New song alert!
The Birds Have Left
The birds have left. The musicians are stumbling off the bandstand. The trumpet player applies balm to his cracked lips And wanders off to go get high.
It's all pond scum now. Where once my heart was open There is just the implacable thrust of the world, the going on. The menace of the awful phillipics being drawn out of the Mouths of powerful men stepping on the anthill.
And even though I know there's a place for art And people tell me it's more important than ever I just find myself yelling at all the musicians on the bandstand Just trying to make their way through the impending mess and Get paid and maybe shake off the insane burning fever for a few hours, "I don't give a shit about your band right now!"
And then someone starts screaming at me And the sound stings my ears like a siren And they don't stop And they are saying this: "I don't give a shit about one more love poem!"
The Sun Was Out Today Once More
The sun was out today once more So too were the bundled protestors Standing outside the Planned Parenthood Trying to coax pamphlets about Jesus Into the hands of laboring couples
I watch this quiet interplay of faith and politics Everyday on the way to my car. I give the volunteers in their smart orange vests A smile and a nod. They are part of my America. But today I watched the old woman more closely
Handing out the pamphlets— Without words reaching into the abyss Also in need of some humanity She saw me watching and smiled. I saved my soliloquy for another day And waved back.

George Mason stunned the country by advancing through the 2006 NCAA Tournament and reaching the Final Four, setting a precedent for Butler, VCU and other mid-major Cinderellas that followed.
My story on George Mason’s 2006 Final Four run for VICE Sports. A total pleasure to write & report. Got to chat with close to half the team. Nice guys. A Cinderella story for the ages!
Sears Tower
When we took off from Midway, Rising swiftly, turning East, I saw out the window To my left the Sears Tower-- Two-pronged, contrite, Sculpted, back-lit with the Fading sun and then out Of view as we took a shortcut Across Lake Michigan, cool Blue, do ya want to drop a Freshly-minted coin? Me too!
I talked confidently all weekend about The Mid West and its affability, Its nice girls. Outside of a Chicano Restaurant I went on and on about New Yorkers and how, having Lived there for six months at the time, I could comfortably proclaim them all Dicks. I passed someone In the airport--a brisk walker Clutching a McDonald’s bag--who Had your scent. What is that by The way? The grange or The accumulated waft of many Shopping malls mixed with subdivisions?
From the rooftop of my friend’s apartment In the Ukranian Village we had beers, someone Teetered much to close to the building’s Edge and a man from the triangular roof Across the sidelot smoke and stared At us until someone threw him a hello And he smiled. My friend Jack said something More about the Sears, how it looks like the hulking Headquarters from Batman.
Since everyone is going green there’s Been a push to paint the tower silver To reflect more light. Jack is against This. His reasoning and the way I am In tune with the sad geography of this City rings true: It’s my big black gigantic skyscraper. I want It the way it is. I want it blacker than black. -David Tanklefsky
Web Soup
I. Not a place to find the broth curdling or To read a really good Richard Brautigan poem But good for almost everything else. The movie Previews and clips of cats mouthing the words To hit songs from the 1980s. The Internet will Not tell you it loves you.
II. Max, when I called you were at work, Your hands were covered in soap, washing The crust off dishes. You were happy for now Not to be chased by a cult of angry lesbians For a misunderstood remark. What have you Been doing up there in that College town by the racetrack? Remember that Time at Pete's graduation party when the girl With the dreadlocks started rolling up 20-dollar Bills in the bathroom? Max, go home to Massachusetts. Get your head straightened out. At least outlive the legend. You've been up in the Clouds for so long.
III. We traded off weekends in Chicago and This time it was your turn. With your Friends. To a comedy show--Second City-- And around Lake Michigan in a boat. Sunday night came And there were no late-night bulletins about any tragedies So I know you made it back. You didn't call. Your roommate was out this afternoon in a sundress With that new gangly, curly-haired boyfriend of hers. How long have we lived in this snarled city? I remember my first night in the bottom floor of Connie and Uncle Sal's brownstone and Sal is gone now and you love me less, you said so. But hey, things are going good. I turned off the TV. I love the taste of strawberries. -David Tanklefsky
In A Window of the Building
Fear of heights Fear of falling Fear of dissolution from the source
The mechanism which brought Windows into the building, Hung grandiose chandeliers and Marked the instructions for hanging them Inside a box with children’s crayons.
Are all red neckties my father? Living in a faraway television city Or uptown billboard Addressing me as troublemaker?
The sea is non-industrial waste-- Mustached And bruised. I pity the sea.
My neighbor, the rabbi, thinks the sea is a vast scroll That has been unraveled but not yet translated From an ancient language and that my father Is a son Of Moses.
Extermination means death camps. I know no other speak to language this. Musicality is the opposite, Means upjumping and the dance of survival.
Sometimes when I want to feel close to killed off generations I look out at the night sky from my roof for three reasons: It is the propaganda of one thousand different races. It is beyond my nose. It offers nothing in the face of all this illusory meaning.

