Holiday: Battle of Angamos

October 8th, A national holiday in Peru to mark the heroism of the Peruvian navy in the Battle of Angamos. Military and civil parades, Official ceremonies, and other events are held across Peru to honor Admiral Miguel Grau and his role in the Battle of Angamos. 

Even though Peru basically lost the battle, they still celebrate it as a holiday, because of the bravery and heroism showed by Admiral Miguel Grau.  His ship was overtaken by the Chilian Army and he was killed, but because of the role he played, he is remembered and honored. This is not a typical fun holiday like Christmas or Halloween, but I think it is a cool one where they take time to honor the fallen hero, and do not focus on the fact of their defeat in that battle.

The actor I chose is Miguel Ángel Silvestre. He is from Castelló, Comunitat Valenciana, Spain and is 35 years old. He is in many movies and TV shows such as Sense8, Velvet, Sin tetas no hay paraíso, and Narcos. I know this actor from my favorite show on Netflix, Sense8, he plays a character named Lito from Mexico City, Mexico who is an actor; so he is a famous Spanish speaking actor, who in one of his shows plays a Spanish speaking actor. I love his character in Sense8 and he is an abolute amazing actor. I realized while researching him that he is in another show on Netflix, Narcos, which I may watch now because he is in it. He plays in Spanish speaking roles and Spanish movies and shows as well as English speaking roles and English movies and shows making him a more diverse actor because of his language skills.

The title translated to English is Alone. This song is about ending a relationship with a guy who did not treat the girl right, and she decides to start living for herself and going out and having fun alone because she got tired of this guy not treating her right. The lyrics are really good, about not being tied down to a man, having to do what he says, and not being lied to and treated wrongly. In the chorus she says she’s going to go out alone and live crazy and I love that message she is saying that you do not have to be with someone, who at times puts you down and ignores you, to have fun and live a fun life.

Ingredients: Hot dog with mayonaise, tomatos, onions, avacados, pickles, sauerkraut. 

When researching this topic, it was a bit difficult because there is not a specific website for a country’s popular food. I found an article and it mentioned while traveling around chile, this particular dish was almost on every corner, so I believe it is an acceptable choice for a popular dish. If i was traveling and saw it I would try it and most likely like it, because I love hotdogs with a bunch of toppings. It is somewhat similar to a slaw dog that I love, which is a hotdog with coleslaw on it, but it has more trimmings than a slaw dog. This dish is such a simple dish and easy to make, and I feel that I would make and eat this all the time if I lived there, but also it makes me want to make it now because of how simple it is, a hotdog with a bunch of trimmings.

The Persistence of Memory

Artist: Salvador Dalí: He was born May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Spain. He was a surrealist painter. “The Persistence of Memory” is one of his most known pieces of artwork.

I really love this painting. It can be interpreted in many ways and one way I see it as is that time goes by too fast and “melts away” and we do not have enough of it. Another thing about this painting is it very calming to look at, to just look and think about the possible meanings behind what Dalí was thinking when he painted this. Also, I have always liked this painting and I have a clock just like the one that is golden in the picture that hangs from one of my bookshelves back home.

This is a commercial advertising Taco Bell. This commercial is practically the exact same to a taco bell commercial or other commercials in English. It is similar to English commercials where it makes what is being promoted the center of attention and shows it in almost every shot of the commercial. The only difference I can think of is that most commercials for Taco Bell in English do not have many people in them and this one has more people in it, especially the kid being the main person to talk about what is being sold.

Real suicide vest discovered in house of Barcelona terrorists

A suicide belt has been found in the house used to plan a terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spanish police have said. It is believed the property in the town of Alcanar, a coastal town about 200 kilometres (124 miles) south of Barcelona, was used as a bomb factory by the cell responsible for two vehicle ramming attacks and a carjacking last week. Combined, the violence left 15 people dead and 120 injured.

This article explains how there was a planned terrorist attack in Barcelona, which is located in Spain. A house blew up that was a base used to make explosives to be used in the attack. Things like this just make me sad for the world and the people that live in it. I am happy that no one was harmed in this explosion except for some of the people behind it and I am thankful that there are people behind this being arrested and taking into custody to figure out more behind this so no more attacks or plans of attacks can occur.

Pasaron cuatro jinetes sobre jacas andaluzas, con trajes de azul y verde, con largas capas oscuras. 'Vente a Córdoba, muchacha.' La niña no los escucha. Pasaron tres torerillos delgaditos de cintura, con trajes color naranja y espadas de plata antigua. 'Vente a Córdoba, muchacha.' La niña no los escucha. Cuando la tarde se puso morada, con lux difusa, pasó un joven que llevaba rosas y mirtos de luna. 'Vente a Granada, muchacha.' Y la niña no lo escucha.         After reading this poem over a few times, I feel that this is a very simple poem about a girl who is beautiful and pretty and all the men want her but there is a deeper meaning to her beauty and what she is doing while ignoring the men. The symbols of the color green, meaning nature and life, and the symbol of the olive branch, which is peace and harmony, really shows how beautiful and simple this girl is with these men that are much opposite her trying to get her to go with them. I enjoy what this poem shows how the women does not listen to the man and continues to do her own thing. Another thing that interests me about this poem is all the symbolism and the descriptive diction that really makes me think about this poem and what the author is trying to convey to the readers.

Song: Andas En Mi Cabeza

Artist: Chino y Nacho featuring Daddy Yankee

I searched the top charts of Latino songs on Itunes and listened to a few songs and this one caught my attention. This song is a very sweet love song. The lyrics are really adorable and the music video to this song shows how much in love he is. “Andas En Mi Cabeza” is translated in English to “You’re in my Head” and the lyrics talk about how he can not stop thinking about this girl and get her out of his head because of how in love he is with her. Along with being a cute love song it is also a song that can be easily danced too whether it be in the car or even at a wedding. I am not a huge fan of marriage but the music video for the song is all about couples getting engaged and I may not want to get married but seeing other people happy in love and listening to this song puts me in a good mood.
