‘Henry Explorers’ [aka: ‘Crypt Killer’]
[PS1 / SAT] [JAPAN] [MAGAZINE] [1996]
“Arcades were filled with the sounds of light gun games during the mid-1990s. Everywhere you looked was another Area 51, Point Blank, Time Crisis, House of the Dead or Virtua Cop.
Konami was no stranger to this, putting out its own new arcade game in 1995 called Crypt Killer, or Henry Explorers for the Japanese audience, which was ported to the PlayStation in 1997. Unlike all the above-mentioned games, this one was largely forgotten, and the home version tanked in review scores: 4/10 from IGN, 33% from Absolute PlayStation, and 3.8 from GameSpot.
Big name developers don’t often get hit with low review scores, and there’s no doubt as to what caused the low scores: it simply wasn’t as good as its competition. Time Crisis came out for the PlayStation in the same year, and when comparing the two, Crypt Killer has inferior level design, visuals, and gameplay mechanics.
“Crypt Killer is disappointing, especially considering it came from the creators of Lethal Enforcers” was a common refrain amoung reviewers.
That should be all that’s needed. No need for any more specific information, right?
The comparison to Lethal Enforcers is what interests me, as it leads to an odd conflict: Crypt Killer plays just like Lethal Enforcers, if not better.” ~@tangobunny, TangoPunk (#01)

Note: TangoBunny’s Patreon-supported zine, TangoPunk, will be having its second issue soon! The first issue contains more of the ‘Crypt Killer’ breakdown that was quoted here and, after reading this and the rest of the issue, Tango definitely has the chops for proper game journalism! You can read it yourself as a PDF, as well as a physically printed zine, when you support TangoPunk on Patreon!

Now on Pillowfort!
Ever since tumblr cracked down on NSFW content, breaking my tumblr page and disabling the search bar, I’ve been e-homeless for a while. I’ve now switched to Pillowfort, so my new hangout is at https://www.pillowfort.social/TangoBunny !
A couple of important notes for people that held off on it like me:
1 - It still costs $5 to join
2 - Back when tumblr died, there was talk about all the tumblr lynch mob people switching to Pillowfort, which is the main reason I never tried it - I wanted to get away from people like that. Turns out that’s either completely untrue or they all got banned, because every single post I’ve seen on there is completely civil, it’s mostly just people posting their art and being nice.
Anyway, for anyone who’s already on Pillowfort or doesn’t mind paying five bucks for social media, I’ll see you there!
Collecting more and more!
Someone wake me up when there’s a free blog service that isn’t focused solely around smalltalk, pornography, advertising, or censorship.
Until then, I’m hibernating from social media nonsense. If you want to find me, I’ll be in a good Twitch stream chat, probably!
Another quick update:
I’ve pretty much stopped checking tumblr now.
Gonna try and get back into posting more regularly over at kawen.space (which uses Pleroma) because even though it’s a bit too much like Twitter for what I’m used to, it’s still better than twitter and tumblr and everything else I’ve seen.
I finally started getting the tumblr banner saying I have adult posts for review-- I think the reason it took this long is because there’s four years worth of image posts. Some correctly flagged, others not.
I still haven’t found a good alternative.
Mastodon/Pleroma is too much like Twitter for what I usually post - Most people there post in single sentences and lazy shitposts so it’s not worth checking, and all the other tumblr alternatives are focused on people who posted nothing but porn.
All this is doing is reminding me of how few people online post things I actually want to see. I like hearing about people as people, not just as accounts that post porn and momentary gossip that’s never worth reading again within minutes.
Aaaaa there’s a Mortal Kombat 11 exhibition event over on Twitch!