Notes From an Art Gallery, Syracuse, NY
John Von Wicht wrote a letter To Martin Bush the year he died Wishing good health to the family of Martin Bush.
On the red bridge outside the temple I imagine kneeling, feeling my knees lock Perhaps out of genetics Since my father lost one kneecap Had it removed by a Dr. Patel.
The red dye is cast Long after sheered the sheepskin was All tiny lambs are downcast And this, as you may have rightly suspected Is another red poem.
In the art gallery my poetry class is standing in An arch-nosed middle-aged woman walks by With a group of possibly methadone-addicted High school students Shuffling along with the age-old slouch of youth.
“Does anybody know what Stream of consciousness is?”
“Um...isn’t it, like, when You just draw whatever? Like What you’re thinking? Or something.”

Blue Mondays From Tomorrow Into Eternity
Can we please go back to our simpler life? Where children get rabies shots For lingering in the park too long And snatching by the tail An aggravated squirrel?
Nope.
We must dwell in the wild wood Of hulking granite and busking Side show jazz men who rummage Onto the J train with all of their Earthly belongings
Proclaiming Mars is their home planet And only 15 dollars in pocket change Can get them back.
We have to do this here now. We can’t pick sweet strawberries Or walk three miles down a sun-splotched Lane. We have to fight it out While we’re young.
We have to make a mess of everything. We have to live in New York.
-David Tanklefsky
My Twenties
I loved the three months in London. The four nights in Paris. The eleven hours in Amsterdam. The night we camped out on the beach in Malibu and woke up wondering which house on the cliff was Bob Dylan's.
I loved the time we went to Camden with the South African kids Jack met. The time we took the train to Naples and drank the bad wine. The time at the Joan of Arc show where we met Tim Kinsella and he asked if we had a place for him to crash. The time The time The time The time.
I loved the horrible apartments. The month when Andy and I slept on the floor of my aunt's in mid-town and the doorman always asked for our IDs. The night I had to climb up the fire escape in Greenpoint to escape the landlords' daughters' very muscular Russian ex-boyfriend. The night we got bedbugs at the one on Hooper Street and stayed up until four in the morning caulking every crevass and crack.
I loved so many of the car rides. The one where we drove back to New York after the concert and got back at four in the morning and there was still a party happening at James' apartment. The one where Gio told me about his meditation retreat in Texas. The one where Allen played me the Replacements for the first time and told me his Very Big Secret. The one where we sang all of "We Are the Only Friends That We Have" in its entirety at the top of our lungs.
I loved when Mark gave us free ice cream. When Mark emerged from the woods with his shirt torn looking for his phone. When Mark When Mark When Mark. When Mark.
I loved when we saw that license plate floating away in the East River and made up stories about where the driver was. The Skype call when you said you weren't moving back to Boston and I fell asleep repeating the phrase "There is so much that I just don't understand" ad infinitum. The text message when you said you owed me a piece of yarn.
I loved the way we told stories about what we really REALLY wanted. I want to be a great sportscaster. I want to be a great musician. I want to be a great novelist. Can I be all three? I want. I want. I want. I want.
I loved the time we stayed up all night after the Halloween party all the way up to when Pete's roommates came downstairs extremely angry that we'd kept them up when they had a bike ride at 5 a.m. When the guy talked our ears off about Gogi Berry juice. When the guy asked us if we were in a yacht rock band. When the guy told us about his brother who had played in Steven Tyler's first band.
I loved whenever someone listed off their Dream All-Star Band and it inevitably ended in "Dave Matthews' Violinist" Whenever someone started saying what you really had to do if you wanted to make it as an artist was... Whenever someone said if you really wanted to make money you had to... Whenever someone asked if I was a still a student or if those were really my mother's jeans.
I loved everything about Dodger Stadium: The art deco facade, The canyons beyond centerfield, Vin Scully. I loved that you loved the health-conscious ballpark food And how we decided West Coast baseball suited us And started making a new list of cities we could live in.
