Can’t you hear them?
*comfortingly places hands on her arms* Mei mei... there's no one else speaking here but you and I.
They’re in my head, Si.
They won’t go away.
Who is?
SIMON!
River?
What is it? What's wrong?
I left the States...
It’s a better rule to function from then precident.
But precedent tends to be more realistic.
I left the States...
I know the feeling.
My best friend is in Ravenclaw! And it is a bit different, but you get used to it. It’s not horrible. It’s a family. Everyone is usually pretty nice.
Oh, really? Who's your best friend?
I left the States...
Well then.
Law of averages says something has to go your way soon.
The "law of averages" hasn't actually ever been proven to exist.
But I suppose it is nice to hope it does.
i smell a rat
"All right," Amy declared, with a wrinkle of her nose and a shake of her head as she let out a low cough. "I’m all for a good laugh now and then, but whoever had the brilliant idea of switching out stink bug powder for ground newts tail…. We just might have to have words," she grumbled, trying to hold her house scarf up around her nose while she waved away the obnoxious smell that had filled the air. Extra credit for the potions course didn’t quite seem worth it at this exact moment. Even with a proper cleansing spell, the smell was one that didn’t ever seem to evaporate.
Simon had been working on his own potion-- he didn't need the extra credit, but hey, everyone could always use some practice-- when he heard the girl speak. He glanced up from his own work, debating whether to say anything, and then finally decided to walk over, pulling his wand out, and casting a odor-removing spell as he walked over to her. Simon smiled, noticing it had worked. "Wasn't sure that would actually work," he said, glancing over at the stink bug powder, "The odor-removing charm, I mean. I read about it recently, but I'd never actually tried it. Seems like it has, though." He finally glanced at her, fidgeting slightly. "Oh, and um, hi. I'm Simon," he added, extending his hand to shake hers, "Simon Tam."
I left the States...
So have you done something to particularly offend the cosmos to be unsurprising by such a nasty turn of fate, or are you just really, really cynical?
I wouldn't call it cynical, necessarily-- my sister and I just haven't had very good luck with the cosmos in the past.
I left the States...
It’s definitely not. I’m not thrilled about it at all. Not a way to start my last year…
Pleasure to meet you, Simon. So, what House did you end up in? I haven’t seen you around so I assume not Hufflepuff.
Well, I suppose it's still better than being back at home for me.
My sister and I were both sorted into Ravenclaw. It's strange how everyone here gets sorted into houses... You know, different-- not necessarily a bad different, just... different.
I left the States...
Trust me, it’s not a normal thing… I can’t really believe it’s happened.
Welcome to Hogwarts, by the way. I’m John.
I'd certainly hope not.
Thanks. I'm Simon-- Simon Tam.
I left the States...
Just in time for a breakout from the highest security prison in the country I left to, and to be surrounded by dementors... This must be some sort of cosmic joke.
Can't say I'm surprised.

Simon Tam was always brilliant. Gifted, was the word people used—even his parents (before his sister, River, learned to read). All his teachers, both in California, where he was born, and in China, where he spent most of his childhood, always applauded Simon’s intelligence and, in all his learning, nothing made him happier than the letter from Salem, Oregon Institute of Magick, letting him know that he was so much more than “gifted.” Two years after he started there, River joined him, but he never heard teachers go on and on about his sister’s intelligence—no one compared him to his baby sister. In fact, he hardly saw her at all. And then he started getting letters from her that didn’t make much sense: letters about things that never happened, jokes they never told—a code. Terrified of what may be happening to River, he began contacting everyone he could, but no one believed him, not even his parents. The fliers about the exchange program at Hogwarts were a godsend. It was almost too easy, signing both himself and his sister up and, once she was accepted, they had to let her go, but she wasn’t the same. Now, Simon dedicates most of his time and effort into caring for River and trying to figure out what exactly it is they did to her, regardless of whether or not his parents believe him.
