Final

For my final project, I made an acrylic on canvas piece (8 in x 10 in) l. I was inspired by some techniques I have seen on TikTok and Pinterest and was excited to finally try it out! My piece would relate to the Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, and Minimalism Art movements.

My piece relates to abstract expressionism, as it does not have a specific focus and is not particularly detailed. The composition instead focuses on bright colors, shape, and flow across the canvas instead of having a central point or focus. The art has emphasis on movement and unique elements.

Similarly to the last movement, the piece exemplifies pop art mostly due to its eccentric colors and the repetition of its flowy lines. I would say this piece blurs the “boundaries of high and low art”, because it was “accessible” and easy to create but still looks “limitless” and aesthetic.

Lastly, my artwork could be defined as minimalistic, as it is very simple and once again does not have a central focus. The shapes are organic and not complex. I was able to let up on having exact control over how the piece would look by effortlessly blending colors and simply enjoying how they turned out.

ARTH 102 Final

I started my background with the “Cubism” unit. I loved drawing a bunch of shapes and trying to make them piece together, so I figured this would be the best way to start my final! I outlined the shapes to make them more blocky.

Next, i used “Formal Elements” to create a gradient from left to right inside of the shapes. I used warm colors on the left, and moved to cooler colors on the right. Keeping the color inside the shape helped me give some contrast against the white background.

Finally, i used “Your Art Voice” to add a sort of “message”. This piece is supposed to be a keepsake, so I wanted to make it something I would hang on to and maybe put it on a desk or a wall in the future. This led me to choose the words “Decorating with a moment of joy” because as much as I thought I would dread this class (I don’t claim to be creative or artistic in anyway), I enjoyed the change of pace in my assignments this class gave me.

Final

For my final piece I incorporated Fauvism, Surrealism, and Impressionism.

I used Fauvism by using vibrant colors throughout the piece. I used reds, oranges, and yellows on the lady, while using calmer tones on such as purple, blue, and greens in the background. I use wavy strokes in her hair to show her happy energy in contrast to the calmness of the background.

Surrealism was used by me making normal objects with different ones. I made a shirt into a snake and a banana as a phone. Eyeballs for the clock and flowers. I want to show how casual the character is while interacting with this odd environment.

I used Impressionism by trying to put the image in a certain point of view. I wanted to make it feel like that the viewer's point of view is as if they're interrupting the lady during a phone call. To immerse the viewer into the image.

This class was so much fun, I love learning about the different styles and movements.

i decided to take multiple interpretations/perspectives on the final.

i decided to incorporate keith harings nyc theme by taking one of his “female figures” and using that as my basis. in his original art the woman has a female sign where her vagina would be but i thought that was going to take away from my art. but i chose this one instead of his other pregnant woman ones because it looks rebellious

for the feminism aspect i decided to put on my figures what it means for feminism now for me. i think there’s a part of being a woman i enjoy where everything is all flowers, roses, and beauty. which i love. i love feeling soft and in touch with my nature feminine side. but then there’s also that mirror side where i wish i didn’t get to be apart of but it’s the danger to feminism. i decided to put caution where women are typically sexualized with or from, yes even feet. so the breasts, mouth, and private area are all covered with caution. i decided to do that because women are beautiful, hence the flowers in the exact same place in the other image, but we are also valuable and fragile and people tend to try to take advantage of our bodies or voice. so please proceed with caution.

i then wanted to kind of also add pop art but i decided to mirror half the figures to one another. i know that’s not typically done but i decided to do that because for my feminism portion of the piece. i think mirroring them instead is a different interpretation of what pop art is. o especially decided to do it that way to show the contrast but also to show how repetitive woman are viewed that way.

This caught my attention! The theme is really cool. You did a great job explaining the feminism theme, which is understood by many. I love how you explained the dangers to being feminine.

