Can you come and get me?

Creating new habits feels strange

Building new familiarity wasn’t something I planned

Little steps

Grabbing one rung on a ladder at a time

But fuck,

I’m still terrified

The anxiety that often consumes me

Keeps me here in the stillness

Would it be too much if I asked you to come and get me?

Like a small child stuck halfway into doing a backflip on a jungle gym

Please help

Can you come and untangle me and put me back down on the ground?

City Lights

The smoke from the recent wildfires blended with the usual pollution

Clung to my hair and filled my lungs

The sky was engulfed in hues of orange and swirls of grey

I hate the hustle of this city

It moves too quickly

It’s unforgiving

I feel insignificant

Putting on an outfit I don’t like

Faking a smile I rehearsed too many times

Catering to rich men to earn enough to barely survive

By the time I get home,

the exhaustion weighs heavy

All I can do is surround myself with my own silence

I talk a lot of shit about this place

It probably doesn’t deserve half the things I say

I know one day when I look back,

This city that once broke me has also made me.

My Unsent Voicemail

I know you’re asleep but can I call you?

Can I hear you breathing for a few minutes?

Just so the voices in my head will leave me alone for a while.

I know you’re over me.

You don’t love me, but can you just pretend that you still do.

Just for tonight.

And I promise that every trace of me will disappear after this call.

What does grief look like?

I talked to a colleague yesterday. He lost his son and father- in-law three years ago.

I remember hearing the news. It’s the kind of tragedy that steals all language.

His son, barely 21, drowned while trying to save a dog that was being swept down a rapid river in Montana. His father-in-law drowned in attempting to save him.

Yesterday was the first time I noticed that he was able to tell me a story with excitement. The way I smiled back at him to let him know how proud I was of him, it was the first time in 3 years where I've seen a spark of healing.

He didn’t know that watching him heal was the first time I realized I hadn’t even begun to heal myself.

I have lost so many loved ones that somewhere along the way I forgot to grieve and kept a graveyard of people I love in my mind.

He called it being stuck in a state of static and I finally realized that’s how I’ve been living. In a smokescreen that I’ve put up for so many years that I didn’t even attempt to heal.

So what does grief look like?

For me, denial.

When you have to lie down for at least an hour to recover because work fucked you so bad that you can’t even move afterwards 🙃

It wasn’t even consensual.

I think one of the hottest things a man can do is genuinely lose his cool over something or someone that upsets you.

Pretty (Kinda Pretty)

I have been unkind to the vessel that carries me.

Thousands of sleepless nights.

Caffeine and liquor injected in my veins.

All the hurtful things that I have convinced myself stemming from my childhood.

“Too fat”

“Kinda pretty”

“Someone’s second choice”

Look at all this doubt that we have created.

Body dysmorphia

Self hatred

The human skin can be such a hard place to live in.

I’m rewriting this construct.

Because it’s given me no purpose.

How about we start with

“you’re more than the skin that you’re living in.”

What Remains

What is left on the burnt forest floor?

A single seed sprouts from the remainder of the decay

Born from the ashes of the wildfires

It’s not pretty

Yet it’s trying

The mother tree surrendered her roots to the fire

It breaks through the coal and black soot

No one believed in her

There she climbs defying all odds

She doesn’t see that she is the only one who survived

And frankly the seed that has grown into a tree to begin the forest again doesn’t care that she was the only one

And like the moon, we must go through phases of emptiness to feel full again.

Vanilla, Citrus and Wreckage

Darling, I didn’t ask for any of this.

I’m just a 5’3 girl that smells like vanilla, citrus and wreckage trying to make it out in the big world.

Somehow carrying her friends as ghosts inside her vessel to keep them living on.

For all the grey clouds that swallowed whole years of me.

I didn’t have a choice.

I’ve been fighting like hell trying to climb my way out.

Could you blame me for being just a little too tired?

Would this not break you too?

You do not need to stand next to me as I rebuild and crawl out of the darkness.

I will never ask as it’s not a burden for someone else to carry.

I will never beg. I will never plead.

And if you stay it’s because you chose me.
