, it is better than holding it back endlessly. - go to a clown school just to try it.
“Don’t worry about what people are going to think. Start making stuff and start putting it out there and sharing it with other people.”

“Make room/empty space in your calendar and life for new things, you will finally have time and energy for the things you always wanted to try.”

This was a super episode :)
“Student usually forgets the time is not important when you are learning”
“Design from inside out - start with a function not the exterior form”
“Apple is working from the outside and try to fit in whats possible, not bad, but harder to understand and can be soulles”
“If you look at a Scifi tower in the middle of nowhere vs. a medieval castle where you clearly see its built to serve and save the queen and the king”
“Towers usually have only 1 purpose, make your design clear!”
Keep your design grounded and not too alien, if viewer sees familiar things its easier to understand what is the subject. Show already existing things in an interesting, new way could be enough if not better than reinventing a whole world. (what could be impossible especially in the beginning and straight route to failing)
Most of the current entertainment projects use some era/style as a base to save time.
You have restrictions what you have to count with

Download youtube video as mp3 - how to avoid timewasting tip1
Recently I had some internet connection issue because I’m using a wifi adapter on my PC instead of cable and wanted to find a virus free ( ! ) solution for downloading music from Youtube and (currently) this is working without Antivirus alert :)
The other issue is when I’m on Youtube I’m wasting so much time searching and the algorithms are working perfectly so I can’t just play it in the background - when I see something just for a second it instantly grabs my attention...
My goal is to live my life as productive as possible, during the last months it didn’t go as I planned, I spent more time watching videos than actually doing my daily sketches.
So my first goal(s) are:
I can watch tutorials or social media only after I’m done with mimimum 1 hour sketching / drawing / painting
If I watch something I have to summarize the essence of it, if it had no message I wasted time.
I feel I find something interesting, inspirational or useful every day, but after some time I totally forget what was it. I have this weird idea that it could be fun to make a journal about my findings. Over time it could become a nice archive so why not I make it public.
Check back later!
Have a nice day,
Tamas