Final 322: NYC 1980’s, Earth Art, Feminism

The entire canvas is supposed to oppose itself, the wording being “Now soft goth” versus the bright, floral, and happy theme. When flipping through my magazines, one magazine was encouraging men and women to be goth, but not too goth. The other magazine was encouraging “feminine” characteristics. I thought it was humorous that the magazines were saying two totally different things are the “new trend”. This is why I chose the words “Now soft goth” because I thought it was humorous, considering the different “new trends”. 

The flowers represent earth art, I cut flowers from a bouquet that was given to me to create a mini-garden. I added pearly light paint as a background, I think that helped all the colors stand out. The flowers also oppose the idea of being goth, and embrace what is apparently not the trend in the particular magazine. I also drew flowers with paint markers, and added gold paint to them. 

The dancing people holding hearts also oppose the “Now soft goth” and represent NYC 1980s art. I added paint with texture for the hearts and used chalk markers to paint their bodies. To add a little more, I scribbled inside the bodies to make it separate more from the background.

Final 102:

Abstract Impressionism, Cubism, Surrealism

I started my final by choosing abstract impressionism. I was not sure what to do, so I figured a purple background to start would be nice compared to a plain white background. I then added some circular texture to it by spinning my paintbrush. I wanted to get some layering in, so I added starburst shapes and red and blue stripes to contrast each other. 

I then followed with cubism, I started with triangles and added more outlining to them with different colors and materials. I wanted to make the triangles pop. I added the triangles to an already outer space-looking canvas to enrich the theme of mysterious outer space. 

The last step I chose was surrealism, I added a nose and mouth because I wanted the triangles to be incorporated as eyes, but that didn't work so I added paint to make it more dramatic. I added hair and blush to make it look more “human”. 

The face within this art represents that outer space is unfathomable to the human mind. The vast eternity of the “unknown” is hard to comprehend, and I feel the face in this piece represents this idea.

I chose to do this artwork to demonstrate the societal pressures to become the perfect version of ourselves. I made the human-heart figure to demonstrate that society encourages people to be tough, trendy, and sweet at the same time. Finding balance within these realms can be hard. I also included flowers, leaves, and makeup/sparkles to highlight the struggle between natural beauty and trendy beauty. Society expects men and women to look naturally beautiful, yet encourages beauty-enhancing methods.

EarthArt Homework

I used a flower from outside to create the patterned background. The flower worked really well and created a neat stippling effect. I decided to create a nature based collage on top to stick with the flower theme.

WWI DADA MOVEMENT

This is Lola. Lola LOVES sparkles and all things glam. Lola especially loves all things pink, and making flower arrangements is one of her favorite hobbies.

I constructed Lola using half a water bottle for her body, then used an old silk jewelry bag for her dress. I used straws for her arms and legs, flowers on her head, and the bottom of her dress. I figured she needed a little more funk so I gave her a necklace, earrings, and lashes.

After researching art by Keith Haring, this style stood out the most to me. I added a few extra details such as flowers and attempted to make the ground more colorful. I feel like this drawing demonstrates love, peace, and harmony. The two people dancing through flowers and a heart (semi-representing) the sun above them. This assignment was unique and fun!

102 Surrealism

My character's name is Princess Sandy. I named her this because my background reminds me of Spongebob, and her looks reminds me of Princess Peach. Princess Sandy's favorite food are raviolis. Princess Sandy's favorite hobbies are collecting succulents and going to museums.

322 Feminism

I chose to play with the words on the Vaseline lotion ad by saying, "Now up to 90% more SMELL, cat adored"- originally said, "Now up to 90% more moisture". I added "potentially dead" to the bottles and "down the drain scaries" to take a hit at all the horrible ingredients in. most skincare products nowadays. Products are usually shown to be amazing for your skin but with horrible ingredients. For the background, I started doodling, and then didn't like it- so I layered more onto it.

102 Futurism

I chose the phrase "shall we check in with the robots" due to the fact that "robots" such as AI are being used for all aspects of life. This phrase implies that robots have feelings, which is not true. I chose to put the nature photos at the bottom, and the clock and radio above them. I felt like it was the appropriate hierarchy for nature battling a technology takeover.
