According to the laws of physics, a planet in the shape of a doughnut (toroid) could exist. Physicist Anders Sandberg says that such planets would have very short nights and days, an arid outer equator, twilight polar regions, moons in strange orbits and regions with very different gravity and seasons.

petition to turn the earth into a fucking doughnut
THE STORY POTENTIAL FOR THIS IS AMAZING YOU COULD HAVE TWO ENTIRELY DIFFERENT CIVILIZATIONS SEPARATED BY DESERT ON THE OUTSIDE AND AN PERMANENT NIGHT-WINTER ON THE INSIDE YOU COULD (WITH A LITTLE FUDGING ON TIDES OR SOME STABILIZATION FORCE) HAVE MOONS THAT GO THROUGH THE FUCKING HOLE, WITH LUNAR-POWERED SORCERERS LIVING ON THE INNER EQUATOR IN GIANT ICE CASTLES WAITING FOR THE TIME OF THE MONTH WHEN THE MOON ILLUMINATES THE ETERNAL NIGHTTIME AND THEIR SPELLS HAVE THE MOST POWER
YOU COULD HAVE ENTIRELY DIFFERENT SPECIES THAT EVOLVED ON OPPOSITE SIDES WHO ARE BASICALLY ALIENS ON THE SAME PLANET AND WHOEVER CROSSES THE GIANT DESERT OR ARCTIC CIRCLE (HEH) MAKES FIRST CONTACT
THIS IS SO COOL
THIS IS SO COOL
I WANT TO RUN FIFTY THOUSAND GAMES ON WORLDS LIKE THIS HOLY FUCK
THIS JUST IN IF I’M UNDERSTANDING THE MAGNETIC FIELDS CORRECTLY I THINK THE ETERNAL NIGHT ICE REALM WILL HAVE NEAR-CONSTANT ELECTRICAL STORMS
So Tanith Lee's 'Day by Night', am I right, I feel like I am right, this has essentially been written.
My current Tanith Lee collection, minus my copy of The Silver Metal Lover, which was loaned out, and Dark Castle, White Horse, which is in my bag. Am I missing anything essential?
(Oh, and all of my anthologies that ft. her are on a lower shelf. There are quite a few.)
I’m screaming. I want access to those shelves. {I have 80% of the books there, but…}
Aw! I've been really lucky - two of my best friends love TL and are absolute FIENDS at finding her in thrift and second-hand stores. So a lot of my collection is thanks to them. And Amazon.

Well, it's 19F out, I'm wearing a blanket as a cape, and I've got coffee and a Tanith Lee book that I haven't read. Sounds like an okay afternoon.
"It was not apathy. It was an intelligent disinterest in those things that could have no bearing on one’s existence."

The bitterness of joy lies in the knowledge that is cannot last. Nor should joy last beyond a certain season, for, after that season, even joy would become merely habit.

Writing is writing, and stories are stories. Perhaps the only true genres are fiction and non-fiction. And even there, who can be sure?

The rooms smelled of metal and dust and a sort of incense smell, too, from some of the very ancient books which were kept in special vacuum containers and turned over by air jets rather than machine, to keep them from crumbling into bits.

I’ve been meaning to say… this is out now!
Publishers Weekly: "Gender is flexible and surprising in 12 stories of characters transformed by the trappings of a different sex. …[E]ach one is guaranteed to make the reader question the roles and qualities often assigned to gender and sex. Jones… provides a strong start for Circlet’s new Gressive imprint of works that explore outside the gender binary."
My story is called Treasure and Maidens, and is about a lady dragon in NYC. But more importantly, TANITH LEE’S IN THIS!
Shameless buy link via clicking on the picture. ;) If you fancy!
I do believe I will be finding a copy of this!
